In "He's the Mayor," Kevin Hooks stars as Carl Burke, a recent college graduate who becomes mayor of his hometown. The ABC sitcom debuts on Friday, Jan. 10.
TV second season replacements ready
It’s 1986 and TV’s “second season” begins in earnest this week with the debut of three new series. On Friday, Jan. 10, ABC debuts “He’s the Mayor,” a sitcom starring Kevin Hooks as a college graduate who is elected mayor of his hometown. It replaces “Benson” on Friday nights at 9:30 (ET). That longrunning series starring Robert Guillaume is being shifted to Saturdays, where it will now air at 8:30. Now following “Benson” in the ABC lineup is “The Redd Foxx Show,” starring the gruff star of “Sanford and Son,” the popular mid-’7os series. In his new sitcom, Foxx plays the eccentric owner of a New York City newsstand and coffee shop. It debuts Saturday, Dec. 11. Two other series veterans, Hal Linden and Harry Morgan, also return to primetime this week in NBC’s “Blacke’s Magic,” a father-son mystery-ad-venture series. Linden (“Barney Miller”) plays illusionist Alexander Blacke and Harry Morgan (“Dragnet,” “M*A*S*H”) is his father, Leonard Blacke, a slim-slam artist. The series debuts as a two-hour movie on Sunday, Jan. 5., before moving into its regular Wednesday time slot at 9 p.m. (ET). It replaces “Hell Town,” Robert Blake’s
Nielsens'top ten ratings
HERE ARE THE prime-time television ratings as compiled by the A.C. Nielsen Co. for the week of Dec. 23-29. The listings include the week’s ranking, with season-to-date ranking in parentheses, rating for this week, and total homes. 1. (1) “The Cosby Show,” NBC, 31.8,27.3 million homes. 2. (2) “Family Ties,” NBC, 28.6,24.6 million homes. 3. (4) 60 Minutes,” CBS, 25.5, 21.9 million homes. i. (3) “Murder, She Wrote,”
failed series. The show was created by Richard Levinson and William Link, the veteran team who crafted “M?nnix,” “Columbo” and “Murder, She Wrote,” the current hit CBS series starring Angela Lansbury as a mystery writer turned sleuth. Incidentally, ABC’s new Saturday night comedy block replaces “The Fall Guy,” which is rapidly becoming the most traveled show of this TV season. The once-popular Lee Majors series began airing in September on Thursdays against “Magnum, P. 1.” and “The Cosby Show.” For a struggling show for any show that’s one of the most depressing time slots on the TV schedule. Not surprisingly, ABC placed the show “on hiatus” in early November, to be replaced by the abysmal “Shadow Chasers” (which itself has now been canned). But “The Fall Guy” was brought back last month on Saturday nights. Now, it’s being moved again to another of TV’s suicide spots Fridays at 10, where its competition is only CBS’s “Falcon Crest” and NBC’s “Miami Vice.” And what goes into the death valley once occupied by “Shadow Chasers” and “The Fall Guy”? Believe it or not, it’s “Ripley’s Believe It or Not,” which is nearing the end of its four-year-run.
