Big Ten's run for roses still on as contenders keep pace

By JOE MOOSHIL AP Sports Writer lowa and Michigan had points to prove and Ohio State did what was necessary Saturday when the ranking Big Ten powers rolled over conference opponents to retain their respective chances for the conference championship and Rose Bowl bid. Sixth-ranked lowa handed Illinois one of its worst defeats in history, blasting the Illini 59-0; No. 9 Michigan, showing its has firepower to go along with a dominating defense, whipped Purdue 47-0; and fourthranked Ohio State, needing only to win its remaining games to get to the Rose Bowl, swept past Northwestern 35-17. Minnesota and Michigan State, both very much alive for post-season bowl bids, also were winners. Minnesota defeated Wisconsin 27-18 and Michigan State downed Indiana 35-16. lowa’s Chuck Long fired four touchdown passes, including two in a 35-point first quarter, in lowa’s rout of Illinois as the Hawkeyes rebounded from a 22-13 loss to Ohio State that had cost them the nation’s No. 1 ranking. “I guess you’d have to call it momentum,” said lowa Coach Hayden Fry. “We came into this game mentally prepared. Our team was heartbroken and em-

Short and Mullin turn Warriors around

By WILLIAM R. BARNARD AP Basketball Writer The Golden State Warriors are learning the sweet taste of victory. “I could take a richer diet of this, rather than the sparse diet of last vear and the first six games this year,” Coach John Bach said after the Warriors, who started the season 1-5, beat upstate rival Sacramento 117-111 Sunday night for their third straight victory. All three triumphs have come since veteran Purvis Short and rookie Chris Mullin joined the team after signing contracts last Wednesday. In the first game between the two California rivals, Short scored 21 points and Mullin 12, and four other Warriors were in double figures. “We’re all getting a piece of the pie,” said Mullin, who scored 10 points in the second half and has been in double figures in all three of his NBA games.

barrassed when we lost to a fine Ohio state team. It took a lot of character for us to comeback.” Michigan displayed more than character in rebounding from a 3-3 tie vith Illinois and Jim Harbaugh led the way with three touchdown passes. “Everybody on offense was getting frustrated,” said Harbaugh of Michigan’s lack of scoring. “We kept hearing that we couldn’t play in the Big Ten. It will be interesting to hear what people have to say.” People will still be talking about a Michigan defense that has allowed but two touchdowns all season in posting three shutouts. The Wolverine defense also stifled Purdue quarterback Jim Everett, who led the nation in total offense. Everett managed to complete but 12 passes for 96 yards and was sacked three times. Ohio State’s Jim Karsatos fired three touchdown passes and completed 16 of 20 for 275 yards on a bold and wet field at Northwestern, where the Buckeyes were leading 28-0 at the half. “It wasn’t a drop in intensity,” said Karsatos of Northwestern’s ability to score 17 points in the second half. “It just started getting cold and wet, we just couldn’t do much.” Ohio State remains the favorite to gain the Rose Bowl bid. to do is win their final two games against Wisconsin and Michigan. lowa could get the bid if the Hawkeyes win their final two against Purdue and Minnesota and if Ohio State suffers one more loss. Michigan ranks outside in the run for the Roses. The Wolverines would have to win their final two games, including the one against Ohio State, and lowa would have to lose one more time. A Big Ten coup could result if Ohio State and lowa end the season victoriously. Ohio State would go to the Rose Bowl and lowa, with a possible 10-1 record, would likely nail down another major bowl bid. Michigan would still remain an attractive bowl team even if the Wolverines lose to Ohio State. Illinois could wind up with a 6-4-1 record but bowl representatives might shy away from the Illini in view of the horrendous whipping by lowa. Minnesota has a chance for an 8-3 finish but 7-4 is more likely and could get the Gophers a bid somewhere. Michigan State is another candidate if the Spartans can wind up with a 7-4 mark. lowa and Michigan hit the road this week. lowa is at Purdue and Michigan at Minnesota. For @S!fy start, IU looks good BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana was coming off its worst season in Bob Knight’s 14 years as basketball coach, and the Hoosier boss welcomed the head start for the 1985-86 campaign. “This was a good time for us to play,” he said after Saturday night’s 94-74 victory over the Czechoslovakian National team. “We’ve always played later than this, but this gives us a chance to evaluate a little bit and see what we did and didn’t do.” Steve Alford scored 26 points, Daryl Thomas added 21 points and junior college transfer Andre Harris finished with 16 to lead the Hoosier attack. “I feel more comfortable here with three weeks before we play (starting the regular season),” said Knight, whose Hoosiers were 7-11 in Big Ten play last year and were 19-14 overall after finishing second in the National Invitation Tournament. “I appreciate the chance to play the Czechoslovakian team,” Knight said. “They do some things very, very well.” The Hoosiers took the lead for good on a 15-foot jumper by Alford that broke a 26-26 tie. Indiana led 38-33 at the half, and Alford hit four three-point baskets during a span of 2:34 as Indiana took its biggest lead of the game, 86-62, with 4:16 to play. Zdenek Boehm had 21 points to lead the Czech team. “We know Coach Knight is a person who prefers defense,” Czech Coach Pavel Petera said. “I know with the exception of the first 10 or 12 minutes, they were a better team than we were. We couldn’t find a weapon against their very good defense. “Our shooting was not very good. We are used to better shooting by our players,” he said, referring to the Czechs’. 47 percent accuracy from the field to Indiana’s 52 percent. Knight said Harris, a 6-foot-7 lea per who hit eight of 15 shots from the field and led both teams with nine rebounds, “gives us something we haven’t had for the couple of years.” Knight said he was “maybe the most pleased with telling our team at halftime to go out and improve on the first half, and I thought we did that the second half.” Indiana will open regular season play on Nov. 30 against Kent State in Bloomington. Lindbergh being kept alive by respirator

STRATFORD, N.J. (AP) - Philadelphia Flyers All-Star goalie Pelle Lindbergh, left brain-dead after an automobile accident, was being kept alive today by a respirator and his family faces “a very hard decision” about the life-support system, the National Hockey League team’s doctor said. Lindbergh’s red turbocharged Porsche ran off a Camden County road before dawn Sunday and crashed into a concrete wall, causing severe injuries to his spinal cord and brain stem, doctors said. Lindbergh, 26, the Flyers’ Most Valuable Player and the league’s top goaltender last season, did not breathe for 10 to 15 minutes after the accident, according to team physician Edward Viner. “The chance of recovery is really nill, to be objective about it,” Viner said. Lindbergh’s fiance, Kerstin Pietzsch, his mother, Anna Lisa Lindbergh and a brother-in-law gathered at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital-Stratford Division, where the life-support system kept the former Swedish Olympian alive. The team said his father was due to arrive today after flying in Sunday from Sweden.

Chiropractic science recognizes that a properly functioning body is a healthy body. Whenever poor health prevails, the chiropractor treats the condition by locating and correcting the cause. All muscles, organs and glands of the body need a constant supply of nerve energy. If neryes are pinched or irritated, the supply of nerve energy will be cut off from some part of the body, which will be unable to function normally. Pain and/or poor health are the result. Chiropractic is also effective for the prevention of health problems. Phone for an appointment.

Viner said family and doctors would discuss after a couple of days whether to continue the life-support. “I’ve warned (the family) that that decision might have to be made,” Viner said. “It may be that it won’t have to be made. It may be that Mother Nature will decide this. “But because he is so strong and healthy otherwise, it may well be that it will be a very hard decision that will have to be made, but that won’t be an issue for at least 48 hours.” Two passengers in the car were also injured. Viner said Lindbergh had had something to drink, but said he did not know how much alcohol Lindbergh had consumed. Blood samples have been sent to a state police laboratory for blood-alcohol analysis, police said. Lindbergh, born in Stockholm on May 24, 1959, was drafted by the Flyers in the second round of the 1979 NHL entry draft from the Aik Solna Club in Sweden. In 1981-82, he was named to the NHL All-Rookie team. Last season, his fourth in the NHL. he posted a 40-17-7 record, leading the league in victories, and was voted the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender. His teammates voted him the Bobby Clarke Trophy as the Flyers’ Most Valuable Player.
