People in the news Wyman to mend for 3-5 weeks SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) “Falcon Crest” matriarch Jane Wyman, recovering from abdominal surgery, is expected back on the set of the CBS television series in three to five weeks, a publicist said. “She’s doing well and she’s going to be discharged in a dew days,” Joni Martin, nursing supervisor at St. John’s Hospital, said Sunday. Hospitalized on New Year’s Day with flu-like symptoms, the Oscar-winning actress and former wife of President Reagan has been in good condition since Thursday’s surgery to remove an abdominal obstruction, Miss Martin said. Miss Wyman, who marked her 72nd birthday Saturday in the hospital, will recuperate at her Santa Monica home for three to five weeks before returning to work, said Bob Crutchfield of Lorimar Productions. • In a year when most of the Christmas movies have been exceptionally disappointing, why is Woody Allen’s new film still waiting in the wings? Allen’s “Hannah and Her Sisters” is ready, and it was ready early enough for a Thanksgiving or Christmas opening to be contemplated. But it will not open in New York until Feb. 7. “I wish we could say this were intelligently planned, but it’s more a matter of the calendar,” said Robert Greenhut, who has been producing Allen’s films since “Annie Hall.” Allen has a way of starting his films in the winter he is currently shooting yet another one and having them ready for release a year later. That can be a disadvantage where year-end awards are concerned, since it is generally considered more advantageous to open a film at the year’s end, when it is fresh in the minds of critics and Academy voters. In fact, Greenhut said, Orion Pictures considers “Hannah and Her Sisters” exceptionally strong, and there were thoughts of speeding up its release, even though that might make it competitive with Allen’s “Purple Rose of Cairo.” “We’d love to get out of this winter situation,” said Greenhut. “But in terms of our priorities, it really seemed better to release it properly than to release it in a hurry.” # What’s an epic romance without a theme song? Not much, evidently, since “Out of Africa,” which had no love theme, is hastily being given one. The film itself will not be amended, but lyrics to accompany a section of John Barry’s instrumental score have been written by Marilyn and Alan Bergman. In the tradition of “Lara’s Theme” from “Dr. Zhivago,” and other such musical spinoffs, the song will be recorded as a duet by Melissa Manchester and A 1 Jarreau and is scheduled for fast release. • There was the dirty dozen and the baker’s dozen, and now, Rudy Vallee’s dozen. The veteran entertainer has selected the 12 most beautiful women in Hollywood, continuing a tradition he started in 1934 when the likes of Barbara Stanwyck, Gloria Swanson and Marlene Dietrich were on his mind. Vallee’s 1985 choices are Raquel Welch, Cybill Shepherd, Meryl Streep, Connie Sellecca, Kathleen Turner, Bo Derek, Bridgette Nielsen, Diahann Carroll, Lena Horne, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Linda Evans and Joan Collins.

LILY TOMLIN A smash on Broadway
Bill Cosby and Bruce Springsteen are still capitalizing on a great 1985. Cosby and “The Boss” are among four recipients of the second annual “Entertainment Tonight” Person of the Year Awards. Also tabbed were comedian Lily Tomlin for her onewoman Broadway show “The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe,” and Ron Howard for his directing abilities in the film “Cocoon.” Cosby, of course, was cited for his No. 1-rated television show, while Springsteen won for the second year in a row as a pop music star. “Necomer of the Year” honors went to Whoopi Goldberg of the film “The Color Purple,” along with actor Bruce Willis of TV’s “Moonlighting,” TV and movie actor Michael J. Fox and singer Whitney Houston. LOS ANGELES (AP) Before he created “Star Trek,” Gene Roddenberry battled muggers, thugs and thieves instead of Klingons. Roddenberry, who produced the 1960 s science fiction television series, is a former Los Angeles police officer. He is one of many, including best-selling novelist Joseph Wambaugh, who have traded the badge for the typewriter. “I get quite a few calls from officers,” said former Commander Joe Gunn, now a successful screenwriter. “Everyone thinks it’s easy to write. They say, ‘I can do that. I have as many stories as anyone else.’” Deputy Chief Jesse Brewer is adviser for the television series “Hill Street Blues,” and trained the cast how to use handcuffs and hold a gun. And Miami officials consulted the department before “Miami Vice” went on the air. But Gunn said, “If you were to make a show technically accurate, it would be one of the most boring shows on TV.” KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) Guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, invited to this country by Nepalese disciples, says he wasn’t hounded out of the United States, “I was hounding America.” He said Sunday he planned to settle in a small residence, not a commune, in the Himalayan mountains, either in India or Nepal. “If the (Nepalese) king is happy for me to have a hut in Nepal, I’m absolutely willing,” the 54-year-old guru said. “I will love to be in a hut. It will be a palace for me.” Rajneesh had told reporters in New Delhi on Friday that he would return to India to inspect sites for a permanent commune there. He already has five Rajneesh meditation centers in Nepal.
