Downer Drugs Downer drugs are made into pills, tablets and capsules. Doctors prescribe these drugs to people who are nervous or who cannot sleep. Depressants slow down, or depress the activity of the brain, heart, lungs, nerves and muscles. Depressants especially affect the brain, slowing down the signals it sends to the rest of the body. As a result of this depressed activity, the user may feel calm, less tense or nervous, or the drug may actually put him to sleep. But abusing downers can be very dangerous. First of all, while the drugs are in the body you may not be able to control what your body does. You may walk funny and have trouble talking and thinking. Some people become violent when they have too much alcohol. Both alcohol and other downers can cause a 'hangover.' This means you feel sick in your stomach, tired, and have a headache. Taking too many downers causes an overdose. This means that the drug becomes a poison in your body. Many people have died because they took too many downer drugs. When someone takes too many downers he has trouble breathing and becomes sleepy. He can pass out.

If you think someone you know has taken too many downers it is very important that you get help. You should call the fire department paramedics, an ambulance, or the local drug crisis center immediately. Try to keep the person awake, warm and moving until help arives. Downer drugs are dangerous because they are addicting. When a person becomes addicted to a drug, he has used so much of it that he has to take more just to feel normal. Because the addict has to take the drug to feel normal, he has to take even more to get high, and that can lead to an overdose. When an addict stops taking the drug, he feels sick, like he has the flu. This is known as withdrawal. When withdrawing from downers an addict becomes very sick. He can convulse and die. Anyone withdrawing from depressants should go to a hospital or drug treatment center for proper medical help. Downer drugs and alcohol Remember that it is very dangerous to mix any of these drugs with alcohol or other downer drugs. This is very important to remember. When these drugs are taken at the same time they become much stronger than if they were taken alone. This can cause an overdose, even when small amounts of the drug are used.
