British Open goal for now SANDWICH, England (AP) - Tom Watson acknowledges that one of his records will fall this year, so he has set his sights on a couple of other, perhaps more important, marks. “The long-range goal, of course, is the PGA. That’s the one I haven’t won,” Watson said. “On an overall basis, that’s my principal target. And it will continue to be my principal target until I win it. “But that’s down the road, a month away. “Right now, more immediately, my goal is winning the British Open,” Watson said after completing preparation for today’s first round of the 114th renewal of golf’s oldest championship. Watson’s target of the PGA involves the career sweep of golf’s Big Four titles. Only Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen and Gary Player have won them all. Watson, who has won one U.S. Open and two Masters, lacks only the PGA to gain membership in golf’s most exclusive club. One record he holds, the single-season earnings mark of $530,808, almost certainly will be broken this year. Curtis Strange is less than $5,000 off that figure and plans an extensive schedule later this season. “With the increase in purses, you knew it was just a matter of time before someone broke it,” Watson said. The British Open has been the cornerstone to Watson’s domination of world golf over the past decade. He's won it five times. Only four other men Harry Vardon, James Braid, J.H. Taylor and Peter Thomson have that many, and only Vardon, with six, has won more. Watson, armed with a different putter and a different putting stance, hopes to equal Vardon’s mark this week on the links of the Royal St. George’s Golf Club,

Bears are in heavy negotiations

CHICAGO (AP) With rookie training camp right around the comer, contract talks between the Chicago Bears and their top draft choice, William “The Refrigerator” Perry, appear to be icy. Perry is a defensive tackle in the 320pound range known for eating binges, and the Bears want to base pari of the contract on a “conditioning clause,” which would pay him according to his physical condition, endurance, strength and percentage of body fat. The disagreement is over how much of Perry’s money is to be conditional on the lineman’s physical shape. Perry’s agent, Jim Steiner, says it’s "doubtful’’ Perry will be signed by next Monday, when rookie orientation training camp begins Players cannot participate in the training camp, held in Platteville, Wis., without a contract. But, Bears spokesman Bryan Harlan says “We’re expecting him to show up Monday.” Steiner and the Bears met Monday.

“Both parties have indicated there’s progress,” Harlan said. But Steiner said there’s been no movement in the talks. The Bears reportedly have offered Perry, a defensive tackle from Clemson, $1.3 million for four years. Steiner is pushing for a deal between that and the $2 million-plus deal linebacker Wilber Marshall received when he was the Bears’ No. 1 pick in 1984.

Connors can still grind it out

WASHINGTON (AP) - On a day when future stars pushed their way past five seeded players in the $200,000 D.C. National Bank Tennis Classic, old workhorse Jimmy Connors held off the the hands of time again. “Don’t rush me out of the game. I still enjoy playing and beating the under-35 set,” Connors said after a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sweden’s Stefan Eriksson on Wednesday. “Listen, I won’t hang around to be a fir-

He says contract conditions are appropriate for Perry, who weighed more than 350 pounds in February and was down below 320 in May. “There is not a current contract in the NFL that is structured like William Perry’s,” his agent said. “He’s willing to put some clauses in that are based on his conditioning.... “But if he’s willing to put in some different clauses, he should be able to get some different rewards.

st-round casualty nine of 10 weeks. I’ll know when I can’t grind out a match like I did today,” said Connors, who will be 33 next month. Connors, the top seed in Washington, is ranked fourth in the world, his lowest international standing in 11 years. Despite giving away 11 years to Eriksson, Connors ran his younger opponent into the ground to register the straight-set victory.
