People in the news Rivers bites NBC hand that feeds her PHOENIX (AP) - Comedian Joan Rivers, who makes her living insulting celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Oueen Elizabeth, has attacked her own network, saying NB( left her off a list of possible successors to Johnny Carson when he decides to retire from “The Tonight Show.” HOWEVER, BRADON TARTIKOFF, president of NBC Entertainment, said there is no such list. “If there were such a list, Joan Rivers’ name would be the first on it,” he said Monday. Miss Rivers said she had seen an NBC inter-office memo from a network vice president. She did not reveal the executive’s name, but said the list had 10 names, all male, including David Letterman and David Brenner. Miss Rivers made her remarks to television reporters at their annual meeting with TV executives and personalities. Now we know that NBC has no long-range plans for me, she said. “That’s fine. Now we all know where we stand. It s a business. Just don’t ask me to come and entertain at your affiliates meetings anymore.” Ironically, the raspy-voiced comedian has just signed her third one-year contract to be Carson’s only subsitute. during his vacations. She works eight weeks a year, including this week. MISS RIVERS SAID CARSON had nothing to do with the list. I love Johnny,” she said. “I was working seven years in Greenwich Village with people saying ‘No way a woman can say that,’ but Johnny said, ’You’re gonna be a star.’ He’s my mentor.” Earlier this spring, Carson signed a new contract, which runs through 1987 and would give him 25 years as “The Tonight Show” host. Carson is in Europe and unavailable for comment. • LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) Rock singer Joan Jett rushed into the surf at a Long Island beach and pulled out a 3-year-old boy who had fallen in over his head, the boy’s father said. Ms. Jett was at the beach Sunday with friends Jory and Nora Bellsey and their son, Jeb, when the boy fell into a low spot while wading in the surf, according to his father. “Joan saw it and went in the water after him,” said Bellsey, 33, of Long Beach, who runs a supermarket buying office. Ms. Jett, 25, whose hits include “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” and “Gotcha (Where I Want You),” pulled the boy out and put pressure on his stomach to push out the water he had swallowed, Bellsey said. He said the youngster did not actually lose consciousness. • NEW YORK (AP) Robert Kennedy Jr., son of the late Sen. Robert Kennedy whose law career was put on hold after he was arrested on drug charges in 1983, has been admitted by the state Bar Association to practice. Harry Reynolds, chief clerk at the Appellate Division and a former campaign worker for the slain senator, said Monday he gave Kennedy the character and fitness part of the bar exam on May 28, and Kennedy, 31, passed. Kennedy also was not required to appear in court Monday morning with the 180 other attorneys to take an oath, said Reynolds.

JOAN RIVERS Insulted by NBC

LOS ANGELES (AP) From Wille Nelson’s craving for pancakes to Richard Chamberlain’s love for Haagen-Dasz ice cream, no request is too unusual for Steve Michelson, Hollywood’s caterer to the stars. Michelson’s Food Services serves 1,500 to 5,000 meals a day at remote TV and movie locations around the world, including Yugoslavia, Russia and New Zealand, he estimates. Closer to home, his gold and white, kitchen-equipped trucks can be seen on the sets of such shows as “Dallas,” “Remington Steele” and “Hill Street Blues.” Michelson, 33, said his late father, Ed, conceived the mobile catering business in the late 1950 s while selling hot dogs at a Western movie set in the foothills of the San Fernando Valley. • The forthcoming film “9 Vfe Weeks,” which is being directed by Adrian Lyne (“Flashdance”) and began as a Tri-Star project, is currently at MGM-UA and it has been removed from that company’s 1985 release schedule. After Tri-Star experienced “creative differences with the director as to the direction in which the movie should go,” according to Victor Kaufman, Tri-Star’s chairman and chief operating officer, the film moved to Producer’s Sales Organization, which owns the film, and MGM-UA. which will be the distributor. Lyne is re-editing parts of it, but “9 Weeks” remains very sexually suggestive. It reportedly includes one long sequence in which the leading man (Mickey Rourke) coats his paramour (Kim Basinger) with various foods and beverages. The film will presumably require very specialized marketing tactics, but apparently the approach hasn’t been formulated yet. “The whole marketing department thinks this is an exciting project, and we’re really looking forward to having a chance to play with it,” one vice president said. “But for the moment, we’ll just have to wait a beat and see what Adrian comes up with next.” # Clara Bow will be back on the screen when “The It Girl,” a biography by Edward Epstein and Joe Morelia, is filmed by the producer Martin Poll. Epstein maintains she may be back in other ways as well. He cites the “incredible coincidences” of a Bow likeness on the cover of Prince’s new album, a poster of Marilyn Monroe as Bow being sold by American Express, and a statement by Madonna’s manager that his client is the It Girl of the 80s
