Families
Continued from page 1 mittee, also in Manhattan. Their professional expertise has helped them keep their large family going “I think what saved us is that we both work with families," Mrs. Carini Giordano said. "Oh yes!” said 22-year-old Peter Carini. “They ’d always say to us, 'What’s the matter! You’re not talking! You've got to talk 1 " His comment brought a big laugh from the rest of the family seated around the dinner table. Clearly, the children feel that a large family has its advantages. "The good thing is that there’s always somebody around you're never alone,” said 14-year-old Laurie Baldwin. Thad the sense, when I was growing up, that other kids wished they could be in a big family,” said 21-year-old Thea Carini, who has three sisters, three brothers, and two Giordano stepbrothers. “I seem to be much more family-oriented than many of the kids I know.” “I think that growing up in a large family helped us all to become individuals,” she added. "To be recognized, we were all competing with each other. Sometimes that’s bad, but it can also be good.” “For me, the benefits of having a large family have outweighed any disadvantages,” said her mother. “But you sometimes find yourself wondering: ‘Did I have enough to give to all of them when they neededit?”’ The children also mentioned benefits for their parents. "I felt it was really good that my dad found someone to love after the woman he loved had died,” 21-year-old Steven Giordano said. One reason that life in a large family can be enriching is that “children don’t have to get all their emotional needs met by two parents.” Dr. Visher said. "They have more opportunities to find another sibling in the family group to mesh with. Children get so much more experience in interacting and learning to negotiate.” "But sometimes it’s too noisy,” said fl-year-old Justin Isphording. "You need some peace and quiet.”
This man's gags prove to be no small joke
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (API- Don’t feel bad if you can’t remember a joke. Neither can Rex May. But May does have a pretty good excuse. He writes 300 gags a week. Without even knowing it, chances are good you have read or laughed at one of the West Lafayette man’s gags, or one of his guru or king cartoons, within the last month. He sell gags the scripts for cartoon strips to Tom Wilson, who does Ziggy, and Bob Thaves, creator of Frank and Ernest, on a regular basis. May’s cartoons pop up in likely and unlikely places every place from motorcycle magazines to National Review, from Saturday Evening Post to under-the-counter publications like Cavalier, from Good Housekeeping to the National Enquirer. His cartoons, with their simple, direct humor, have even been printed on postcards by John VonErdsmannddorff, the owner of Von’s Bookstore, who is readying them for national distribution as well as selling them at his West Lafayette store. All that in mind, it should come as no real surprise that this industrious post-office-letter-sorter-turned-cartoonist can’t remember every joke he’s every written. Under the pen name of Baloo an old Army nickname he estimates that he has written 100,000 gags since he got the bug when National Lampoon bought some of his work in 1973. About five years ago, he stopped sorting letters permanently to take on the job of being a full-time, print world funnyman. The man who calls himself the K-Mart of cartoons works in jeans and a t-shirt at a cluttered cardtable in the basement of his home. May writes when he’s feeling witty and even when he’s not that’s the mark of a professional, he says, and sometimes the results of those off days surprise even

Musical entertainment highlights Amo Fish Fry
Special to the Banner-Graphic AMO- The Amo Volunteer Fire Department and Amo Baseball Association will serve as co-sponsors of the July 11-13 annual Amo Fish Fry. Amo is located approximately seven miles south of New Winchester in Hendricks County on State Road 75. On Thursday, July 11, country music singer Carl Rose will perform. Friday night’s entertainment will feature Don Whitman’s country music show, along with Jim Shelton’s Pick-A-Pocketshow. COUNTRY MUSIC LOVERS will again be entertained Saturday evening when Jack Overshiner entertains. In addition to the musical entertainment, the fish fry events feature a parade on Saturday. Per-
him. The secret to cartooning lies in the oneliners gags as they’re called in the business. “I can teach anyone to draw as well as I can,” he says. "The humor part is largely inborn.” Cartoonists, he says, have an anarchist outlook. They’re ready to find the weak spots in anything and to poke fun at them. To keep up on events and trends, he reads constantly anything and everything and keeps his ears and eyes tuned to the world around him.

His pay comes in a lot of little checks that add up, he says. Gags sell for anything from $2 to $l5O apiece, depending on the market. Among the top-paying cartoon buyers are National Enquirer, which pays him S3OO a cartoon, and Good Housekeeping, which offers $250 May’s satisfaction level is high: "The one great thing about this business is that if you’re making money you know you're doing something people want. 'Ragtime' featured at ISU
TERRE HAUTE-“Riverboat Ragtime Revue,” a rousing variety show reminiscent of turn-of-the-century Mississippi steamboats, comes to Indiana State University July 16 for a special Convocation Series program. The show at 8 p.m. in Tilson Music Hall, Tirey Memorial Union, will feature the Delta Steamer Jazz Band and the vocals of Beatriz Loo. Fast-moving, toe-tapping and with universal appeal to people of all ages, the performance has been applauded from coast to coast and throughout Canada during the past 14 years. WHAT STARTED AS an incidental din-ner-theater piece by Bill Fegan has evolved into a full-scale production with 10 spearkling solo and ensemble entertainers. The Delta Steamer Jazz Band has been a featured attraction for the past several summers at King’s Dominion Park in Virginia and entertained crowds at the Knoxville World’s Fair in 1982. They have toured extensively throughout the country. Beatriz Loo, billed as "The Songbird of the South,” has made a career of her dynamic singing and dancing while touring with the Riverboat show. She has completed six nationwide tours of the revue, belting out such favorite songs as "Bill Bailey,” "Waiting for the Robert E. Lee,” “Nobody” and “Swanee.” VETERAN ACTOR-DIRECTOR Michael Edwards portrays the wry, whimTHESE TERMITES EAT ANYTHING ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The Formosan termite eats through plaster, mortar, wood preservatives, copper and lead. This Asian breed of termite regularly causes blackouts in Hawaii by eating into power lines. The bug, which originally appeared in the United States in New Orleans, has become a serious problem here and in other Florida cities.

sical Mark Twain in the show. The famous gentleman, who was born in 1835 as Samuel Clemens and cruised the river for a number of years during his youth, is called upon to make humorous comments on the proceedings. Edwards has played hundreds of roles on stage and can be seen soon in the new movie, "What Comes Around,” staring Jerry Reed. He also plays Crystal Gayle’s manager in her latest music video production. Others in the revue are high-kicking dancer Ronn Jones, who joins Miss Loo in many songs and dances. Ragtime pianist Jonathon Swoboda, a graduate in piano from the University of Michigan, will also perform. Swoboda recently won plaudits as musical director for “I Do, I Do” in a six-week run in Montgomery, Ala. The program is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
