People in the news Nelson's plane had engine woes DE KALB, Texas (AP) The stories of the badly burned pilot and eo-pilot of Rick Nelson’s plane may be crucial to piecing together how it crashed, killing the entertainer, his fiancee and five members of his band, investigators say. Statements from pilot Brad Rank and co-pilot Kenneth Ferguson is crucial because the only identifiable pieces of the plane remaining are a charred wing section lodged in a tree, a jagged tail section and a broken nose piece. Friends and relatives of the victims say the DC-3 had been plagued by engine trouble in past months, that it had more trouble before its last flight, and that one band member had talked of quitting because he didn’t trust it. Nelson, 45, who became known to millions of Americans as a youngster on “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” was flying from Alabama to Dallas for a New Year’s Eve concert. He and his band had appeared Monday at PJ’s Lounge in Guntersville, Ala., and took off Tuesday afternoon. Lynn Upton, wife of PJ’s co-owner Pat Upton, a former member of Nelson’s band, said Nelson had trouble with the DC-3 on his flight from Orlando, Fla., to Guntersville. “They were having trouble with the left engine. It wouldn’t crank over,” Mrs. Upton said. “Everyone was concerned over this one engine. Pat asked that they stay and fly out of Huntsville (on a commercial flight).” Mrs Upton said the pilots “worked on the engine and felt better about it. Rick felt he had to be there (Dallas).” After a girlfriend told him in 1956 that she preferred Elvis Presley, Ricky decided to make a record himself and came up with a string of hits, amassing nine gold records by 1961, including “Poor Little Fool” and “It’s Late.” Other hits included “Mary Lou” and “Travelin’ Man.” In 1957, he first performed “Teen-ager’s Romance,” and “I’m Walkin,” on the show. The songs became his first millionsellers. In the 19705, having matured and become Rick Nelson, he enjoyed a new lease on his singing career when he formed the Stone Canyon Band. The title track of 1972’s “Garden Party” album, an autobiographical account of his reception at a gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden, was a major hit and produced another gold record. He married Kristin Harmon on April 20,1963, and had four children. Nelson divorced Harmon and was engaged to marry Ms. Blair, of Los Angeles, who was killed in the crash, along with four band members and a sound man. Rick Nelson’s movies included: “Here Come the Nelsons,” 1951; “Story of Three Loves,” 1953; “Rio Bravo,” 1958; “Wackiest Ship in the Army,” 1960; and “Love and Kisses,” 1965. Singer Bobby Vinton, reached in Las Vegas, Nev., said people have forgotten how big Nelson was as an early rock ‘n’ roll singer. “If you look at his hits, he had a tremendous number of big records,” Vinton said. “He was almost as big as Elvis. “He kind of faded out. He kind of retired and then he came back. If he would have stayed with it when he was at his hottest, he’d have been even a bigger legend than he is today.”

RICKY NELSON Grew up on TV
LOS ANGELES (AP)--A new film starring Bette Midler, Nick Nolte and Richard Dreyfuss has a New Year’s party in it, so promoters capitalized on this and toasted the New Year early with sneak-preview parties in 36 cities. “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” is about a bum, played by Nolte, who wreaks havoc on a rich Beverly Hills coupleDreyfuss and Miss Midler. Touchstone Films publicist Hilary Clark said Tuesday’s parties, co-sponsored by many radio stations, were intended to get people talking about the film, which won’t be released until Jan. 31 • HOLLYWOOD (AP)--“Rocky IV,” the latest sequel in Sylvester Stallone’s violent prize-fighting series for MGMUA, was the biggest box-office earner during the last weekend of a generally lackluster 1985 for moviegoers. “Rocky IV” brought in SIO.B million over the weekend to boost its five-week total to $86.5 million. But the film with the biggest overall box-office clout at $229 million was “Beverly Hills Cop,” a holdover from late 1984. AND THE BIGGEST EARNER released this year was “Back to the Future,” a comedy about a teen-age time traveler which rang up $lB6 million at the box office. Other big earners for the year were “Cocoon” with $75 million, “Witness” with $65.5 million, “Goonies” with $61.4 million, “Police Academy II” with $55.3 million, “A View to a Kill,” the James Bond sequel that earned $49.7 million, and “National Lampoon’s European Vacation” with $49.4 million. Last weekend’s No. 2 and 3 earners didn’t trail “Rocky” by much. “Jewel of the Nile,” a 20th Century Fox sequel to “Romancing the Stone,” grossed $8 million, raising its total to $27.6 million for three weeks. The Dan Aykroyd-Chevy Chase comedy, “Spies Like Us,” from Warner Bros., came in third with $7 million for the weekend, boosting its revenues to $33.6 million for four weeks. "OUT OF AFRICA,” the lavish Universal saga starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, was fourth with $6.5 million for the weekend and $14.2 million for the two weeks it has been released, while Walt Disney Productions rerelease of “101 Dalmatians” was fifth with $5.7 million weekend and sll.l million for two weeks.
