People in the news 126 wpm claims fastest typist title BALTIMORE (AP) - The Eighth Annual World’s Fastest Typist Contest was as much a test of nerves as of speed, says this year’s winner, a repeat champion who won using the typewriter that was her prize last year. The contest Friday for 25 women and one man ended five minutes and, for most of the contestants, 600 words after it began. The winner, Linda Williams, a secretary for Chevron in San Francisco, was so nervous that at the bottom of the official contest sheet she put her home address in the space that called for her company’s address. “Nerves took over this year more than last,” she said, although she still managed to break the record of 124 words per minute she set to earn the title last year. The winning score: 126.2 wpm. After errors. “They don’t call this the Olympics of the keyboard for nothing,” said Xerox Marketing Vice President Jere Rowland as he rang a bell to signal the end of the contest. “When he rings the bell, something snaps and you get all jangley. You lose control,” said Irene Niehaus, who runs her own secretarial service in Cincinnati. Ms. Niehaus scored 119 words per minute last year, missing third place by only 1 wpm. A mere 105 wpm netted her fifth this year. • NEW YORK Richard Benjamin’s new “restoration comedy,” as he describes it, is “The Money Pit,” currently shooting at the Astoria Studios in Queens and on the North Shore of Long Island. It’s a romantic comedy about a young couple who “buy a house that nobody should buy,” Benjamin said. “They find a huge old house on Long Island and it looks great, they just can’t pass up this deal,” he said. “Of course, it’s a disaster. It comes down around their ears. I mean it quite literally falls down.” The film stars Shelley Long and Tom Hanks as a couple who have been living together and who think that buying and restoring the house will cement their future (“Nobody can survive restoring a guest bathroom, let alone a whole house,” Benjamin said). And Alexander Godunov plays the former husband who is eager to win back Miss Long. “She doesn’t want to go back to him,” Benjamin explains, “but h ’ lives in a world of clean plates where there’s not a layer of plaster dust on everything, and of course that appeals to her.” • GARDEN CITY, N Y. (AP) - Tom Selleck, star of television’s “Magnum, P. 1.,” made his debut in a U.S. Volleyball Association tournament, leading his team to a pair of wins in the senior men’s division. Selleck, 40, played on the Outrigger Canoe Club team of Honolulu, which defeated Los Gatos, Calif., and First Services of Richmond, Calif., Friday. The team lost in the open division competition to Molten-SSI of Torrance, Calif., defending champion.
Dear Abby Neighbors just partying or breaking the law?
DEAR ABBY: I need your opinion as soon as possible on a rather delicate subject. I am an older widow, living alone in a penthouse apartment. There’s not much to do up here all alone at night, so I sit on my terrace and enjoy the view. Directly across from me is another penthouse in which two young men live together. Quite often I see them having parties with young (perhaps teenage) boys. I see them drinking and smoking, and Lord knows what else is going on over there. On some occasions I see them all in groups—all nude on their private terrace. I wonder if those young men are being raped, or if they’re having sex willingly. Should I call the police? If 1 report them to the police, will I have to give my name? I’m afraid I might be terrorized by these men if thev found out who reported them. ON THE 25th FLOOR DEAR NAMELESS: If you honestly believe that your neighbors are raping minors, you should notify the police and be willing to identify yourself. Be aware that the law states that whatever goes on between consenting adults in the privacy of their own home is not your business—or the law’s. For a woman of your apparent means, you are vadly impov-

Roger Moore is James Bond in the latest 007 adventure, "A View to Kill,” co-starring Tanya Roberts, last seen as "Sheena.” Filmed on location in France, the movie is scheduled to hit the theaters next Friday. It could possibly be Moore's last stint as James Bond. (AP Wirephoto). “A View to a Kill,” the new James Bond film with Roger Moore that opens next Friday, comes equipped with a disclaimer stating that no resemblance to any person or corporation has been intended. That’s because the film’s villain is Max Zorin, an evil blond tycoon (played by Christopher Walken) who hopes to rule the world. MGM-UA employees were told by memo that a company called Zoran did exist, but that its activities were “far removed from fantasy technology or world domination.” So the character, who manufactures microchips and raises thoroughbreds, can’t be modeled on the fashion designer Zoran, whose corporation is called Zoran Ladicorbic Ltd. can it? “It’s too soon to say,” said David Englander, Zoran’s counsel. “I’ll have to check with my client as to his extracurricular activities.” • Harrison Ford, the star of “Witness,” the film that opened the Cannes Film Festival handled his share of arcane questions. For example, since the robot in his film “Blade Runner” and the Amish woman in “Witness” have the same name Rachel he was asked whether a statement was being made about characters on the opposite edges of society? Looking momentarily helpless at the necessity of explaining the relationships of movies that are not related, Ford settled for, “The only similarity is that I have the same haircut in both movies.” A few questions later, Ford was asked about the significance of his haircut.
erished. Enrich your life with friends—or a hobby. * * * DEAR ABBY: What happens to a patient’s files and medical records after the physician (or psychiatrist) retires, dies, or the patient decides to change doctors? I have seen both kinds of doctors, and I do not want my medical history read by anyone other than the doctors who have treated me. It’s bad enough to know that the doctors’ nurses, bookkeepers and receptionists who had access to my files might have opened their mouths at a party. CONCERNED IN CALIFORNIA DEAR CONCERNED: In California the patient’s medical records are the property of the doctor. In almost every case, if the patient changes doctors, the “old” doctor willingly sends the patient’s records to the “new” doctor, but no doctor is legally bound to relinquish a patient’s records on demand. The laws vary from state to state, but in all states, if a doctor believes that it would not be in the best interest of the patient to see his or her records, the doctor will not release them.

DEAR ABBY: Nothing in this world seems to interest me anymore since I broke up with my fiancee. I was so upset at the time, I wanted to commit suicide, but because I have my parents to support, I couldn’t bring myself to end my life. I cannot seem to get over the hurt of ending my relationship with what I perceived to be the perfect woman. We were so happy together and she seemed so right for me, then shortly before we were to be married I discovered that she had been a prostitute before we met. Please advise me. NOT HEALING DEAR NOT HEALING: It’s not where we came from that’s important—it’s where we’re going that counts. Jesus forgave the prostitute. (“Go, and sin no more.”) Should you do less? * * * (Getting married? Send for Abby’s new, updated, expanded booklet, “How to Have a Lovely Wedding.” Send your name and address clearly printed with a check or money order for $2.50 and a long, stamped (39 cents) envelope to: Dear Abby, Wedding Booklet, P.O. Box 38923, Hollywood, Calif. 90038.)
