Dear Abby: Suicide attempts signal trouble ahead for victim
DEAR ABBY You frequently deal with many subjects that are socially taboo. May 1 bring to your attention one that is rarely mentioned: attempted suicide. For every successful suicide there are three to five failed attempts. Studies reveal that a person who makes one attempt is 10 times more likely than the average person to end up as a suicide statistic. Adolescents and young adults are attempting suicide in alarming numbers. An attempt to destroy oneself is a desperate cry for help, an angry attempt to punish someone, or an effort to deal with feelings of intense pain, hopelessness, frustration and depression. Some teen-agers who try to kill themselves have fantasies of being “reborn,” denying the finality of death. Many expect to be rescued. But tragically, when they are rescued after a long delay, they suffer from oxygen deprivation and/or the toxic effects of an overdose, leaving the would-be suicide with irreversible
Heloise: Blinds need to be cleaned one slat at a time
DEAR HELOISE: What is the best and easiest way to wash mini-blinds? I have five (6-foot wide) blinds. They will not fit in the tub. I always dread cleaning them because of this problem. Help! There are a lot of mini-blind owners who would like some information. A Reader * it * There is no easy way that I know of to clean mini-blinds. The best way is to clean each slat individually. I’d be afraid to put them into the tub because they are so much more delicate than the old blinds and can bend very easily. They also may scratch the tub. I have mini-blinds and I vacuum all the dust off first. To clean them, I make a weak solution of warm water and sudsless ammonia. (Follow the directions on the ammonia bottle.) The

brain, heart, kidney or liver damage. Unfortunately, many first attempts are not taken seriously, and the underlying problem surfaces again to end with tragic consequences for victims and survivors alike. Abby, please print this and sign me ... A CONCERNED PROFESSIONAL DEAR CONCERNED: If attempted suicide is a part of an ongoing dialogue, then a successful suicide is a final message to which there can be no reply. Parents, teachers and friends of teen-agers should be alert to the cry for help in any attempt at suicide, and do everything possible to respond to that message. Trained counselors are as close as your telephone. Ask the operator for the nearest suicide hotline. Somebody will listen because somebody cares.
ammonia really removes any grease. I put on rubber gloves, then put an old sock on each hand. I dip the sock in the cleaning solution a bit and wipe each slat. Rinse them with clear water and dry. It takes time but they come out like new. Heloise ELECTRICAL WARNING Dear Heloise: 1 want to use your column to warn readers of a potential danger with an electrical circuit breaker box. We had an overload at a receptacle in a bedroom and our circuit breaker didn’t trip. Why? Because our box is in the basement and the breaker had rust on it. In the few minutes of the overload fortunately a family member was near the main box, heard the noise and threw the main circuit off it burned wiring and insulation in our walls. A few more minutes and our home would have been on fire.
DEAR ABBY: Recently my hus band and 1 had dinner at a very nice restaurant. When we gave the waitress the order for our appetizers, she said, “You got it, you guys!” After the dinner order was given, she said the same thing. After we ordered coffee, she said again, “You got it, you guys!” This went on through the whole dinner. We are not oldsters, but we would have appreciated more respect than “you guys.” She was a good waitress. We didn’t want to report her to the manager. What would you have done? CUSTOMERS, NOT “GUYS” DEAR CUSTOMERS: A friendly, tactful word of caution to the waitress would have been an act of kindness. The next customers she “you guys” may report her to the manager, costing her her job. I probably wouldn’t have tipped her off (nun uninten-
Now once a month or so we trip each breaker individually Please warn people who have circuit breakers to be aware of this situation R.S. * * ★ A good safety hint. I wonder how many people even know where the circuit breaker is. Heloise SPROUTY POTATOES Dear Heloise: When potatoes begin to get wrinkly or sprouty (or both!), peel and dice them, and cook until done. Pack in a 10-inch skillet lined with enough aluminum foil to come up the sides and cover the potatoes. Repeat until you have all the potatoes in nice disks that will fit your skillet, label and freeze them Now you have the beginning of hashed brown potatoes or regular hash with meat and onions. For best results, put a little oil with the butter or oleo in the skillet when frying. On a busy day these disks can be the start of creamed potatoes with parsley, dill, mint or cheese topping They can be used for potato salad.

His mother packs his lunch every day, does his laundry and cuts his hair. He says he never invites a young lady out until he introduces her to his “Mum.” Abby, he likes the way he lives, hut is it healthy for a grown man to depend on his mother so much? potato pancakes, lyonnaise potatoes, or potato soup. Laura Clark * * * That’s a handy idea. Most people just throw away wrinkly or sprouty potatoes. Thank you from all of us potato lovers. Heloise REMOVE CHICKEN SKIN Dear Heloise: I have found many helpful hints in your column, so it’s time to send in one 1 have found helpful hut have not seen in print. The many diet-conscious people need all the help they can get to cut calories. I use a fish skinner, a pliers-like tool to remove the skin from chicken It has a good grip and works fast. So ladies, raid your fisherman's tackle box and come up with a real gem. Works equally well on chicken and small fish. Hawkeye
