Dear Abby: Reader outraged over child harness endorsement

DEAR ABBY: From reading your column, I know that you regard children as subhuman creatures who were put on earth to serve as flunkies for adults, and as such they are not entitled to the same basic human dignity as adults. But your wholehearted support for “Careful Mother,” who puts a harness on her 2-year-old child, struck me as particularly outrageous, even for you. A child is not a dog, Abby. There are plenty of ways to keep a child from wandering off without subjecting him to the humiliation of being leashed. As I see it, using a harness to control a child is an admission that the parent is too lazy to (1) teach the child as soon as he can walk never to leave the parent’s sight, and (2) keep an eagle eye on the child every minute. DEAR HELOISE: 1 hope you can help me with a big problem. I recently trusted my favorite down coat to a local drycleaner but when I got it back there were oil spots on it that had not been there before. The cleaner said the oil in the feathers of the down should have been removed before they were put into the coat. Is this true? J. Rhodes

Calendar of events Friday A Brown Bag Recital featuring Renaissance Music performers on the flute and fife, lute, harpsichord, recorders, violin and percussion instruments will be held Friday, Oct. 4 at First Christian Church, located at the intersection of Indiana and Poplar, Greencastle.
