White House visit reveals parallels
Lakers somewhat like President
By GEORGE VECSEY c. 1985 N.Y. Times News Service WASHINGTON On Sunday, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was not happy to find out the Lakers were not going home right away. His head extending high above the crowd of reporters, he asked a team official, “Aw, man, why not?” “The White House,” the official said. “We’re going to the White House on Monday.” “Oh,” Kareem said, not showing much expression one way or the other. Monday, one day after the 111-100 victory that shook loose the Boston Celtics after eight straight disappointments, and one day before the big civic welcome in Los Angeles, the Lakers made a detour to the White House, to be greeted by President Reagan. After a night of partying in Boston, and pinching themselves to verify that they really had beaten the Celtics in musty, intimidating Boston Garden, they got to spend a few minutes in another garden, the Rose Garden If they had enough time to look around in their 15 minutes, the Lakers might have noticed that there were only a few tea roses in the Rose Garden. But the intimate, well-manicured garden at the west end of the White House is a familiar sight to athletes and those who follow sports. The visit by sports champions is getting to be a regular item on the White House calendar in every season. And the president almost always finds time to call into the locker room of Super Bowl and World Series champions to offer his congratulations.

Laura Ledbetter rapped out two singles and a double to pace Sherm’s seven-hit offense and Cassie Cox added a double. SATURDAY SHERM’S FELL to HBG despite a triple and single from Ledbetter. Sue Renschen, Susan Hunter, Lisa Wood and Cox also added two or more hits to the cause. Tonya Gregory led the HBG attack with a double and Kara Thomas, Karen Emberton. Lisa McCullough, Jamie Mark and Suzanne Beck supported winning pitcher Tina McKinney with two or more hits
American Legion baseball opens season at home Wednesday
The Putnam County American Legion baseball team, sponsored for the third season by the Greencastle and Cloverdale American Legion Posts, will open its season Wednesday night with a 5:30 p.m. game against Crawfordsville at DePauw Unviersity’s Walker Field. This is the first of nine home dates set for Walker Field. Among those dates are home contests with defending state champion Southport (June 26) and a doubleheader with Kokomo (June 29). The Putnam County team travels to Rockville Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader and June 17 goes to Lafayette. DOUG ROSE ANI) Mike Meyer return
The brief ceremony takes only a small bit of time and energy from a president, certainly is more fun than thinking about arms control and tax reform, and opens up a whole venue of happy publicity. Before the ceremony, Pat Riley, the coach, and Abdul-Jabbar were ushered into the Oval Office for a chat. Riley recalled, “I said to Kareem, ‘Can you believe it?’” He said that Abdul-Jabbar had told the president “he wasn’t going to switch his affiliation, but he told the president how he takes yoga classes with the president’s son and daughter.” And Riley, who had broadcast Laker games between his playing and coaching careers, related: “I told the president, ‘From one broadcaster to another, sometimes we turn out all right.’” The president, of course, once served as a sports broadcaster in the Midwest. Apparently, Abdul-Jabbar did not remind the president that they had also had similar vocational experience. AbdulJabbar has appeared in four films: the current “Fletch,” “Airplane,” “The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh” and “A Game of Death,” with the late Bruce Lee. Before his current vocation, Reagan appeared in “Knute Rockne, All American,” “The Winning Team,” “Bedtime for Bonzo” and “King’s Row.” The other party members filed into the Rose Garden. For this important occasion, the team had split, 7-5, between open collars and ties The five with ties were: Abdul-Jabbar, Mitch Kupchak, James Worthy, Ronnie Lester and the longhaired, counterculture figure. bis. The Laker party stood in the muggy sunshine for a few moments until Riley, Ab-dul-Jabbar, Bill Sharman, the team president, and David Stern, the commissioner of the National Basketball Association, joined the ranks. Then came the announcement that seems so mundane on television but produces a slight tingle in person: “Ladies and gentlemen, the president of the United States.” Wearing a tan suit, the president strolled across the lush grass, shook hands with every member of the party, and then spoke into a microphone set for his height. “I thank you all for the greeting,” he told some visitors, “but I assure you the Lakers deserve the applause.” And he told the athletes: “You showed America what pride and guts and determination, combined with talent, can do. It was showtime yesterday at the Boston Garden as you defeated another truly great time. You knew that in Boston it was not going to be a tea party.” Smiling at Abdul-Jabbar, the president said: “I see you compared winning the championship to the Dodgers beating the Yankees in the 1955 World Series. Well, Kareem, I remember that Series, too, and you may be, as they say of me, showing your experience. Yesterday, you showed why you were voted the most valuable player. You may be 38, but you played like 25.” The president also praised Magic Johnson for breaking the record of 60 assists in a 6-game series “by an awesome 24,” and he promised the high-flying Worthy, “If you’re ever looking for a career after
St. John's is latest team leaked out on NIT field
NEW YORK (AP) - The National Invitation Tournament, set to launch its first pre-season meeting this fall, may include the St. John’s Redmen, one of the NCAA tournament’s Final Four in 1985. “We are entertaining the thought very positively,” Lou Carnesecca, coach of St. John’s, said Monday. “It’s a very good idea but we have to go through proper channels.” Earlier this year, the NIT won NCAA approval for a pre-season competition, which will be in addition to its post-season tournament. Louisville, a semifinalist in last spring’s NIT, is also reported to be heading for the fall edition. A tournament spokesman said the field would be announced at a news conference Thursday, and he would make no comment on the teams mentioned. “They didn’t get it from us,” he said of the newspaper reports. The Redmen were beaten in the NCAA semifinals last spring by Georgetown. Louisville was ousted in the NIT semifinals by eventual winner UCLA. Kenny Klein, the sports information director at Louisville, declined comment. Two newspapers have reported either a full or partial list of the participants.

basketball, we have lobbying jobs up on the Hill.” Then the president paused and saluted Kupchak and Rambis, the bruising forwards, adding, “Kurt, not everybody would know what to say when diving out of bounds and suddenly landing in a lady’s lap,” a reference to a play-saving dive Rambis took last Friday in Los Angeles. And the president thanked the players’ wives for their work against drug abuse. These items all smacked of having been culled from newspaper articles and press releases by a diligent staffer, but Reagan read them well and everyone seemed happy Stern thanked Reagan, and noted that “basketball’s purely domestic origins make it America’s game” And AbdulJabbar, Johnson and Riley brought gifts to the president. “I was telling the president I’m not a Republican” Abdul-Jabbar said, “but I am one of his constituents, and we ought to suit him up the right way.” He unfurled a gold and purple Laker game shirt with a No.l on both sides and the name “Reagan” on the back. Johnson presented an autographed ball, and Riley a Laker gold cap and a T-shirt “for back at the ranch.” The president bounced the ball one time on the grass, thanked the players for stooping to the microphone set at his height, and after a few smiles for the camera, he went back to more demanding tasks. As the Lakers walked to their bus, Riley said he was looking forward to the big rallies in Los Angeles Tuesday.

Guokas next candidate
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - With Detroit Pistons Coach Chuck Daly out of the running for the Philadelphia 76ers’ head coaching job, the National Basketball Association club has turned its attention to assistant coach Matt Guokas. The 76ers rejected the Pistons’ demand for a first-round draft pick in exchange for signing Daly, and Sixers owner Harold Katz said Guokas and “possibly one or two more” candidates were under consideration. Guokas’s wife, Barbara, said her husband met with Katz for much of Monday in Katz’s office in suburban Jenkintown, but said she did not know what was being discussed. Numerous

calls to the Guokas home Monday night were met with a busy signal. The head coaching position opened up last month when Billy Cunningham resigned after eight years. Daly has one year left on his threeyear pact with Detroit. “Obviously, I was interested,” Daly said in an interview with ABC Sports from his home in Farmington Hills, Mich. “I know the Philadelphia area extremely well and I like it there. But in this business, you learn to really love where they sign your paycheck, and I like it here.” Daly was once head coach at the University of Pennsylvania and also , was an assistant under Cunningham.

This past season, Jones’ Tigers completed the first undefeated regular season in school history. They lost in the regional finals to Evansville Bosse. Princeton ended the season 23-1. In another coaching change, Larry Hurris was named head basketball coach at Wood Memorial High School.
