Heloise: Readers receive refresher course in winter driving

DEAR READERS: If you have to drive in snow, freezing rain or ice, play it aafe by following these tips from the National Safety Council: Make sure you check your battery to see if it is charged. Winter starts are tough on batteries. Make sure your brakes hold evenly, the exhaust system has no leaks and the windshield wipers and washer-fluid system are in good working order. Among the items that you should keep in your car for an emergency are: a de-icer, scraper brush, flashlight, shovel, and a bag of rock salt, sand or cat box litter. If you’re driving on slippery roads, slow the car by braking gently. If the brakes start to lock, ease up and then apply again. If you start to skid, don’t touch the brakes. Do ease your foot off the accelerator and immediately steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go. Hold the wheel firmly but don’t make sharp turns. People who have always lived in snow conditions probably know these tips already but those of us who only occasionaly have to deal with snow and ice need a refresher course. Heloise Reelsville firemen have annual party REELSVILLE—The Reelsville-Washin-gton Township Volunteer Fire Department held its annual Christmas party and dinner Saturday evening at the fire station. CORDUROY CLOTHING Dear Heloise: I have a real neat hint for the readers of your column. It is a hint that should be very helpful to the wearers of corduroy clothing, which collects a good deal of lint. My mother suggested I wipe a used fabric softener sheet over the corduroy. It takes the lint off in a matter of seconds. K.F., age 13 AVOIDING BATHTUB RINGS Dear Heloise: A simple way of avoiding those nasty bathtub rings is to fill a large kitchen salt shaker with baking soda and keep it by the tub. Simply shake some baking soda in the bathtub and the ring disappears down the drain. The soda also helps keep the drain sweet smelling and clog-free. Mary Jones BUNDT CAKE Dear Heloise: Here is a hint for getting bundt cakes out of the tube. My husband saw the cake cooling and asked me how did I plan on getting it out. I said, “Very carefully.” He grabbed a heavy paper plate and imprinted the tube on the plate. Then he cut the hole from the piate and put it over the tube in the pan and turned the cake out on the plate. I then put my cake plate on top of the cake and flipped it over and, presto, an unbroken cake. Barry
