have a good time without getting loaded. ’ ’ Responses from the participating teens included several methods. SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) days at school, alcohol-free parties and school-wide demonstrations were suggested. “First, you have to show your friends how to have a good time without drinking,” Goldsmith contended. “Then, you have to find out how to communicate with students.” GOLDSMITH SAID students should consider whose conduct they are trying to affect during their anti-drunk driving campaigns. “Try to build up a core of messages, then come with an idea that will cause a lot of commotion,” Goldsmith suggested. Fair queen
She is also the 1985 Tri-County Fair Queen. “I’ve been active with the fair since I can remember,” Miss Baird related. “I’ve been involved with almost all of the activities behind the scene. I just feel like this opportunity (the fair queen contest) could be the icing on the cake.” In addition to her parents, the Baird family consists of siblings Stacey, 13, and Beau, 4. Miss Baird draws support from her parents and family and notes they have been a positive influence in her life. “MY FAMILY HAS probably had the most influence on me,” she said, “especially my parents. They have always been extremely supportive. They have helped me to develop the knowledge to do the right thing, and to follow the right channels to be able to do the things I want to do.” One of the channels she will eventually pursue is that of attending college, preferably Purdue University, she says. There she intends to major in biology and to aim at a career as a pediatrician. “I love children,” Miss Baird said of the reason for leaning toward the pediatrics profession, “and I wanted to do something in medical science. That is an ever-changing area,” she said. “I like a profession that will be something that is exciting, changes

more peer pressure against drunk driving than there is now on promoting drinking and driving.” Goldsmith said efforts in recent vears to bring the drunk driving problem out in the spot light have made solutions more acceptable. “Ten years ago, you couldn’t stand up at an assembly and tell people not to drink and drive,” Goldsmith offered. “If you did, you would be out of the school the next morning.” THE DANGER TODAY and the challenge before the Teen Institute is to keep the movement alive. “You did so much the first year,” the prosecutor concluded “Just don’t look back and slack off.”

everyday and that is not routine.’" Miss Baird’s experiences in life so far have not been limited to the U.S. Her term as a foreign exchange student, by traveling to Belgium, opened her eyes to other opportunities. “THAT HELPED TO give me a varied background,” Miss Baird notes of the Belgium trip. “It has opened a lot of doors and has caused me to see things differently and in a different respect that I used to. The lifestyle is really different.” But Miss Baird seems most content in the states and is looking forward to this year’s queen pageant. Asked what traits the queen should possess, Miss Baird responded, “She should have a positive attitude, smile and be friendly. “To me, the Putnam County fair is one of the best because there seems to be more enthusiasm and participation here than at other county fairs,” Miss Baird assesses. “I think the attitude here about our fair is very positive.” THAT POSITIVE attitude is one that Miss Baird also generates, saying people should not limit themselves. “I think I would tell people to try to do everything they possibly can,” she says. “You should try to touch all bases because everything you learn will help you in some part of your life.”
