Controlling football may be key for South Putnam
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor This may be the first year for the fiveclass, all-inclusive high school state football tournament, but it’s the 13th year Indiana has decided championships on the field. Some schools have established a playoff tradition, while others are getting their first taste. That tradition concerns South Putnam coach Mark Wildman going into Friday night’s 7:30 p.m. Class A sectional 37 semifinal game at Fountain Central. The high school is located just off highway 136 in Veedersburg. ‘‘THEY’VE GOT THE tradition where they’ve had people in the playoffs before. This is our first playoff,” Wildman said of his 6-3 Eagles. ‘‘Where we’re still trying to start a (playoff) tradition, they’re playing on theirs.” Fountain Central, also 6-3, won the 1983 Class A state championship under since departed coach Mark Malone. The senior Mustangs were sophomores filling in gaps on the team that defeated Tri-West en route to the title. “We have a few big kids, but not as many as we’ve had in the past,” first-year coack Mike Landis said comparing this year’s Mustangs to the title team. But tradition has meant little in this year’s state tournament. Last week former state champions Mishawaka Marian, Blackford, Columbus East, Greenfield, Indianapolis Washington, Oak Hill and South Bend Washington were all eliminated, along with this area’s playoff regulars Edgewood and Martinsville. “THEY’LL COME OUT and they’ll expect to win and they’ll play like they ex-

pect to win,” Wildman said of the Mustangs. Putnam fans may see a little more conservative brand of plays from becauuse possession is ninetenths of the law and the best defense on a football field. “I think they can have a drive,” Wildman said. “A big play offense is okay, but if you don’t have the ball it’s not going to help any. I compare them with Greencastle as far as that goes.” The Mustangs run a balanced option offense. They’ve thrown for 1,268 yards and rushed for 1,543 yards. Quarterback Jeff Roberts has completed 53 of 119 passes and until last week’s 19-14 win over Turkey Run had only been intercepted three times. WHEN THE 5-10, 160-pound senior throws, 6-1, 160-pound wide receiver Brett Carlson or 6-0, 165-pound tight end Steve Abney are usually the targets. Carlson, a junior, has caught 27 passes for 583 yards and Abney 23 passes for 381 yards.

Ben Nine, a 5-11, 165-pound sophomore, and Donald Wilson, a 5-11, 169-pound senior are the leading ball carriers. Nine has rushed for 645 yards and Wilson 508. According to the scouting report South Putnam will see an eight-man front defense. “If they stay in it. We’ve expected an eight-man front a couple of times, but teams seem to change when they played against us,” Wildman said. “We don’t expect them to change their whole defense against us, but they’re probably making some adjustments.” NOBODY HAS TRIED to play the Eagles with eight up front and three defensive backs man-to-man in the secondary. Even Owen Valley put in a 4-3 defense just before playing South. “They throw the ball an awful lot to have an eight-man front against,” Landis admitted, looking at the Eagle offense. Whether Mustangs change or not, Wildman is confident the Eagles can execute against them. If Fountain Central plays the eight-man front then Tony Lewis, the state’s No. 12 passer according to this week’s IHSAA compiled stats, could have a field day. If not, fullback Dan Smetzer and tailback Bruce Bridgewater could be busy, as well as receivers Brian Meek, John Bridgewater, Greg Phillips and Chris Sullivan in a control-type passing game. Wildman expects Darrin Lewis to play this week. The senior will start at noseguard but will not play offense. THE WINNER AT Fountain Central plays the winner of the Covington (8-1) at Attica (7-2) game in the sectional championship contest Nov. 8. South Putnam would host the title game if they win at Fountain Central.
Tiger Cubs know Cadets are looking for revenge
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor One of the toughest halves of high school football Greencastle played this season was against Cascade. After building a 27-6 halftime lead the Tiger Cubs had to hang on for a 27-18 victory over the Cadets. If there were any questions left unanswered between the West Central Conference rivals they will surely be answered in Friday night’s 7:30 p.m. Class 2A sectional 27 semifinal game at Greencastle High School. THE TWO HEAD coaches came out of the first meeting with two completely different opinions. Greencastle coach John Fallis called it a flat performance, while Cascade coach Mike Costlow felt it was the step in the right direction after a 1-4 start. “They played well in the second half against us, and outscored us in the second half 12-0, but I don’t feel like there was anyway they should have beaten us,” Fallis said of the fifth Tiger Cub win. Costlow believes the Cadets have a little something to prove. “I think we can prove to them we can play four quarters against them and beat them,” the first-year coach said. “That was a big turning point in our season. THAT IS MORE than accurate. Since putting 12 points on the scoreboard in two quarters and gaining 293 yards of total offense against the Tiger Cubs, the Cadets have been tough. They beat North Putnam 6-0 the next week, lost 27-21 in overtime to Danville, edged Monrovia 21-20 and beat North Putnam in last week’s sectional opener 13-7. “They’re a capable football team. They run the ball hard and they play good defense and they’re a physical football team,” Fallis said. At this stage of the season there are a few secrets. “It’s basically a power struggle,” Costlow said. “It’s our power versus their power with a few passes thrown in to keep you honest. The whole point of this game is going to be at the line of scrimmage. Because the backs can’t do anything if the line doesn’t block.” COSTLOW ISN’T REALLY concerned about Greencastle’s unusual wishbone offense. “The only thing that really bothers

us is if (Steve) Penley is at full strength. When they played us before he really tore us up,” the coach said, recalling Penley’s season-high 192-yard, three touchdown performance. Penley ran the ball only seven times for 37 yards and played no defense last week because of a sprained ankle. “We haven’t tested it yet this week. He’s improving all the way along. The game last week didn’t set him back any. He’s made continual improvement and hopefully that will keep on improving through Friday night,” Fallis said. Quarterback John Hecko took up the slack for Penley, running the option or passing, completing 7 of 10 aerials 138 yards and two touchdowns. Split end Joe Franklin pulled in 113 yards worth of those passes and scored two touchdowns. “I FELT LIKE all along, after the scouts came back, what made him (Franklin) so good was that the quarterback had so much time to throw,” Costlow said. “So we don’t plan on giving him so much time to throw.” Greencastle’s defense gave up 293 yards of total offense to Cascade in the first meeting and quarterback William Smith had 135 yards rushing. “Last time I’d say a couple of their touchdowns were either

scored on the (quarterback) sneak or set up by the sneak. That’s not very common in high school football,” Fallis said. “We had a failure to carry out an assignment on the line of scrimmage. It wasn’t a matter of getting whipped one-on-one, it was just not taking the proper alignment, the proper technique,” Fallis said. “I didn’t know that until I looked at the film the next day. During the game, if we had known what was going wrong we would have corrected it.” SMITH PROVED HE could also throw the ball that night, completing four in a row during one touchdown drive. “He’s a good athlete. They don’t have to throw it much, they don’t throw it a lot, but they’ve been throwing it effectively. That can hurt you in crucial situations,” Fallis said. Last week though fullbacks John Snider and Tony Wade were hurting North Putnam until both were injured during the first half. Wade, who was taken away in an ambulance for precautionary measures, should play this week, but Costlow was waiting for a doctor’s release on Snider Wednesday.
