BC knows BYU no passing fancy
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - One down and two to go for Brigham Young. The team the critics said beat 13 nobodies last year en route to college football’s national championship is off and running sorry, passing again in 1985. Having disposed of Boston College, last year’s No. 5 team, 28-14 in Thursday night’s Kickoff Classic, the Cougars next face two traditional powers UCLA on Sept. 7, Washington the following week. They finished ninth and second, respectively, in last year’s rankings and were 20th and 12th in this year’s preseason Associated Press poll. If BYU goes 3-0, it may even dispel some of the leftover criticism. “I don’t think you ever silence all of the critics,” said split end Glen Kozlowski, who fought off leg cramps and caught 10 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown. “I think we gained some respect here. Our goal is to go undefeated again.” Brigham Young has won seven national team passing titles in LaVell Edwards’ 13 years as head coach and the Cougars got off to a flying start as Robbie Bosco completed 35 of 53 attempts for 508 yards all personal highs and three touchdowns. Bosco’s experience was evident as he outperformed BC’s Shawn Halloran, who has the unenviable task of trying to fill the shoes of Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie, major-college football’s career passing king. “Nobody has thrown like them ever,”

said B.C Coach Jack Bicknell, whose own teams are known for throwing the football. “They make a living throwing.” BYU threw every conceivable kind of pass against the Eagles screen passes, swing passes, curls, out patterns, post patterns, fly patterns, dump-offs. They even aired it out a few times, with Kozlowski catching passes of 30, 23,40 and 51 yards to set up the first three touchdowns. For good measure, he grabbed a 22-yard scoring pass with 8:32 remaining that sealed the Cougars’ 25th consecutive victory, the nation’s longest winning streak. Bosco said that “all I have to do is get the ball near Glen and he’s going to catch it. We usually have two options off each play, and if they aren’t open I’ll just drop it off to a running back. I didn’t think they were respecting our receivers deep and we took advantage of that.” Halloran, who spent the last two seasons backing up Flutie, finished with 18 completions in 37 attempts for 165 yards, with three interceptions. The opening weekend of the season has 10 more games on tap, including the Citadel at No. 17 South Carolina and No. 19 Florida State at Tulane. The rest of the schedule finds Purdue at Pitt, Memphis State at Southwestern Louisiana, Virginia Tech at Cincinnati, Texas-El Paso at Air Force, San Jose State at California, Kansas at Hawaii, Oregon at Washington State and, on Monday night, Alabama at Georgia.

Pass defense worries
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP)-Quar-terback Jim Everett made Purdue a dangerous football team on offense a year ago, but the Boilermakers’ pass defense was the worst in the Big Ten Conference and must show a lot of improvement in 1985, says Coach Leon Burtnett. The return of Everett, along with his top two receivers and the Boilermakers’ top rushers from 1984, keeps the Purdue offense a threat. The return of seven defensive starters including four up front gives Burtnett even more optimism. “The defense has the ability to be a bigplay defense,” he said “They hit hard and run exceptionally well.” Purdue’s defensive returnees include four-year starters Derek Wimberly, Brad Hornor, Don Baldwin and Tony Visco up front, along with All-Big Ten safety Rod Woodson, who will be starting for the third year. The secondary, the weak link last year, “should be vastly improved,” Burtnett said. Returning starters Cris Dishman at cornerback and Kennedy Wilson at strong safety will join Woodson in the backfield.
Indiana really doesn't have that far to go
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana University was winless in football last season, but in Coach Bill Mallory’s estimation, the Hoosiers weren’t that far from respectability. Eight losses were by a total of 49 points, with the worst of those defeats a nine-point margin. Seven of the 11 teams that beat Indiana later appeared in post-season bowl games. Mallory admits Indiana is “coming off what I’d have to term a lousy season,” but he insists he senses “a positive feeling” in the Hoosier camp.

Purdue was the surprise team of the Big Ten last year, improving from 3-8 and 3-7-1 in Burtnett’s first two seasons as coach to 7-5, including 6-3 and a second-place tie in the conference. The bulk of the success, Burtnett says, must be attributed to Everett, who had been a backup throughout his college career. As a first-year starter, the 6-foot-5 Everett hit 58 percent of his passes for 3,256 yards and 18 touchdowns last year. Steve Griffin, his wide receiver, caught 64 passes for 1,060 yards and five touchdowns, and Marty Scott, the tight end, snared 46 passes for 596 yards and three TDs. “There are two positions that catch heat quarterback and head coach,” he said. “Leadership is where Jim is really strong. The guys have confidence in him. I see the same confidence in him the players had with (former quarterback) Mark Herrmann. If we were only one or two touchdowns behind, they looked to him to bring us back. "Consistency has been Jim’s biggest improvement. And he has a tremendous ad-
He bases his optimism on the return of quarterback Steve Bradley, already the school’s career passing and total offense leader, and the importation of a flock of junior college transfers to supply quick help for a still-young squad. “I don’t think we’re that far out of the picture. We’re in the ball park,” said Mallory, who last season became Indiana’s third coach in as many years. “The last two years (after the departures of former coaches Lee Corso and Sam Wyche), recruiting was bound to have fallen off. That’s why we went out and got

vantage. He has been a starter for only two years one in high school and one for us his football is all ahead of him.” Burtnett, who got a contract extension and was named conference coach of the year, says, “The pressure is still on us to win. Every coach puts pressure on himself for the kids. You feel obligated to them to keep winning. “When you’re an underdog in nine of 12 games and you win seven of them, you’ve had to have sneaked up on some of them. A lot of those teams would like to get back at us this year,” said Burtnett. The Boilermakers open their season on Saturday at Pittsburgh. The Purdue running game again will be led by Ray Wallace and Rodney Carter, who combined for more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns a year ago. “The only question on offense is the line, where we lost four of five starters. We have quality people, but they just lack experience,” said Burtnett. “Our skilled positions are in excellent shape, but the success of our offense will depend on the development of the line.”
some J.C.s to give us more maturity. We’ll have 10 seniors and 14 juniors, and the senior class would be nothing if I didn’t have some fifth-year holdovers.” The biggest Indiana weakness last season was running the ball, averaging less than 80 yards a game on the ground. The top rusher, Bobby Howard, netted only 268 yards for the season. Mallory brought in tailbacks Damon Sweazy from Fullerton Junior College and Spud Washinton from Merritt Junior College, both in California, in hopes of improving the attack. “Last year, we really suffered with the running game. It just stunk,” Mallory said. “And that really hurt the passing game. One of the big emphases in recruiting was running. If we get more balance, we can be more productive.” Bradley’s passing undoubtedly is

Jaworski old self on field PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Ron Jaworski and new owner Norman Braman exchanged some testy words this week. But it didn’t affect the quarterback’s performance on the field The 34-year-old Jaworski threw for 150 yards and directed three scoring drives as the Eagles beat the Detroit Lions 20-16 in a National Football League exhibition game Thursday night. It was the third victory in four preseason games for the Eagles, who open the regular season Sept. 8 against the New York Giants in East Rutherford, N.J. Jaworski said earlier in the week that the Eagles wouldn’t be a playoff contender unless contract settlements are reached with four veterans who are holding out. Jaworski also criticized Braman, who bought the team last spring for a reported $65 million, for not keeping in closer touch with the team Before Thursday night’s game, Braman said Jaworski should “put more points on the board. That’s his job.” Jaworski, who completed 13 of 25 passes against the Lions, apologized after the game for his remarks about the owner. “I made an irresponsible statement and I apologized to Mr. Braman, coach (Marion) Campbell and my teammates for making it,” he said. “It’s a shame that what should have been an exciting game was tarnished by one statement that I made.” The Eagles, 28th in the league last year running the ball, gained 106 yards against Detroit, with Mike Haddix getting 54 yards on 15 carries and Hubie Oliver 48 yards on 13 attempts. The final preseason weekend features four teams looking to win for the first time. The Los Angeles Raiders, 0-3, play the 2-1 Browns tonight in Cleveland while the 0-3 Chicago Bears host the 0-2-1 Buffalo Bills on Saturday night. The New York Jets, 0-3, visit the 1-2 Packers Saturday night in Green Bay. Tonight, the New York Giants look for their fifth consecutive preaseason victory at Pittsburgh against the 1-2 Steelers. Ironically, the only other unbeaten teams are rivals of the Giants in the NFC East Dallas and Washington. The Redskins, 3-0, travel to Tampa Bay tonight to play the 1-2 Bucs while the Cowboys, also 3-0, host the 1-3 Houston Oilers. In other games tonight, the 2-1 Miami Dolphins are at Atlanta to meet the 1-2 Falcons, the 1-2 Cincinnati Bengals travel to Indianapolis to take on the 2-1 Colts, the 2-1 Minnesota Vikings invade Denver to meet the 2-1 Broncos, the 2-1 San Francisco 49ers are in Seattle to play the 2-1 Seahawks and the 1-2 New Orleans Saints go to San Diego to lock horns with the 1-2 Chargers. The preseason ends Saturday night when the 2-1 St. Louis Cardinals tackle the 2-1 Chiefs in Kansas City and the 1-2 New England Patriots play the 2-1 Los Angeles Rams in Anaheim.
Mallory’s strong suit. The 6-foot-3 senior, going into this third year as a starter, already owns Indiana career records for passing yards (4,842), passes completed and attempted (390-757) and total offense (4,967). He set five season passing records last year, including yards (2,544) and touchdowns (14). His top receiver last year, Len Kenebrew, is gone, but Bradley’s main arget this season should be sophomore Ernie Jones, the only freshman starter last year, who finished with 26 catches for 408 yards. “The defense saw an improvement, but it still is not where it has to be,” said Mallory. “We have some concerns there, because we lost some key people.” The Hoosiers lost six defensive starters, including All-Big Ten linebacker Joe Fitzgerald.
