People in the news Hinckley to wed mental patient, 41 NEW YORK (AP) John W. Hinckley Jr., who shot President Reagan in 1981, is engaged to be married to a 41-year-old patient at the mental institution where he is committed, according to reports by NBC News and The Washington Post. NBC, quoting unidentified officials at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C., said the woman killed her 7-year-old daughter. The network reported that officials said Hinckley has given up his obsession with actress Jodie Foster. Hinckley shot Reagan on March 30,1981, in an effort to impress Miss Foster, who starred in “Taxi Driver” and was then a college student. The Post said the woman is mentioned in “Breaking Points,” Hinckley’s parents’ book about their ordeal after their son shot the president. In the book, they say she is one of those who have “encouraged us through their letters, prayers and expressions of love.” Hinckley shot and wounded Reagan outside the Washington Hilton hotel. Three other men were wounded in the shooting, including White House Press Secretary James Brady. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity • NEW YORK (AP) —■ Actress Peggy Cass has been awarded $450,000 after a jury found that a surgeon operated on her right knee instead of her left, which was affected by an arthritic condition. Miss Cass, 63, testified last week that when she told a recovery room nurse about the error after the December 1980 operation, she was anesthetized again and underwent surgery on the other knee. Miss Cass, who once appeared in the play “Agnes of God,” said, “I’ll never play a nun again, because I can’t kneel.” • MALIBU, Calif. (AP) Actor Jan-Michael Vincent, accused of punching a woman in the face and violating probation, faces a hearing next month after refusing to enter a plea to the charges. Vincent, 40, star of the “Airwolf” television series, was arrested last month after Chenoa Lee Ellis, 34, claimed Vincent attacked her on Sept. 6, breaking her nose and splitting her lip. Vincent, charged with two counts of battery and two counts of violating probation, said Ms. Ellis caused trouble between him and his girlfriend, authorities said. • DENVER (AP) Rock star Bruce Springsteen is suing a tavern in Grand Junction over copyright infringement, claiming that a band appearing there sang “Dancing in the Dark” without paying the required copyright fees. The federal court suit maintains that Charles Exner, owner of the Outpost Saloon, failed to pay the fee to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Such actions are common in the music industry. The lawsuit asks that Exner be barred from playing the song and that he pay damages of SIO,OOO to $250,000. Exner said he said he made out a check for more than SIOO as first-quarter fees last winter after a visit from an ASCAP agent, who never returned to pick it up. “There ain’t no SIO,OOO problem here,” said Exner. “I don’t even make SIO,OOO a year. I have a little bitty club.”

JOHN HINCKLEY JR. Engaged to patient

NEW YORK (AP) Actor Yul Brynner is “making very good progress” recovering from the mild case of bacterial meningitis that hospitalized him last month, his press agent says. “His doctors expect him to be out of the hospital shortly,” spokesman Josh Ellis said Tuesday. Brynner, 65, entered New York Hospital for tests Sept. 3. • NEW YORK Right from the beginning, which was almost a year ago, Nancy Walker insisted that she didn’t want to do a one-woman show. She wanted, she said in no uncertain terms, a terrific leading man and a top musical banana tc appear with her in her return to Broadway after 25 years. Walker’s show, which was going to be called “Nancy’s Turn,” has now become “Back on the Town” and it will be here, if all goes smoothly, in February. In the meantime, Liliane Montevecchi, who won a Tony Award for “Nine,” has signed on as co-star and Charles Duming is a top candidate for the leading man in a cast of 14. The list of composers writing new material for the revue is studded with award winners, among them Marvin Hamlisch (“A Chorus Line”) and Charles Strouse (“Annie”). An equally impressive list is creating sketches, including Martin Chamin, who is also directing, Thomas Meehan of “Annie” fame, Joel Siegel, the television critic, and Paul Mazursky, who gave us the film “Moscow on the Hudson.” Tony winners Peter Gennaro and Florence Klotz will be doing choreography and costumes. • PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) Elen Lauper, the older sister of pop star Cyndi Lauper, has been disqualified as a candidate for Phoenix’s mayoral election next month because of invalid signatures on her nominating papers. Ms. Lauper, 33, had 2,715 signatures on her petition and needed 1,500, but city officials said Tuesday her list contained only 860 registered voters. Ms. Lauper, a steelworker and Socialist Workers Party member, announced her candidacy in April • SPACE CENTER, Houston <AP) Christa McAuliffe, the Concord, N.H., social studies teacher scheduled to ride the space shuttle on Jan. 22, has finished three weeks of astronaut training but says she still has lots to learn. “We’ve had to work some weekends,” Ms. McAuliffe, 37, said Tuesday. “We’ve still got five or six work books to study at home and that amounts to 20 or 30 hours of reading.” She said that since training began Sept 10. she has spent 10 to 12 hours daily at Johnson Space Center preparing for her six-day mission.
