'Cosby.' NBC tops again

Comedy king in Nielsen ratings

By JERRY BUCK AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) Comedy and sports dominated the Top 15, and since NBC had its share of both, the network won its third week in the 4-week-old prime-time season. ABC also had some highranking sports events and comedy series, but because the network had nine of the bottom 15 shows to CBS’ five and NBC’s one, ABC finished in last place again. For the week of Oct. 14-20, NBC averaged a 19.4 rating, its best week this season, according to figures released Tuesday by the A C. Nielsen Co. CBS had a 16.6 and ABC a 16.3.

After four weeks, NBC’s average rating is 18.5 to CBS’ 17.1 and ABC’s 15.0. A rating measures the percentage of the nation’s 85.9 million TV homes. As it has done all season, NBC’s “The Cosby Show" easily topped the ratings chart with a 31.1 rating and 49 share (percentage of sets in use), its highest share ever. The followup program, “Family Ties,” was second with a 28.1. NBC’s other Thursday comedies, “Cheers” and “Night Court,” were fourth and 12th, respectively. For NBC, the deciding Game 7 of the American League Championship series ranked fifth and Game 6 was 14th. In addition, NBC had a pair of

female-appeal movies that performed well against ABC’s “Monday Night Football” and World Series Game 2 Game 7 of the AL Championship Series, the clincher for Kansas City, was the fifth highest rated playoff game ever and the highest since 1980. “The Fall Guy,” which ABC will pull from the schedule in November, was the week’s lowest-rated show with a 6.9 rating in the tough time slot occupied by “The Cosby Show” and CBS’ “Magnum, P I.” Also in the bottom five, in descending order, were ABC’s “Our Family Honor,” ABC’s “Lady Blue,” ABC’s “Spenser: For Hire,” which will swap time periods with “Our Family
