People in the nsws 'Obnoxious bully' returns to IM.J. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) usual’’ when Frank Sinatra returns to perform in this gambling resort after a yearlong absence started when he was called an “obnoxious bully” by a state official. “He wants the past to be the past and we’re just starting afresh,” said Muriel Harris, a spokeswoman for the Golden Nugget, where Sinatra, a Hoboken native, will appear Oct 9-13. In July, the 69-year-old entertainer settled his differences with Casino Control Commissioner Joel Jacobson, who called him an “obnoxious bully” after a December 1983 incident in which Sinatra and Dean Martin demanded that a Golden Nugget blackjack dealer deal from her hand. New Jersey law demands that dealers distribute cards from a plastic container. Sinatra spokesman Lee Solters said, “It’s business as usual.” • LOS ANGELES (AP) Comedian George Burns said he would do without “a couple cigars” after he donated $1 million to a hospital for indigent actors and actresses. The donation will fund a four-bed, intensive care unit at the Motion Picture and Television County House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, 25 miles northwest of Los Angeles, spokesman Bob Werden said Tuesday. “So I’ll do without a couple cigars,” said Burns, 85, who four years ago deeded ownership in a $500,000 supermarket to the facility, which is seeking SSO million to double its capacity. • NYACK, N.Y. (AP) Actress Helen Hayes, who has had a hospital and a theater named after her, can at least temporarily add a road to that list, a stretch of street in her hometown just north of New York City. Mayor Albion Volk said the Village Board decided to rename a half-mile section of the street Helen Hayes Avenue for two months in honor of the actress’ 85th birthday Thursday.
GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) Bert Parks, fired in 1980 after 25 years as host of the Miss America pageant, will oversee the crowning of another beauty contest winner Saturday. Parks, 70, who lives in Greenwich, will be master of ceremonies at the finals of the second annual Miss Asia Beauty Pageant at Madison Square Garden in New York. More than 100 contestants, ages 18 to 27, from 15 countries are participating. • MONROE, N.C. (AP) The image of Goober Beesley on “The Andy Griffith Show” has been impossible to shake, said George Lindsey, who played Goober on the longrunning comedy and its successor, “Mayberry RFD.” “I think it stopped my career as far as dramatic roles are concerned,” said Lindsey, whose character pumped gasoline at the fictional town’s filling station. He was interviewed by the Monroe Enquirer-Journal for an article on Thursday’s 25th anniversary of the show, which starred Andy Griffith, Don Knotts and Ron Howard, and ran from 1960 to 1968.

SCHWARZENEGGER Funny man, too
How is Sylvester Stallone’s “Rambo” different from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Commando?” According to 20th Century-Fox, Schwarzenegger’s legendary commando fighter, who comes out of retirement when his daughter is kidnapped, is deliberately rather than inadvertently camp. After telling one villain that he likes him and will kill him last, Schwarzenegger drops the villain off a precipice and shouts after him, “I lied.” Later, when asked what he has done with the villain, he says cheerily, “I let him go.” Schwarzenegger says of “Commando,” which opened Thursday: “The problem is that I can’t go all out being funny because my daughter is in jeopardy. The trick is to say the funny lines without appearing to have fun. When I am asked about a man whom I’ve just killed and I say, ‘Don’t disturb him, he’s dead tired,’ there has to be a serious look on my face. SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) Sidney Clute, the actor who played Detective Paul LaGuardia on CBS’s “Cagney & Lacey” television series, died Wednesday of cancer. He was 69. After early training in summer stock, Clute came to Hollywood in the 1950 s and made his television debut in "The Adventures of Superman.” Other TV credits include appearances on "Playhouse 90,” “McCloud,” “Dragnet” and “Lou Grant.” Other film credits included “The Big Fix” and “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming.” • NEW YORK (AP) Charles Collingwood, a veteran CBS correspondent whose career spanned four decades, died Thursday of cancer at age 68. Collingwood broke into reporting as a United Press correspondent in 1939, covering the start of World War II in Europe. He joined CBS in 1941 as part of Edward R. Murrow’s original team of reporters in London and became the network’s first United Nations correspondent. Collingwood then moved back to London as chief of bureau before being named chief foreign correspondent in 1964, a position he held for 11 years Collingwood had beep ,o special correspondent for CBS since his retirement in 1982 Collingwood also served as the host-narrator of the “Chronicle” series, as the reporter on the “Eyewitness” series, and as the host of the “Adventure" series. He was the recipient of numerous journalism awards, including the Peabody Award, two awards from the National Headliners Club and several awards from the Overseas Press Club.
