People in the news Lifting a 727 jet is probably easier HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - When Benny McCrary slipped and hurt his leg, it took a squad of emergency medical technicians and volunteer firefighters to right him and get him to the hospital, officials said. McCrary, 39, weighs 727 pounds and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the world’s heaviest twins. He slipped on mud and gravel coming out of his home Thursday and “couldn’t fit in a regular ambulance,” according to a Henderson County Sheriff’s Department spokesman, The Asheville Citizen reported. McCrary was taken to Pardee Memorial Hospital for treatment, and X-rays showed his leg was not fractured. His 743-pound brother, Billy, died in 1979 of injuries from a motorcycle accident. The twins had been professional tag wrestlers, performing under the names Billy and Benny McGuire. • TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) Fire spread so quickly through a DC-3 carrying singer Rick Nelson and six others to their deaths that they apparently weren’t able to put it out, and died of smoke inhalation and burns, officials say. Four of the five fire extinguishers in the cabin of the chartered plane that crashed Tuesday near De Kalb, Texas, were unused, National Transportation Safety Board chairman Jim Burnett said in a news conference Thursday. Burnett said there was no indication of structural failure aboard the 42-year-old plane, and that investigators would use infrared photography today to try to learn if spillage reported by a truck driver was aircraft fuel. Autopsies conducted Thursday by the Dallas County Medical Examiners office indicated that Nelson, 45; his fiancee, Helen Blair, 27; and band members Andy Chapin, 30; Bobby Neal, 38; Patrick Woodward, 35; Rick Intveld, 22, and Clark Russell, 35, died of smoke inhalation and burns, he said. Medical examiners are studying soot on the bodies to determine what was burning in the plane, Burnett said, stressing that information from the crash survivors pilot Brad Rank and co-pilot Kenneth Ferguson will be crucial to learn the cause. • INDIANAPOLIS (AP) AIDS victim Ryan White will travel to Rome next month and discuss on Italian television his efforts to return to classes at Western Middle School, his mother says. Jeanne White said Ryan, 14, and her daughter, Andrea, 12, “are looking forward to it. I got him a suitcase for Christmas for the trip.” She said the three would fly to Rome on Feb. 1 as guests of Italian state television, RAI-Radio-Televisione-Italiana, and would appear Feb. 3 on the television newsmagazine, “Italia Sera.” Lydia Griffin, U.S. correspondent for RAI, said by telephone from New York that the trip is contingent on Ryan feeling up to it. If he is unable to travel, Ryan may appear via a satellite hookup, she said. Griffin said Italian TV is “interested in the problem of AIDS and the panic around it. They want to talk to Ryan about being in the middle of this for a year now.”

HARRISON FORD Preserving nature

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) Actor Harrison Ford and his wife want to protect the other residents of their Snake River property two bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, moose, elk, deer and trumpeter swans so they’ve put 132 acres in a conservation trust. Ford, best known for his roles as the swashbuckling archeologist Indiana Jones, and Melissa Mathison have donated the easement to the Jackson Hole Land Trust. Two creeks are home to cutthroat trout and the property has the largest great blue heron rookery in Wyoming, said trust executive director Jean Hocker. “It’s hard to imagine such a place covered with buildings, but that certainly could have happened some day. The Fords have done a splendid thing by making sure that it never will,” Hocker said this week. # HOUSTON (AP) Country-western singer Johnny Lee, who rose to fame in the movie “Urban Cowboy,” is suing a nightclub owner for sls million over profits made from the film and other endeavors. In the federal lawsuit filed Thursday, Lee is asking to be released from a contract he signed with Sherwood Cryer in 1974 in the parking lot of Gilley’s nightclub. At the time, Lee was a $225-a-week musician in singer Mickey Gilley’s band, the suit says. He gained prominence with “Urban Cowboy,” filmed at Gilley’s and starring John Travolta. According to the suit, the contract awards Gilley’s owner Cryer 50 percent of all net income from Lee’s entertainment services through 1990 and gives Cryer the option of extending the contract through 2001. Lee, whose hits from the movie included “Looking For Love,” also is seeking the right to his songs now held by Points West Co., owned by Cryer. • NEW YORK (AP) Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy will return to Broadway in April in a new play by Brian Clark, author of “Whose Life is It Anyway?” Cronyn, 74, and Miss Tandy, 76, have been co-starring in “Foxfire” at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles, where the actress collapsed onstage last month. She retamed to the show several days later. Thccouple will perform in Clark's **Phe Petition,” about a retired British general who learns that his wife has publicly endorsed an antinuclear petition he strongly opposes. It is scheduled to open April 24, but the theater has not been announced.
