Christmas village springs up overnight in Pennsylvania—every building edible
By The Associated Press There’s a building boom every Christmas season in Strasburg, Pa. Cabins and cottages, churches and castles seem to spring up overnight And they’re all edible. They are, of course, gingerbread houses, entries in the annual Pennsylvania Gingerbread House Inn-vitational at Historic Strasburg Inn. The contest began in 1982, as part of the Inn’s Christmas season activities. It has become a yuletide tradition, with participants of all ages and from several states vying for more
Photos preserve memories
Holidays are synonymous with loved ones and good times, but sometimes in the hustle and bustle of the festivities these happy moments escape before we have a chance to fully enjoy them. The perfect way to preserve those memories and share them with others is photographs. If the idea of taking your own pictures is frightening, don't panic. Photography today is easy with the new 35mm autofocus rangefinder cameras For instance, one thing that mars any photo is camera shake, causing a blurry image. To guard against this, hold the camera steady by placing your arms against your body. Then, place your finger on the shutter release button and gently squeeze... don't “poke” the button. Try different light sources and angles. With a 35mm rangefinder, featuring an automatic exposure system and a built-in flash, you can experiment with dim and bright lighting for a variety of effects. Include the fireplace and Christmas tree lighting to add an interesting effect to your holiday photos. Be creative. “When you’re thinking about w hat makes a good picture, look beyond the obvious,” Kerswill suggests. “Try to find a different angle, a different way of looking at what most people see, and you’ll get those special pictures that contain a part of you. ” For example,, it s not always the traditional events that make holidays memorable. Often, it is the people you see and the activities you share. Whether you’re at a party, relaxing at home or dining with friends, keep your camera handy so you don't miss the perfect photo opportunity. Although you want to record Dad’s turkey carving, snapping a photo of your nephew sharing dessert with the family cat is sure to make your remembrances more personal. “Before you snap the shutter, be sure to take a walk around the viewfinder,” continues Kerswill. Make sure all that appears is important to your picture... check to see that lamps, coat trees or plants don’t sprout from someone’s head. For Christmas portraits, fill the frame with the tree and your subject. A wider angle of view is usually necessary for candid shots. To capture the real excitement of Christmas morning opening of presents, you might even want to include the torn wrapping paper and boxes along with your subject. Those are just a few ideas to get you started photographing your personal memories.
