Tar Heels first. Boilers third

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) NevadaLas Vegas Coach Jerry Tarkanian says before the season started, he thought North Carolina was the best basketball team in the country. And he says he didn’t see anything at the eighth annual Great Alaska Shootout to make him change his mind. The No. 1-ranked Tar Heels overcame a 10-point first-half deficit to beat Tarkanian’s 16th-ranked Runnin’ Rebels 65-60 Sunday night for the Shootout championship. Brad Daugherty, the 6-foot-ll'/i center who was named the outstanding player of the tournament, scored 21 points including five straight late in the game to keep the Tar Heels undefeated at 5-0. Anthony Jones had 24 points, eight rebounds and three steals for UNLV, now 4-1. North Carolina won the Shootout in 1980. North Carolina State also has won two of the eight Shootout titles.

Williams and defense keys for Syca mores

By The Associated Press John Sherman Williams, the veteran player, gave Ron Greene, Indiana State’s rookie coach, his first victory with the Sycamores. Williams scored 18 of his game-high 30 points in the second half as Indiana State pulled away to an 86-62 victory over St. Mary’s of Michigan in a nonconference college basketball game on Saturday. And Greene’s first impression of the Sycamores was: “We think our quickness is what we’ll have to rely on, because we’re not very physical.” The Sycamores’ quickness broke the game open early in the second half. Leading 35-32 at halftime, the Sycamores held the Eagles scoreless for more then three minutes starting the final period, and “that set the tempo for the rest of the game,” said Greene. St. Mary’s, a college in Orchard Lake with an enrollment of only 300, proved to be a much tougher test than was expected. The Eagles hit 64 percent of their shots in the opening half and more than halfway to the intermission, found themselves in a 2222 deadlock. “Their pressure defense hurt us," said St. Mary’s Coach Tim Domke. “We had a couple of turnovers and they went from three up to 10 up.” Freshman Darrion Applewhite added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Sycamores. Steve Kopicki led St.

Calloway makesgood impression BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Freshman Ricky Calloway, after one game on the college level, seems to know exactly what his role will be for Indiana. Coach Bob Knight says that role will include some starting assignments. The 6-foot-6 Calloway came off the bench Saturday to hit 10 of 11 shots from the field and score 23 points as Indiana University topped Kent State 89-73. “I really don’t consider Calloway’s output as relief points,” Knight said. “He probably would have started this game, but I didn’t like some of the things he did in practice Friday. “For a first-year player and being in his first game, he played pretty well,” Knight said. “He showed an understanding of what we want to do. He made a lot of right plays.” Calloway, a former Cincinnati Withrow High School star who was selected Ohio’s Class AAA player of the year last season, made all six of his shots in the first half. “It was very important to get off to a good start,” Calloway said. “I have some goals for myself and we all have goals for the team. “Defensively my role is to cover the passing lanes, put pressure on the guards. That’s because I have long, quick arms. They want me to make the steals and make things happen “Offensively, the coach wants me to stay in the scheme of things, go to the bucket and crash the boards,” Calloway said. Kent State Coach Jim McDonald said the freshman “surely was a factor, especially in the first half. “We don’t have anyone of his physical statue to cover him. Calloway is a nice player for his size,” McDonald said. “That was the poorest performance,” he said. “It was embarrassing in a game of this magnitude. That was the worst performance by any team I’ve ever coached.” In New York, sixth-ranked Duke won the inaugural Big Apple National Invitation Tournament with a 92-86 decision over No. 5 Kansas Sunday night as David Hendercon scored a career-high 30 points. In the consolation game, No. 18 St. John’s defeated No. 9 Louisville 86-79 with the help of some clutch free-throwing shooting in the second half. The Redmen made 14 of 16 free throws in the final 20 minutes and six in the final 50 seconds to seal the victory. “This was a great opportunity for our players because of the experience they gained,” St. John’s Coach Lou Carnesecca said of the early-season tournament. “They had to play in pressure situations to acquaint them with what’s to come.” In other Sunday action, No. 12 LSU got 31 points from Don Redden in beating Hawaii

Illini only major loss for Big Ten

By The Associated Press The long Thanksgiving weekend brought turkey dinners, followed by a plateful of Big Ten basketball, with more than just stomaens getting upset. One pleasant upset came Saturday when No. 3 Michigan, led by Antoine Joubert’s 21 points, defeated No. 2 Georgia Tech 49-44 in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic at Springfield, Mass. On the whole, the Big Ten made a respectable showing over the weekend by pumping out a 8-3 record against a mixed bag of nonconference opponents, but don’t tell that to Illinois Coach Lou Henson, whose Illini were shaved 59-57 by Oklahoma out in Hawaii. Purdue bowed to North Carolina 73-62, but came back to capture third place in the Great Alaska Shootout by downing Arizona 81-74. Elsewhere, Ohio State hit Maryland 7866, Indiana downed Kent State 89-73, Michigan State socked Western Michigan 73-62, Minnesota defeated South Dakota 6657, Wisconsin trimmed Marquette 75-74, lowa slammed Abilene Christian 92-62 and Northwestern fell to Bradley 76-72. Oklahoma found a name to depend on in senior guard Linwood Davis. Davis played all but two minutes and scored a career high 18 points to help lead 13th-ranked Oklahoma to the upset of No. 7 Illinois for the title of the Thanksgiving Classic basketball invitational tour-

nament. Senior forward Anthony Bowie topped Oklahona’s scoring with 19 points, including the game winner with one second left, but it was Davis who made the difference, “Davis is fantastic,” said Henson. We thought he was capable of such a game. Of course you never want to lose, but the way we shot we didn’t deserve to win.” After Ohio State’s shockingly easy win over No. 17 Maryland, Buckeye Coach Eldon Miller said, “We’re not very good yet.” Guards Scott Skiles and Darryl Johnson scored 22 points apiece to lead Michigan State to the win over Western Michigan in the championship of the Spartan Cutlass Classic at East Lansing. Johnson, Skiles and Carlton Valentine scored 10 points each in the first half as Michigan State moved to a 42-34 advantage at the intermission. At Minneapolis, Center John Shasky scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Minnesota to the sluggish victory over South Dakota. The Gophers led by as many as 12 points in the second half but had a difficult time with the scrappy Division II South Dakota team. Rod Ripley shot a perfect 12 for 12 from the free throw line on his way to 22 points to lift Wisconsin to the win over visiting Marquette. Wisconsin fought back from a sevenpoint deficit early in the second half to grab a 56-53 lead.
