People in the news 'I just called to say 111 sue you../ LOS ANGELES (AP) A friend of singer-composer Stevie Wonder said his $lO million lawsuit accusing Wonder of stealing the Oscar-winning song “I Just Called to Say I Love You” was filed "with the deepest, deepest of regrets,” a lawyer says. Lee Garrett, who has known Wonder since 1964, and musician Lloyd Chiate claim they wrote “I Just Called to Say” in 1978 while staying with Wonder in a Hollywood hotel and gave him a demonstration tape, attorney Jack Whitley said Monday Wonder’s song won a 1984 Oscar as the theme for the film “The Woman in Red,” and Whitley said Wonder could lose his Oscar if a jury finds against him. Wonder, 35, will not comment on the suit, a spokesman said, and his co-defendants, Motown Records, Orion Pictures and GTE Sprint Communications, made no immediate comment. WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) Little Richard, the flamboyant 1950 s rocker whose hits included “Tutti Frutti” and “Good Golly, Miss Molly,” was seriously injured early today when his car crashed into a telephone pole, authorities said. “He is in serious but stable condition, suffering from a fractured right leg, possible head injury and a possible rib fracture,” Cedars-Sinai Medical Center spokesman Ron Wise said. He said the entertainer was conscious. It took firefighters 15 minutes to remove the 52-year-old singer, whose real name is Richard Penniman, from the wreckage of his Nissan 300 SX sports car, according to Deputy Dave Hogan. Little Richard’s brand of gut-wrenching music fuses gospel with rhythm and blues and rock ’n’ roll. His mid-’sos hits also included “Jenny, Jenny” and “Long Tall Sally.” “He was driving on Santa Monica Boulevard at a high rate of speed and lost control and hit a telephone pole,” Hogan said. • BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Rock star John Cougar Mellencamp has bought a tract of undeveloped land near Bloomington from the Indiana University Foundation. Representatives of the foundation and Mellencamp declined to discuss the sale price or what Mellencamp plans to do with the property. The memorandum says the foundation agreed to sell about 152 acres to Mellencamp and his wife, Victoria. The land is just east of Bloomington and north of Indiana 46. Mellencamp is a native of Seymour and has a home in the Bloomington area. • CLEVELAND (AP) Former Mayor Dennis J. Kucinich, 39, said he hoped his just-completed 541-mile walk across Ohio would reinforce his name recognition among voters in his campaign for the Democratic nomination for governor. “The message is one of unity,” Kucinich, now a city councilman, said Monday. “Through this walk I’m seeking to unify the state.” The journey Kucinich began Sept. 5 would have been 240 miles, but he extended it by moving alternately east and west while heading north. The primary is in May.

(AP) Like many Malibu hill dwellers, trumpeter Lee Loughnane of the rock group Chicago drives to fire hydrants for drinking water. Every few months, Loughnane rents a 1,500-gallon water tanker at $135 a day, fills it at a nearby hydrant, then empties it repeatedly into the 10,000-gallon water tank at his home overlooking the Pacific. It’s about an eight-hour task. “That should be enough water for two to four months,” Loughnane said after his last run a couple of weeks ago. “I should be good through most of the winter.” • CHICAGO (AP) Mike Wittkowski still dresses casually, drinks the same brand of beer, plans to marry his longtime girlfriend and pals around with his old buddies. But he has had to take on financial advisers, one of the few things about him that has changed in the year since he won S4O million in the Illinois Lotto Game North America’s richest single lottery prize. “I don’t need a lot to make me happy,” Wittkowski, 29, said in a recent interview The jackpot is being doled out in $2 million annual installments over 20 years, split four ways with his brother, sister and their father. “Most of the money is in safe, insured investments.
