People in the news Douglas divides time on 2 films AWvxELLS (AP) He’s a dashing soldier of fortune 1,1 ' lewe * °* the Nile” and a hard-driving stage director in “A Chorus Line.” i he Christmas movie season once again demonstrates the versatility of actor-producer Michael Douglas, who dislikes being categorized. Douglas obviously learned from his father, Kirk, that versatility is the key to a long career. He has been a stage actor, TV series star (“The Streets of San Francisco”), film star (“Summertree,” “Coma”), producer (“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”) and producer-actor (“The China Syndrome”). Romancing the Stone,” which he produced as well as starred in, cost sl2 million and grossed $125 million. It made Douglas a hot ticket in films and resulted in the S2O million sequel, “Jewel of the Nile.” Richard Attenborough’s “A Chorus Line,” in which he worked at a reduced salary and was billed alphabetically, was a different project for him. He was the only name actor in the cast. “But you pays ior what you gets,” he said, smilingly. “I enjoyed doing the movie, but I told them, ‘Don’t come to me for promotion.’ So Douglas was in Los Angeles to talk mostly about “Jewel of the Nile.” “Usually my films take four or five years to get made,” he remarked. “Last year in August, Fox decided they wanted a sequel. 1 found the writers (Lawrence Kormer, Mark Rosenthal), worked up an idea, got a first draft. In September I moved my family to New York and started ‘A Chorus Line’ in October. “Fortunately, I had an office upstairs in the Mark Heliinger Theater where we were shooting, and I was able to prepare ‘Jewel’ there. At the end of January I worked all night to finish ‘Chorus Line,’ then took a morning flight to Morocco. We started filming in April and finished in July for a Christmas release. Right now I’m on automatic.” # CHICAGO (AP) —■ Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal were on a city street, armed and pantless. “There was a little old lady standing next to Hines, and she says ‘Excuse me, can 1 get by? She didn’t even notice that we were in our underwear and had guns,” Crystal recalls. So Hines escorted her across the street as they were playing a couple of undercover cops while making a movie, “Running Scared.” Hines, 39, is fresh from good reviews in “White Nights,” and Crystal, 38, is doing his first movie after moving onnfrom “Saturday Night Live.” # NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Singer Dave Loggins, with hits like “Please Corne to Boston” and “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do,” also is gaining recognition as a country music songwriter. Loggings a finalist in the sixth annual National Songwriter Awards to be presented next month, in the country-rock category for writing “40 Hour Week (for a Living)” and in the traditional upbeat category for writing “Everyday.” The awards, in six categories, will be presented Jan. 13.

JIM HENSON To toast Kermit

NEW YORK (AP) Muppet creator Jim Henson and more than 200 of Kermit’s friends plan to toast America’s best-known frog next month in “The Muppets, a Celebration of 30 Years.” “Big Bird” will be there, the talents of “Miss Piggy” will be showcased and highlights from the Muppets’ TV specials and early days will be shown. Miss Piggy hinted that she and Kermit might be planning an exciting announcement, but gets indignant when pressed about her age. “By no stretch of the imagination am I anywhere near the age of 30,” she said. "I fell in love with a much older frog. I consider the matter closed.” $ It will be Matthew Broderick and a chimpanzee against the Air Force in Fox’s “Project X,” which was written by Walter Parks and Larry Lasker, the authors of “War Games,” the movie that made Broderick a star. # One of the more surprising current remakes of an old movie is “The Fly,” starring Jeff Goldblum and directed by David Cronenberg (“Scanners”). A Mel Brooks production for 20th Century-Fox, "The Fly” will be a new version of the 1958 horror film starring Vincent Price, in which an unfortunate scientist found himself exchanging heads with a housefly. Tn keeping with 27 years worth of advances in horrific special effects, Goldblum will spend the movie metamorphosing into a monstrous, human-sized insect. $ LOS ANGELES (AP) Actor Gary Coleman is to be released from UCLA Medical Center this week, but may not be home in time for Christmas, a hospital spokesman said. The 17-year-old diminutive star of television’s “Diff’rent Strokes” was in good condition Sunday undergoing kidney dialysis and has been outfitted with a portable dialysis unit said hospital spokesman Victor Mitry. Coleman who was born with a defective bladder, has been troubled by kidney problems all his life and has had two kidney transplants. He was admitted to the hospital on Dec. 9. • NEW YORK (AP) Eric Sevareid is to host a one-hour television special called “Time’s Man of the Year” on Sunday, Dec. 29 A syndicated TV network of 104 stations is to broadcast the special, produced by Reeves Communications. It is a first-ever look at how Time’s editors, writers and correspondents select te Man of the Year and produce the stories for the cover package.
