Dear Abby: Woman needs counseling to get over lost love

1 )EAR ABBY: Over a year ago, our next-door neighbors (I’ll call them Betty and Roger) terminated a longterm relationship, after which Roger moved to the other side of town to live in his travel trailer. He and my husband are close friends, so Roger drives over to visit us frequently. Betty still cares for Roger, who has been playing with her feelings—trying to get her hack into bed, hut refusing to make a commitment. Betty told him last week to stay out of her life because just seeing him was too painful, but he seems un moved by her pain. Betty has asked us to please not let Roger visit us. My husband thinks this is ridiculous and says she must get over him. Betty is considering selling her house and moving away to avoid the pain of seeing Roger. (She cries at the sight of his car parked in front of our house.) Abby, should we ask Roger to refrain from visiting us? And how can I help Betty get over him? NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR DEAR NEIGHBOR: You can help Betty get over Roger by insisting that she get counseling in order to deal with her lovesick feelings. (“Love” is a mental condition; sometimes it’s a mental disease.) Your husband is right. If Betty

Hints from Heloise: Pecan pralines Christmas holiday recipe

DF.AR HELOISE: Before the holidays last year, you printed your easy recipe for pecan pralines. They were delicious and so easy. I made a batch and took them to the office for the girls to enjoy and also took along your recipe for them to copy but somehow it got lost and nobody knows what happened to it.

can’t handle seeing Roger (or his car), instead of insisting that Roger be kept out of her sight, she will have to get over him. * * * DEAR ABBY: I have two grown daughters and a ti month old baby hoy who is especially dear to me because his father died while waiting for a heart transplant. (He was only 3,3 years old.) It was my second marriage and his first. I was five months pregnant when 1 lost my husband. We had been married a little less than a year. I was 45. I need one of your good answers when strangers ask me if the baby is my grandson. Some even suggest that he was an “accident,” which hurts me deeply as he was a very much wanted child. I suppose when he goes to school he will be asked if I am his grandmother! Please help me. STUMPED IN BALTIMORE DEAR STUMPED: Please accept my condolences for the loss of your husband. It is obvious that you loved him very much. When your son is mistaken for a grandson, simply say, “No, he is my youngest child.” Say it with a smile, and keep in mind that the person is probably just

Won’t you please, please print it again soon? Claire Fellman ★ 1t ★ This is a favorite request at this time of year and I love to share the recipe again and again for those who have lost it and for those who have not tried it. So here goes: You will need a pot that is big enough to prevent any of the candy from overflowing because you have to bring the mixture to a boil. The first step is: Pour into your pot one cup of buttermilk, two cups of sugar and one teaspoon of baking soda. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Cook over medium heat, letting that stuff bubble up until it turns brownish in color and reaches the soft ball stage. Now you'll need to stir it constantly so it won’t stick. Test the candy by dropping a small amount into cool water and by fingering it to see if it forms a soft ball.

trying to be friendly. * * * DEAR ABBY: I’ve been married for 10 years to a man who always had a roving eye. He recently contracted herpes. He claims he got it from a “john” at work. Divorce is out of the question, so I will just have to learn to live with this situation. What do you think about his explanation that he picked up herpes from a john? FAITHFUL FOOL DEAR FAITHFUL: I doubt that he got it from a john. A Jane would be more likely. * * * DEAR ABBY: I have been laugh-

Remove the pan from the heat and add one tablespoon of butter or margarine, one teaspoon vanilla and two cups of pecan halves. Beat the mixture until it becomes glossy and starts to crystalize. On waxed paper or a greased baking sheet, quickly spoon out the candy into little patties about two inches in circumference. Let them cool. If the candy starts to turn sugary and hardens too fast, return to the pot to heat for a few minutes, then spoon it out again. You can pretty up the candy by placing a pecan half on top of each patty while it is warm. The cooking stage is crucial to the outcome of this candy. If you overcook it, you will have a verysugary candy. If undercooked, it will not be firm. A candy thermometer is very inexpensive and will tell you when the candy is at the soft ball stage. It takes all the

ing about the ladies who complained because of workmen showing up with their kids. Well, ha ha ha! They haven’t seen anything yet. My cleaning woman brought her husband to my house every week for over a year. He ate, smoked and watched TV while she worked. I am an old woman with osteoporosis and I use a walker. I had to fix lunch and coffee for him. I finally got fed up and let the woman go and told her why. Who needs a deal like that? Not me. M.N. IN THELMA, KY. * * * (Problems? Write to Abby. guesswork out of candy making. Heloise EMPTY BREAD BAGS Dear Heloise: Save those empty bread bags. Actually it was my husband who started saving empty bread bags for our freezer. Then, when he brought the economy-size, large meat pack bargains home, he divided and popped smaller portions into bread bags. Mrs. Emily L. Allport * * * Be sure to double or triple bag them and seal well. You don’t want freezer bum. Heloise CLEAN DISH DRAINER Dear Heloise: I found an easy way to clean plastic dish drainers. The stains were always so hard to clean before. I used to use a toothbrush to get to the stains in all the grooves. I now soak the drainer in very hot water with a tiny amount of bleach and detergent. By the time the water cools, the stains seem to lift right off and disappear This is so much easier and saves time. While the drainer is soaking I can clean the rest of the kitchen and by the time I’m through the drainer is clean and ready to put back in place. Donna Shaw PRACTICAL GIFTS Dear Heloise: If you have baked' goodies as Christmas gifts, why not hake them ahead of time and freeze them in reusable containers, such as plastic freezer containers. When Christmas arrives, take them from the freezer, decorate the container and give to the lucky person. Sandra M
