Peopie in the news Belafonte fears interest waning NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) Harry Belafonte, who took the first planeload of aid bought with earnings from the hit record “We Are the World” to Ethiopia, said Monday a loss of public interest in the famine affecting much of Africa would be catastrophic. The New York-born singer and other members of the group USA For Africa, which recorded “We Are the World,” said at a news conference that they had plans to keep the drought and famine before the public eye for at least another 18 months. Belafonte was instrumental in enlisting 45 pop stars to record “We Are the World” last Jan. 28 as part of a fundraising effort by the United Support of Artists for Africa. The single, heard on U.S. airwaves all winter and spring, has earned SSO million so far. Summing up a five-day visit to Ethiopia, Belafonte said, “One of the things that all the organizations in the field expressed was a deep concern in the not-too-distant future there may be a dramatic falloff of interest in the whole famine and relief problem.” At the Nairobi news conference with Belafonte, the president of USA For Africa, music promoter Ken Kragen, said: “No matter how many dollars we receive, we are never going to be the prime force to solve the long-term problems and difficulties in Africa. “The theme of our campaign is we’re still some 200 million voices short trading, of course, on the idea that we need the support of all Americans, not just 45 singers.” Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Barbra Streisand, Richard Pryor, and other film stars have expressed interest in fund-raising, said Belafonte, and he said he expected them to become involved soon.

NEW YORK (AP) Brooke Shields wants other young women to take a leaf out of her book when they venture into adulthood. She says she had a hard time leaving home so she’s written a book called “On Your Own” to show others what she learned the hard way. The 220-page book includes health, fitness and beauty tips. But at a news conference on Monday where the book was unveiled, Miss Shields, 20, insisted “it’s not just another pretty book.” In a chapter titled “Boyfriends,” she discusses “Fears, Fantasies ... The Man of My Dreams” and her views on sex in a section subtitled: “What My Virginity Means To Me.”

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) Authorities have decided not to press charges against actor Robert Carradine, 31, who was booked last month for investigation of drunken driving. California Highway Patrol Officer Jay Delaney said Monday that the district attorney’s office decided against filing charges because Carradine’s blood-alcohol level of 0.06 percent was below the 0.10 percent level at which a person is considered legally drunk. Carradine, star of “The Revenge of the Nerds,” and youngest son of veteran character actor John Carradine, was arrested May 16.

BROOKE SHIELDS Teen-age advice

LOS ANGELES (AP) Actor Ed Asner, hoping to avoid “more hate in the world,” declined comment on antisemitic vandalism that occurred at his Studio City apartment while he was out of town for the weekend. A Nazi swastika and a slogan reading “Kill Jews” were spray-painted at the home of the “Lou Grant” and “Mary Tyler Moore” television series star, police said. Several hours later, an anonymous caller told The Associated Press: “This is the National Socialistic Liberation Front. We claim responsibility for the vanadalism and spray-painting of the home of that Jewish communist pig Ed Asner.” “Heil Hitler!” the man added and hung up. A similar call was received by another news service, and the caller threatened to escalate attacks on Asner if the Screen Actors Guild president continues his political activities, said police Sgt. Fred Rembold The actor has been vocal for a number of liberal political causes, including a recent effort to promote food selfsufficiency in Africa, but Mike Mamakos, Asner’s publicist, said Sunday that Asner didn’t wish to comment. “He would like to just let this pass,” Mamakos said. NEW YORK (AP) Celebrities including Tony Randall, Stockard Channing and Vincent Gardenia have pitched in to film public service announcements to remind city residents of the importance of water conservation. In one of the four commercials, Ms. Channing is shown standing outside Central Park holding a non-running garden hose. She reminds viewers: “Don’t use a hose.” Randall implores city dwellers to flush the toilet only when necessary and notes that not flushing saves at least 15 gallons of water. Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Andrew McCarthy said the commercials would air beginning in July and run through September.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. says he is proud to lend his name to the Sammy Davis Jr. National Liver Institute and pledges to do “whatever it takes” to make it a success. “This isn’t a publicity ploy or a gimmick,” Davis said during a news conference Monday at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where the center will be based. Davis said he nearly died almost two years ago because of heavy drinking.
