People in the news Three generations of Mitchumsstar At the age of 68, Robert Mitchum is still cranking them out more than a hundred movies to date and a burgeoning list of television credits. The latest is “Promises to Keep,” a three-generation bonanza of Mitchums that will be broadcast Tuesday at 8 p.m., on CBS. It stars the senior Mitchum as an aging wanderer who abandoned his wife and 10-year-old boy, hasn’t been heard from in 30 years, and suddenly shows up to make amends to the grown son who hates him and the grandson he has never known. The movie co-stars Christopher Mitchum, Robert Mitchum’s 42-year-old son, and Bentley Mitchum, his 18-year-old grandson, along with Claire Bloom. For Robert Mitchum, it was apparently just another job. “You hear about the guy who picks up his lunchbox, goes to work, clocks in and clocks out, working toward the day when he can do nothing,” he says, deadpan. “That’s what I do. I’m hired to play George, I play George.” And these days, he professes not to care whether he is making a feature film or television fodder. “Not anymore,” he says. “I used to before I lost my girlish laughter. What do I look for now? The shortest time, the most money, the best location. I remember early on, when I was at RKO, they told me, ‘We don’t make pictures we make money.’ Why do I keep working? I need the money. Why do I do television? That’s what’s offered. I don’t have to watch it; that doesn’t come with the contract.” But for Mitchum’s son, this project was a milestone event: the first time Christopher Mitchum had ever acted with his father (unless you count two appearances as a movie extra many years ago) and his own son’s first professional acting job. Christopher Mitchum shepherded "Promises” through two years of development and what his father describes as “about 26 different scripts,” and when the time came to film he was nervous. “I wanted him to be proud of me,” Christopher Mitchum says softly. “Whether he is or not, God knows; he’ll never tell me. Until we did this picture together I never had any evidence he knew what I did for a living.” The elder Mitchum is hardly sentimental about his offspring. Of Christopher Mitchum’s choice of career, he snorts and says, “I guess he thought this was an easy way to go.” Of his son’s appearance: “He looked like a girl all those blond curls and blue eyes.” Asked about Bentley Mitchum, his grandfather looks momentarily startled. “I can’t get used to that name,” he mutters. “Bentley had purple hair and two earrings. Or orange hair. A punker.” MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Social and cultural barriers, including the view that women are still considered the primary parent, has caused the disparity between the number of men and women judges, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor said. “Women have come a long way,” O’Connor toldthe annual convention of the National Association of Women Judges on Sunday. But she said the “number of female judges remains disproportionately small,” at only 4 percent. Such problems, have helped bring women lawyers together, however, O’Connor told the group she helped found in 1979. “The experiences of each new generation of women judges have enduring values for those who follow.”

LONDON (AP) Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s 60 years represent “no great age in politics,” a leading British newspaper said, noting that President Reagan is 74 and Chinese Leader Deng Xioping is 81. Mrs. Thatcher “is blessed with a natural energy and strength of purpose guaranteed to take her well beyond pensionable age in the service of her party and country,” the Sunday Times said in an editorial Sunday, the prime minister’s birthday. Besides laurels in the press, more than 200 birthday cards and dozens of bouquets of flowers piled up at No. 10 Downing St., the prime minister’s London residence. Mrs. Thatcher celebrated the occasion at home with her family. LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) Charles K. Johnson says Christopher Columbus proved the earth was flat, and everybody who believes it is round is the victim of an elaborate hoax. “In 1492 it was generally believed the world was a globe as it had been for centuries and centuries,” Johnson, founder of the Flat Earth Research Society International and of the Covenant People’s Church, said Sunday. “This was an ancient Greek superstition. Columbus, though, he knew it was flat,” Johnson said in a telephone interview Sunday. Johnson and his followers he claims 2,300 worldwide gather every year around Columbus Day. “My wife is from Australia,” he said, “and she’ll testify that she did not hang from her feet.”

Actresses Suzanne Somers, 39, and Angela Lansbury, 60, share Wednesday’s honors, while Thursday means No. 58 for actor Tom Poston, No. 47 for daredevil Evel Knievel, No. 37 for actress Margot Kidder and No. 67 for actress Rita Hayworth. Adding a year on Friday will be rock ‘n’ roller Chuck Berry, 59, actor George C. Scott, 58, sportscaster Keith Jackson, 57, and actress Pam Dawber, 34. Amy Carter is 18 next Saturday, while columnist Jack Anderson is 63 and singer Jeannie C. Riley is 40.
