Villeneuve could lose ride in 500

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Johnny Parsons, hired to be the troubleshooter on rookie Jacques Villeneuve’s car, says he’d like to try to put the Cosworth powered March in the field for the May 26 Indianapolis 500. Parsons practiced in the car assigned to Villeneuve Tuesday, recording a quick lap of 203.942. “All I know is I’ve been employed to help them get the car up to speed,” said Parsons, a veteran of nine Indianapolis starts who does not have a ride in this year’s race. “I was hired just to help get it going, but obviously I’d like to race it,” he said. “We’ll just have to wait and see.” Villeneuve, a former Can-Am champion from Canada, qualified for last year’s race at more than 200 mph but did not run because he was injured in a crash during practice. He has crashed twice in practice this month. Villeneuve had his original car up over 203, but has been unable to get back up to that speed in his backup since crashing the main car on May 8, the second time in less than one week. Crew chief Larry Curry said car owner David Billis and Villeneuve supported the decision to let Parsons test the car. “I called the owner and told him what had taken place,” said Curry. “He sounded very satisfied with what he heard and a decision (on who will drive the car) will be forthcoming today.” Curry said Villeneuve “said I should get a second opinion and he approved putting someone else in the car.” “He had two bad experiences in a short period of time and was a little confused,” Curry said of Villeneuve. “He didn’t know if he could provide us with data right or wrong.” In other action Tuesday, Mario Andretti, practicing with a race day setup he hopes can give him his second Indianapolis 500 triumph, recorded the fast lap of 208.865 mph in his Cosworth-powered Lola. Nine drivers already in the 33car field that will start the $3 million race practiced in qualified cars at the 2.5-mile oval. Bobby Rahal was clocked at 206.991. Rookie Ed Pimm and 1983 Indy winner Tom Sneva, teammates in Cosworth-powered

Race car drivers must be athletes

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Driving a race car through turns at speeds above 200 mph is not only hazardous, it is physically demanding. The forces of gravity involved approach those that test pilots and astronauts must endure. And driving a race car at high speed in traffic for 500 miles takes extraordinary concentration and stamina. Still, few people think of race drivers as athletes. One dictionary defines athlete as: “One trained to physical excercises, feats or contests of strength.” A good case can be made for drivers on each of those points. To wrestle an ill-handling race car, whether it is a 1,550pound Indy car or a 3,700-pound stock car, around a race track definitely is physical excercise, and it certainly takes above average strength. And piloting a race car at the speeds they reach today on racetracks built before World War I must be considered a feat. “Driving keeps you in shape,” said Bobby Rahal, who has had a seat in virtually every major driving series in the world. “But you have to have tremendous stamina. It’s like a marathon runner You have to be physically strong. "The other thing is mental ability - the ability to concentrate. That’s very difficult to train for. “What’s the definition of an athlete? Is a jockey an athlete'’ We don’t go running up and

JOHNNY PARSONS Finds more speed Eagles, shared practice time in Pimm’s car. Pimm, the 1983 Super Vee champion, edged his teammate on the speed list, hitting 205.526, while Sneva had a 205.479 lap. Four-time Indy champion A.J.Foyt, who qualified for his 28th consecutive start Saturday, drove three different cars during the day. His top speed was 203.889 in a non-qualified March powered by a Chevy V 6 engine. He also recorded a 203.389 in the March-Cosworth he already has put into the field and spent some time setting up another March-Cosworth along with rookie Mike Nish. Kevin Cogan, Pete Halsmer and Michael Andretti were other drivers testing qualified cars. The younger Andretti, corookie of the year here last year, had a 204.918 top lap, while Cogan was clocked at 200.624 and Halsmer hit 199.379. Drivers still seeking to join the field who practiced included Raul Boesel of Brazil, Dennis Firestone, Nish, Tom Bigelow, Phil Krueger and Johnny Parsons Jr. Boesel had a 204.081 clocking in a car owned by veteran driver Dick Simon, who also took the car out and had a fast lap of 206.017. A 1 Unser Jr., already qualified in his No. 1 car, went out in his backup car and had a lap at 207.277 second quickest of the day. Nish began the final phase of his rookie test, a requirement he must complete this week to have a chance to qualify in one of Foyt’s entries. But he had mechanical problems and was unable to complete the test Tuesday. Defending champion Rick Mears practiced in his backup car and had a fast lap of 206.442. Teammate Danny Sullivan also practice in the backup and hit 203.942.

down like a football or basketball player, but in terms of the physical demands of our sport, it takes every bit as much athletic ability, in my opinion.” Rahal, 32, rides a stationary bike for about half an hour a day and also works out with Nautilus weight equipment a favorite of many of the drivers. Danny Sullivan, a slim, handsome 35, has taken a further step to stay in proper condition for driving a race car. He has hired a personal fitness consultant and trainer, Dan Isaacson, who is a partner in John Travolta Dance and Workout in Los Angeles, trained Travolta for his demanding role in the movie “Staying Alive”. “Danny works out at least an hour a day six days a week,” said Isaacson, who spent the first week of practice for the May 26 Indianapolis 500 at Sullivan’s side. “I don’t usually do this (travel with his clients), but this is so unique and such a major event, I wanted to see what it is we had to deal with. “What we’re trying to do for Danny is make him more conscious of his whole body. His workouts and diet are designed to give him an improved cardiovascular system get more oxygen to his system when he needs it and make him more flexible.” Isaacson, a compact, muscular man of 35, said now that he has seen race drivers up close, he certainly considers them athletes.
