Clowns OK, but... WASHINGTON (AP) - Clowns are OK in some ways for teaching about Christ, but are not to be used in the church’s regular liturgy of worship, says a Roman Catholic committee. The Bishops’ committee on liturgy says the “sincerity of those involved in ‘clown ministry’ is not to be questioned, but it must be made clear that they have no liturgical function.”

SAVED BY GRACE Every accountable person has committed sin and stands alienated from God .because of his sin (Rom. 3:23). The wages of sin is death-eternal separation from God (Rom. 6:23). However, man does not have to be eternally lost because God acted to save us. From His love, mercy, kindness, and grace, God sent His Son Jesus as an atonement for sin, enabling us to be saved from sin and to live eternally with Him in heaven. The grace of God has appeared to all men (Tit. 2:11). Salvation is offered to every man on the same conditions and terms. While it is true that God wants every man to be saved (2 Pet. 3:9), not every man will be saved. Salvation is conditional. Man must act to receive the forgiveness of his sins through the grace of God. What are the conditions for salvation by grace? Let us list them: 1. Faith. "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Heb. 11:6). One must believe in God, in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, and in the gospel communicated to us through Christ (Mk. 16:15). The unbeliever cannot be saved (Jn. 8:24). 2. Repentence. "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:38; cf. Lk. 13:3; 2 Pet. 3:9). In order to be saved, a person must determine in his heart to cease the practice of sin and to live faithfully to God. This repentence will lead to a change in life. 3. Confession. A person must confess his faith in Jesus (not his sins). "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Rom. 10:10). 4. Baptism. Water baptism is also a condition for salvation; it is the act in which Jesus washes away our sins. "And now why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord" (Acts 22:16). This is what man must do to receive God’s salvation-the gift of His grace. Salvation was planned by God. Jesus died on the cross to make it posssible. However, you and I must act to receive it. Here are the conditions which man must meet to be saved by grace. Reactions to AIDS

Churches rebuke notion disease is God’s judgment

By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer The keen and often revealing mixture of human reaction to the spread of AIDS sometimes bears strong religious implications. Along with the general fears, the malady has unleashed varied emotions and attitudes ranging from solely clinical to harshly condemnatory. Numerous church thinkers repudiate both responses as flawed, aiming the sharpest rebukes at smug views of the disease as God’s judgment on homosexual activity. Homosexul men are the disease’s most frequent victims. Some people, including Christians, often have “reacted with condemnation rather than compassion,” writes the Rev. Russell T. Hitt in the evangelical monthly, Eternity. He says such attitudes have made AID victims the “new lepers,” outcasts like those to whom Jesus so often ministered, enjoining Christians to do likewise. Some major denominations, notably the Episcopal Church and several Roman Catholic dioceses in New York, San Francisco and elsewhere, have launched special ministries in behalf of AIDS sufferers. “This is not a matter for pointing a

retribution for homosexual activity continues to crop up, and evangelical publications have dealt with it most openly and seriously. One of the ablest examinations of it came from theologian Cornelius Plantinga Jr. of Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Mich., who criticizes both the ignoring of

the problem’s moral dimensions and looking down on its victims. “If there is a divine judgment on unrighteousness, we may take God’s word for it that there is also, perhaps more severe judgment on self-righteousness, he writes in Christianity Today. “For those of us not tormented by the appetite for promiscuous sex, a more sinister temptation gleams the desire to toss and gore public offenders until the last rag of their humanity has been shredded. “Theneedto be... comforted by the sins of others puts us at final risk with God as surely as if we traveled the fast track on the streets of San Francisco. In fact, our risk is likely to be greater... “It is a grave mistake to underestimate sin and strive for no-fault moralities... But it is an even greater mistake to underestimate ... the reach of divine compassion. Sin is not acceptable to God; repentant sinners are.” Plantinga also faults the secularist response to AIDS, the “pop humanist” media reactions that shun moral aspects of the problem, considering the notion of sin irrational, stressing only that science must be mobilized against the menace. “Once more, technology must be trusted to clean up after the party,” he says of that view.
