Black earns two places PONCA CITY, Okla. - Brian Black has captured two more awards for riding his motorcycle in national competition. BLACK FINISHED 19TH and 20th in two divisions of competition recently at the National Minicycle Association Nationals in Ponca City, Okla. This was a new division of competition and the nine-year-old was at the back end of the age division. He’ll have two more years in the nine to 11-year-old division. THE SON OF Dr. and Mrs. Tom Black finished 19th in the modified 60 cc division, and 20th in the 60 cc stock division. Tiger Cubs fall to Patriots TERRE HAUTE - Only one match went three sets Tuesday as Terre Haute North ruined Greencastle’s opening high school boys tennis meet of the year 5-0. “WE WERE PLAYING a strong Terre Haute North team, they’re sectional favorites down there,” Cub coach Dan Layton said. “They’ve got some matches under their belt and we’re playing our first. ” Mark Smith defeated Greencastle’s Mike Wells 6-0,6-1 in the No. 1 singles position. Mike Lawson was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Mike Opdahl at No. 2 and Lane Cutter outlasted Drew Brattain in the longest match of the day 4-6,6-3, 7-5. MARK ELEY AND Mark Griffin scored a 6-3, 6-0 win over Tom Catanese and Corey Stinnett at No. 1 doubles and Andy Harmening and Matt Effner were 6-0, 6-0 victors over Dave Schwartz and Todd Curry to end the shutout. North also won the junior varsity match 5-0.

Sharks have title to defend now

Bv STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor How much damage can the graduation of one person do to a sectional championship team? That’s the question Greencastle High School girls swimming coach Paul Bretscher is asking and trying to answer while preparing the Tiger Sharks for their Sept. 11 season opener at Terre Haute North. “She was the only one, but that was a big one,” the sixth-year coach said. LEAH SCHOENFELD GRADUATED, but with 11 returnees from the SouthmontIHSAA sectional title team, including two state-meet qualifiers and 22 girls on the roster, Greencastle will get little sympathy. “I think we’ll be better than we were last year, but several of the teams that we swam against I know have improved greatly,” Bretscher predicted. The 22-swimmer roster is made up of four seniors, seven juniors, four * sophomores and seven freshmen. It’s a solid mixture of veterans that remember the climb to the top, and those that can insure strength for the future. “A lot of the returning people want to repeat the sectional title. And I’ve already told them we may be defending champions, but we’re under-dogs because of what Southmont has picked up,” Bretscher said. CARRIE NEALON AND Jodi Billman lead the iist of returnees, as both qualified for the IHSAA State Meet last November. Only a sophomore, Nealon became the first Greencastle swimmer to score in the state meet (top 16 places score), finishing 11th in the 500-meter freestyle and 13th in the 200-meter freestyle. Billman went to the state meet as a sophomore diver and after a summer of camps in her specialized area should be considered a contender to score points as a junior. Members of this year’s team already hold six Greencastle High School and two McAnally Pool records, Nealon figuring into the majority of them. Nealon holds individual school records in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.88), 200-yard individual medley (2:23.55) and 500-yard freestyle (5:16.88). She also teamed with Amanda Myers, Kristi Gould and Schoenfeld to set the 400-yard freestyle record (4:01.88).

North Putnam bumps off Eels

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor ROACHDALE - Not a thing of beauty, but dog-gone-it, it counts as a win,” coach Ron Price said. After frustrating losses to experienced Turkey Run and Tri-West teams in the first two matches, Tuesday night’s 15-13,15-3 victory over visiting Eminence was a big lift for the Cougars. “THIS WAS SIMILAR to our first two games in the way we played,” Price compared, noting the Cougars are a team of scrappers. Actually they had to scrap very little for this win. Dawn Watson and Rebecca Busch served North into a 6-1 lead to open game one and Sarah Griffin increased the margin to 8-1. But without a veteran player on the court for leadership, the Cougars’ inexperience showed up during an Eminence rally.

Greencastle opens the high school girls swimming season an experienced squad and with the additional pressure of being defending sectional champions. Members of the Tiger Shark team are (front row, from left): Lisa Buis, Rose Marie Newgent, Kim Hinkle, Kim Black, Carrie Nealon, Shannon Boone, Jenni Lancaster, Ann Pierson and (second row, from left) Lori Combs, Liz

JUNIOR CRISTINA OPDAHL and senior Dina Duncan also hold records. Opdahl is defending her backstroke record (1:06.81), while Duncan will be trying to regain the form of her sophomore season when she set the 100-yard breaststroke record (1:15.28). Duncan joined Erika Greenawald, Schoenfeld and Lisa McCabe during that same 1983 season to set the 200-yard medley relay record (2:02.51). “I try never to expect anything, but I can conceive of every single record being broken this year. I can dream of that happening,” Bretscher said. GOING DOWN THE list of upper classmen, or returnees, the strength is there. In addition to those individual record holders already mentioned, also returning are seniors Greenawald, Jennie Ferriss and Kristi Gould and juniors Myers, Michelle Jones and Lori Combs. Despite the number of veterans, Bretscher can see some freshmen contributing in a big way. “Kim Hinkle, by the end of the season, could conceivably be better

Using North mistakes, Eminence tied the first game 10-10 and again 13-13. But a kill by Ronda Busch gave the Cougars a 1413 edge and that was the last action. A penalty point for an illegal substitution by Eminence gave North game one, 15-13. WATSON SERVED NORTH to a quick 50 lead and game two never got closer than that score. Rebecca Busch led North with eight service points, followed by Watson with seven, Cheryl Mcßride with five, Nicole Glass and Griffin with four each and Jennifer Kelso with two. North attempted only 19 spikes for the match and only five stayed down for kills. “The offense comes with experience because so much timing is involved,” Price predicted. Ronda Busch had three of the five Cougar kills. THE LOSS DROPPED Eminence to 1-3 for the year, but the junior varsity Eels are

than Leah (Schoenfeld) was (as a senior),” the coach predicted. “And Kim Black maybe, but she’s got farther to go right now.” As for who swims where, that will vary from meet to meet, depending upon the competition, the point of the season and even what Bretscher is looking to strengthen. “I didn’t decide our sectional lineup until the day I had to mail the sectional entry in and that’s from moving people around from event to event,” Bretscher said of the season-long experiment. SOUTHMONT AND SOUTH Vermillion are two improved sectional opponents. “Southmont’s got a freshman that might

3-1, after the 15-3,15-3 victory over North Putnam. North Putnam will host Rosedale Thursday in a 6:30 p.m. varsity-junior varsity match. •** NORTH PUTNAM had 40 girls come out for volleyball according to coach Price and because of the large freshman turnout a separate schedule has been created, including a tournament Sept. 9. The “Cougar Invitational” will include freshman teams from Rosedale, South Putnam and Cloverdale. North plays Rosedale at 5:30 p.m. with South Putnam meeting Cloverdale at 6 p.m. The two firstround losers play at 7 p.m. consolation match with a championship game set for 8 p.m. Freshman matches will be played prior to the junior varsity matches at Cloverdale, Greencastle and South Putnam.

win the state in a couple of events,” Bretscher said of Erika Cottrell. South Vermillion got one of last year’s state finalists when they hired a new superintendent. Greencastle opens at Terre Haute North Sept, ll and will get a first-hand look at Southmont Sept. 17 at McAnally Pool. That home opener could bfrthe biggest single meet of the regular season. It starts at 6:30 p.m. Also, the Tiger Sharks will host the WCC Invitational again this year on Oct. 12. Unofficially, South Putnam, Cascade, Danville and Tri-West will be the other four teams.

in 20:55. Also among the top 10 for the Clovers was Jeff Mannan in ninth place with a 19:46 and Brian Allee finished 16th. It was the first meet ever for Mannan and Allee. Eminence’s Wilson won the meet with a 17: 59 time, followed by Pierce at 18:
