Hints from Heloise: Jar with tight-fitting lid keeps onion odor in its place

DEAR HELOISE: This is my favorite household hint. Whenever 1 have leftover fresh onion, I put it in a clean dry glass jar, cover it with a tight-fitting lid and put it in the refrigerator. It stays fresh for days. Other foods are protected from the odor of the onion and there is no onion odor in my refrigerator. I save leftover green pepper like this too. Catherine Holland * * * You will save yourself from the problem of “Ooh, it smells like onion, but It’s pudding!” Heloise CHALK PAINTING Dear Heloise: The other day my three-year-old daughter ran out of fun things to do. While rummaging around in the bottom of her toy box I found several pieces of colored chalk. 1 crushed them into a powder and put each color into a separate bowl. I added a few drops of water and stirred until the chalk was dissolved. It made terrific finger paint. Leah Schwindel NO-SPILL MILK Dear Heloise: If you have a small child who always spills milk, try this: Take a small plastic margarine bowl or yogurt cup with a tight fitting lid. Punch a hole in the lid big enough for a straw and presto! A lot more fun and a lot less mess. Hallis McCarthy NOT SO HUMDRUM Dear Heloise: When my husband put the water in the ice trays he always spilled it on the floor. I read in your column that this wouldn’t happen if you hum while carrying the trays to the freezer. We laughed but tried it and it really works. Sometimes when I used to make a pumpkin or custard pie I spilled some of the filling in the oven, so now 1 hum. No more spilled pie! Iris Beihl * * * It does sound silly but it does work! Heloise NAPKIN HOLDER Dear Heloise. I got a great idea on how to use my mom's empty paper towel roll. I cut it up into one-inch pieces and then covered each piece with construction paper. Surprise! It makes great napkin holders. Anne Reid PUTTING IN A HEM Dear Heloise: While on vacation in Florida I was visited by a friend who had purchased a new dress which needed to be shortened. She put on a dress that was the length she wanted and I took a drain plunger and marked the hem length on the handle of the plunger. We used this as the guide to hem up her new dress. The large rubber plunger stood firm and it worked very well. Ella Newhouse MARINATED BROCCOLI Dear Heloise: I read your column every day and enjoy it very much. Do you have a recipe for marinated broccoli spears? They are delicious. I would really appreciate your help in locating a recipe. E.C.P. * * * This is a wonderful recipe that many readers have sent in. It’s not only delicious but low in calories. Mix together one tablespoon each of rice vinegar and sesame oil and one teaspoon each of soy sauce and prepared mustard. Use fresh broccoli or a 10-ounce package of frozen broccoli spears, steamed until crisp and then drained. Toss to coat evenly, chill until serving time. Heloise * * * DEAR HELOISE: I can’t get stains off my laminated plastic counter top. Please help! Olive Dugas ★ * ★ Try using white toothpaste or a paste of baking soda and water. Rub this over the stains with a damp cloth or sponge, then rinse off. Never try to remove stains with an abrasive cleanser. If some stains remain, put a very weak solution of bleach on the stain. Leave it on for about a minute, then wipe it off and rinse thoroughly. (Caution: Overly strong solutions of bleach can
