Worry Clinic
By George W. Crane. Ph.D., M.D
Martin has the proper American spirit, for he relishes competition. That’s basic to our “Free Enterprise” economy. It is the greatest deterrent to Russian dictatorship! CASE P-931: Martin L., age 27, works in the Classified department of a newspaper. "Dr. Crane,” he said, “our paper has 40,000 circulation. "And advertising surveys show that there are over 3 readers per copy sold. "If we skip the fraction, that means 3 x 40,000 gives us 120,000 faithful readers everyday! “So my boss asked our managing editor to please run your newspaper QUIZ but place the answers back in one of our classified pages. “For it pulls 25%, which means 30,000 readers will turn back into the Classifieds every day to find their answers and see who wins. “One of our department store heads competes with the girls in his office, for the winner then pays for the coffee or soft drinks at coffee breaks. “And many families compete, with the loser washing the dishes and 2nd low scorer must dry them or carry out the garbage. “So we find the QUIZ promotes a lot of family fun and doesn’t require but 5 minutes, so it attracts all members of the family, even including the children and daddy. “My wife is a crossword

puzzle fan, but that is a ‘solo’ game so it doesn’t produce the family competition as the QUIZ does. “We find that our advertisers doubly enjoy the QUIZ, for it brings those 30,000 surefire readers into the Classified section everyday! “Most of them might not have gone back there on any given day except to find their answers. “Once back there, however, they may see several bargain items they had long wanted to buy but had just put off doing so. “By running the QUIZ answers there, it takes no more space but certainly pleases our advertising department. “Dr. Crane, did you ever go into a grocery store to get just a loaf of bread or bottle of milk, yet come out with maybe $25 worth of other items? “Well, that’s why we in the advertising department, appreciate our editor’s running the QUIZ answers on an advertising page.” Readers, maybe most of you don’t realize it, but those little classified ads bring in about 50% (half) of the total cash income to a newspaper! So the editorial writers would have their pay checks bounce if it weren’t for the classified ads! (Always writ* to Dr. Crans. Also Jackie Sleuter and Jim Scott. Josie is home and doing great. She returns to Riley Jan. 1 4 for open heart surgery Jan. 16. Thanks so much, Mr. & Mrs. Ron Gibson and family.
I would like to thank Dr. Thomas Black, nurses and nurses aides in Intensive Care Unit and on 4th floor of the Putnam County Hospital. DePauw University Food Service, the staff and students of Holgate Hall and the men and women of the Moose Lodge for the food and all the cards and telephone calls and kindness shown to me during my recent illness.
