Senior focus 93 years and going strong

Some people retire early, like 50 or maybe 60, others work beyond the 65 year mark, but would you believe 93 years young, going on 60? RSVP volunteer Alma Siddal will be 94 in October and going strong. She has been with the program since 1976, almost nine years, and RSVP records show that she has not missed her assignment at Sunset Manor Nursing Home unless the transportation van for some reason was not running. Alma has lived in her home at Van Bibber Lake for the past 14 years and on Tuesdays she comes in and spends most of the day at the nursing home. YOU MIGHT ASK what can she do? Well she not only is in very good health but her eye sight is so good that she occupies her time with mending, calling bingo and making herself generally useful. Before she quit the work-a-day world and moved to Florida with her husband, Alma was a Home Demonstrator for General Electric. She had a fully equiped G. E. mobile kitchen and she traveled to different locations giving cooking instructions. Her neighbors and good friends, the Van Bibbers, take Alma to church twice on Sundays and again Wednesday evenings. They also see that she goes shopping when the need arises. She does a lot of reading and appreciates the fact that the library bookmobile keeps her well supplied with reading material. She leans toward nonfiction books. It was a joy to talk with Alma and the RSVP staff is happy that Goldie Humphrey introduced Alma to RSVP. *** ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS who use their cars to travel to volunteer assignments: Congress has approved an increase in the mileage deduction allowed volunteer drivers by the Internal Revenue Service. The deduction is now 12 cents per mile, from nine cents, and is effective in 1985. This amount is equal to the current variable costs of driving a car, essentially cost of gas and oil, according to the American Automobile Association. Volunteer miles that are not reimbursed from another source can be deducted from your income tax. You might want to keep this in mind and keep a record of your mileage when you file your taxes at the end of this year. **» RSVP’S PRIMARY purpose is to offer volunteer opportunities to persons 60 years old and over. Sound familiar? Yes, but you would be surprised, even after 12 years, that some of the non-profit organizations in Putnam County are not aware of this free service. RSVP offers a variety of assignments to its volunteers. One such service is to stuff envelopes and prepare brochures and advertising for bulk mailing. If your organization has a time-
