People in the news Bad ads rapped for Retton, Cosby Mary Lou Retton’s energized smile may be losing its power with overexposure. At least that’s the feeling at Adweek magazine, which cited the Olympic gymnast and TV’s Bill Cosby in its annual “Badvertising” report for 1985. THE TOOTHY RETTON IS putting the bite on the public in too many ads, the magazine says. Cosby, meanwhile, gets a thumbs down for the way he stammered through one of the first TV spots for Coke’s new Pepsi-like formula. The editors wondered whether Cosby was choking on previous putdowns of Pepsi. Meanwhile, there is also good news for Cosby, whose Thursday night comedy series has been No. 1 in the Nielsen ratings for most of the past two seasons. A survey of 51 contestants in the Miss Teen USA Pageant revealed that Cosby is their No. 1 hunk. THE COMIC BEAT OUT such glory boys as Don Johnson of “Miami Vice,” Ted Danson of “Cheers” and John Ritter of “Three’s Company.” • “Rocky IV,” which is completing its final week at Ashley Square Twin Cinema in Greencastle, has amassed slOl million in its knockout six-week run to lead all movies in current release. THE SYLVESTER STALLONE sequel pulled in $7.1 million last week alone at 2,254 screens, more than double the number of theaters for any other film. It is expected to become the most profitable of all the “Rocky” films. Runner-up last week at the box office was “Out of Africa” with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which grossed $6.3 million in 928 theaters. In three weeks, the love story has totaled $26.6 million. “Jewel of the Nile,” the Michael Douglas sequel to “Romancing the Stone,” was third at $5.8 million for the' week and $39.7 million overall. “Spies Like Us,” set to open in Greencastle Friday, earned $4.9 million to rank fourth. Taking advantage of school Christmas vacation, the Disney re-release of “101 Dalmations” earned $4 million for the No. 5 spot. THE REST OF THE TOP 10 were: “White Nights,” sixth, “The Color Purple,’’seventh; “Head Office,’’eighth; “Young Sherlock Holmes,” ninth and “A Chorus Line,” 10th. LOS ANGELES (AP) The wife of singer Jackie Jackson, older brother of pop superstar Michael Jackson, has filed for divorce, charging that her husband struck her once and threatened her with violence on other occasions. Enid Jackson won a court order Wednesday barring Jackson, 34, whose legal name is Sigmund, from their home. She said he hit her Nov. 25, bruising her. Mrs. Jackson, 31, claimed her husband earned $3 million from the summer 1984 Victory Tour by the six Jackson brothers and can afford to live elsewhere. The petition filed Monday in Superior Court said Mrs. Jackson also seeks sole custody of their two children, Sigmund Jr., 8, and Brandy, 3. Attorney Franklin Garfield, Jackson’s lawyer last year, said he no longer represented the singer.

MARY DECKER SLANEY World's fastest mom

Mary Decker Slaney, expecting her first child in early June, plans to continue training “up to the end,” all the better, she believes, to have her running again in middledistance competition as early as August. In contrast to such other world-class stars as Valerie Brisco-Hooks and Evelyn Ashford, sprinters who both eschewed serious training during their recent pregnancies, Slaney continues to put in her usual 40 to 50 miles a week, with her doctor’s go-ahead. She’s even keeping a log about it. “I’d like to have a book done,” she says, adding that “there isn’t any information” for world-class women in her condition. Now in her fourth month, the 27-year-old Slaney is nearly as sleek as ever, though she allows that a 6:30 mile feels about as difficult as a 5:50 did before. “The doctor says it’s O.K. to do what I’m used to,” she explains with a smile, “but that I’ll get slower and slower and slower as I get bigger and bigger and bigger.” • NEW YORK Frederick S. Pierce, chairman of the American Broadcasting Cos., is expected to resign as early as Thursday, according to sources close to ABC. The resignation would came just six days after the merger between Capital Cities Communications and ABC had become final. Before the merger, Pierce had been president of ABC. The sources said Pierce, who had been named vice chairman of Capital Cities-ABC, might remain as a consultant and perhaps even retain his seat on the Capital Cities-ABC board. There has been speculation that Pierce, having played a major role at ABC since 1974 and served as president since 1983, would not be happy as the third man in the new management structure headed by Thomas S. Murphy, chairman of CaDital Cities, and Daniel B. Burke, the president. • NORTHAMPTON, England (AP) Judy Came, the “sock it to me” girl on the ’6os “Laugh-In” comedy show, has been released on SIO,OOO bail after choosing to be tried by a jury on drug charges. Miss Came, 46, former wife of film star Burt Reynolds, was arrested Oct. 10 and charged with possessing cocaine, marijuana and amphetamines. After setting bail, magistrates in Northampton, north of London, adjourned her case for six weeks Wednesday and ordered her to stay at her home nearby.
