Clippers rally for third win
By The Associated Press It’s been so long since the Los Angeles Clippers started a season 3-0 that they’ve had two name changes and two franchise moves in between. The Clippers, who were the Buffalo Braves in 1975 when they last were 3-0, posted their third straight comeback victory Tuesday night to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 119-113 in National Basketball Association action. “It’s like a kid playing with fire. Eventually, he’s going to get burned,” Coach Don Chaney said of the three unlikely rallies. “We’ve been toying with teams until halftime and then we come back.” Unheralded guard Derek Smith, averaging 30 points in the three games, led the Clippers with 28 points, while Franklin Edwards added 17. Tuesday’s triumph came after Los Angeles was 14 points behind.
Burgos picks Purdue
CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - John Brugos, a 6-foot-9 senior at Crown Point High School, announced he will play basketball next season at Purdue University, Crown Point Coach Jim Black said. The verbal commitment Tuesday is not binding. Formal letters of intent may not be signed until the NCAA’s early recruiting period next month.
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) An NCAA attendance record was set as Purdue University’s women’s volleyball team defeated Western Michigan in three out of four games. Attendance for the non-conference dual match at Mackey Arena Tuesday night was logged at 10,645. W'estem Michigan had held the
SURVIV E THE FALL WATCH OUT FOR POWER LINES
Fall.. .the season of crisp cool days, brilliant colors, woodsmoke, hayridcs, falling leaves and...danger! Public Service Indiana urges you to be careful. In their eagerness to get busy in the brisk Autumn air, people often forget the potential hazards that power lines create. Cleaning gutters, painting trim, washing windows and adjusting antennas can put you next to serious trouble. Look for power lines before you work and make sure antennas and ladders are at least twice their length away from lines.
Lakers 133, Mavericks 115 Los Angeles outscored Dallas 101-69 the rest of the game after falling behind by 14 points in the second period. James Worthy scored 21 points, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar added 20 and Michael Cooper had 19 points and 11 assists for the Lakers, whose 16-4 run before halftime wiped out most of the Mavericks’ 46-32 lead. Los Angeles played without Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who has a case of shingles. Bucks 119, 76ers 117 Milwaukee, eliminated by Philadelphia in four straight games in the playoffs last season, won the return match when Sidney Moncrief hit a 15-foot jumper with one second remaining. Moncrief, who scored 23 points, made the game-winner after Julius Erving’s jumper tied the score with 17 seconds left.
“My own opinion is that he can play Big Ten basketball, and apparently Purdue feels the same way,” Black said. “He had visited three universities this fall and felt Purdue was the best choice for him.” Brugos averaged 15.3 points and 10.6 rebounds a game last season, helping the Bulldogs to a 19-5 record.
Boilermakers set mark
previous record of 8,543 in a 1983 match with Nebraska. Western Michigan topped the Boilermakers 15-11 in the first match. Purdue came back to score 15-6, 15-5 and 15-2 as the 16th ranked Boilermakers rose to 20-2. Western Michigan, ranked 12th, fell to 17-2.

Hawks 102, Knicks 87 Dominique Wilkins, after starting Atlanta’s first two games at guard, moved to forward opposite his brother, Gerald, and led the Hawks over New York. Dominique had 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Gerald, a rookie, managed only four points for the Knicks. The Hawks, who outrebounded New York 60-44, led 27-21 after the first quarter and extended the margin to 50-33 nine minutes later. Rookie Patrick Ewing led the Knicks with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Pistons 124, Nets 107 Kelly Tripucka scored 27 points, while Bill Laimbeer and John Long added 24 apiece as Detroit outscored New Jersey. Woolridge and Banks take up for Jordan
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Chicago Bulls proved they could win even without Michael Jordan Tuesday night. But they hope they won’t have to do it too often. Jordan, the superstar guard now in his second National Basketball Association season, left the Bulls game against the Golden State Warriors with a jammed ankle late in the first half. But Chicago rallied down the stretch for a 111-105 victory to remain unbeaten at 3-0. Bulls trainer Mark Pfeil said Jordan came down on his ankle after going up for a rebound, but that his injury shouldn’t keep him out of any more games. Jordan’s 12 point output was his lowest as a pro. Instead of Jordan, the Bulls relied on forwards Orlando Woolrdige and Gene Banks, who combined for 45 points. Center Jawann Oldham also played a starring role by contributing a key block and tipping in the go-ahead basket with 41 seconds left. “We executed well, and did the basic
If an antenna or ladder does fall onto a power line, don’t touch it. Call us. And when you’re buttoning-up a swimming pool for cool weather, watch out for power lines, too! Long-handled cleaning and rescue poles can tangle with high voltage and cause a real tragedy. Public Service Indiana wants you to enjoy Autumn in comfort and safety. So when the leaves fall, leave those power lines alone...be careful!

The Nets, who got 25 points from Otis Birdsong, rallied to go ahead 72-71 in the third quarter, but a three-point goal from Isiah Thomas gave Detroit the lead for good at 78-76. Bullets 97, Cavaliers 90 Dan Roundfield scored 13 of his 17 points in the third period as Washington extended a three-point halftime lead over Cleveland to 16. A 17-2 Bullets run erased an early 17-5 deficit, and they led 49-46 at halftime before Roundfield’s surge gave them a 7559 lead going into the fourth quarter. World B. Free led all scorers with 24 points for the Cavaliers. Spurs 124, Jazz 112 Alvin Robertson scored 23 points and newly acquired David Greenwood led a 5737 San Antonio rebounding advantage with 20 rebounds against Utah.
things we needed to win,” said Chicago Assistant Coach Murray Arnold, who took over for head coach Stan Albeck during a one-game suspension. “Orlando made things happen offensively. He drove to the hole, found the open man, and scored when he had to. He gave us a big lift,” Arnold said. Woolridge finished with 27 points, while Warriors guard Sleepy Floyd collected a game-high 32 points. Floyd hit his fourth three-point field goal with 1:02 remaining in the game to tie the score aa 105-105. But Oldhams’ tip-in and a lay-up by Banks with 15 seconds left in the game gave the Bulls some breathing room. Banks added a pair of free throws with six seconds left to finish the scoring. “Floyd put on an incredible three-point shooting display,” said Arnold. “But they were forced to go with three pointers at the end, and we were jamming it down their throats.”
