South Putnam wins county title

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor First place may have been the goal, but it wasn’t the only route to the Putnam County Boys Track and Field Meet championship. Despite Greencastle’s seven individual firsts, South Putnam won the championship Tuesday afternoon at DePauw University’s Blackstock Stadium, John Bridgewater securing the title by pole vaulting 12 feet in the final event of the day. CAPTURING A TOTAL of 26Vi places, South Putnam scored 85*/i points to edge Greencastle with 82>4 points from 21V 2 places. Cloverdale finished third with 38 '/ 2 points from Wfa places and North Putnam fourth with 25Vfe points out of 8(£ places. “You can’t put it all on first places, second places or third places,” Greencastle coach Charlie Dobson said. “Every point is important when you get down to three points in a meet.” And South Putnam got a lot of points out of a lot of different people. In fact, all but one individual scored in the meet, according to coach Wayne Schuetter. “A LOT OF PEOPLE stress track as an individual sport. I do too because you have individual records, we have individual advancement after the sectional and conference champs and all that. But at the same time it’s a team sport. People who may not be the champions can get a good feeling knowing they’ve contributed to a team victory,” Schuetter explained. “That’s a feeling of accomplishment and I think that’s what our team has had and I think that’s what has pulled us to the championship four out of the last five years.” There were no meet records set, but Greencastle did get a school record from double-event winner Robert Sedlack. The senior won the 800-meter run in 1:59.8, breaking the old record of 2:00.0 set in the Patriot relays at Terre Haute North earlier this year. Sedlack also won the 1600 in 4:41.6 with teammate Tom Pearson finishing second. Joe Franklin was the only other doubleevent winner in an unpredictable meet. Franklin won the 100-meter dash in 11.6 seconds for Greencastle and took the 400meter dash in 51.4 seconds. “ANYTIME YOU HAVE a big meet you’re always going to have things happen that you don’t expect, good or bad,” Schuetter said. “We had some bad, they (Greencastle) had some bad. It changes the course of the meet. The key is you’ve got to have more goods and we had a couple I didn’t expect. Just one or two point places.” While Dobson refused to point a finger, the 400-meter relay may have been the difference. Greencastle dropped the baton and South Putnam’s team of Dan Smetzer, Brian Johnston, Jon Bridgewater and Darrin Lewis won the event and the Cubs did not score a point. “We gave it (points) back to them in the quarter,” Schuetter said of the one-two finish Franklin and David Smith pulled off. Smith leaned over the finish line in 52.9

Stoltz hurls Clovers by Eels

CLAY CITY-Sonny Stoltz threw a onehit shutout while being supported by an error-free defense and a 10-hit attack Tuesday as Cloverdale defeated host Clay City 9-0 in a high school baseball game. The victory improved the Clover record to 6-7 going into Thursday’s game at North Putnam. Stoltz struck out 13 and walked six while improving his record to 2-4. The only Clay City hit was a clean-cut single into left field in the fifth inning. But Stoltz was never in trouble. Cloverdale jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first two innings and coach Williams gave his freshmen some playing time over the last three innings. ESSENTIALLY THE CLOVERS wrapped this one up with a five-run second in-

No. 18 Cubs to host Edgewood at DePauw

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Some call it skill. Others call it luck. Whatever it is, maybe a combination of both, the Greencastle High School baseball team has a 14-1 record and No. 18 ranking going into Thursday night’s 4:30 p.m. West Central Conference title game at DePauw Univerty’s Walker Field. That’s right it’s at Walker Field and with Edgewood carrying a 5-1 WCC record this is potentially a championship game. It’s Greencastle’s last league game and all other conference teams have one loss. While the varsity is playing at Walker Field, the junior varsity will play host to Edgewood at the high school, also at 4:30 p.m. AFTER WINNING 14 straight games, Greencastle cracked into the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association top 20 poll. The Tiger Cubs are tied with 12-2 Whiteland for the No. 18 spot, according to

seconds just ahead of South’s Bruce Bridgewater at 53 seconds. SOUTH’S BIGGEST NEGATIVE, but at the same time one of the most courageous performances of the meet, came in the 300meter low hurdles. Top seeded Brian Johnston fell over a hurdle, tumbling head over heels, only to get up and come from behind to finish third. Greencastle’s unexpected positive came from Steve Penley in the long jump. The junior won the event at 18 feet, 9(4 inches, ahead of the top seeded Johnston. The two title contending teams got strong performances in their respective weakest areas. While Jon Hendrich won the discus (129 feet, five inches) as expected, David Pickens took second for the Cubs. And while Karl Klein and Bob Nealon finished first and second in the 3200-meter run, South got not one, but two places in what is considered its weakest event. Bruce Broadstreet took fourth and Pat Thibodeau fifth. WHILE NORTH PUTNAM and Cloverdale were not team-title contenders, each came up with a champion, one of them unexpected. Mike Kersey’s first place in the high jump was no surprise, but the senior cleared only six feet, two inches while going over the bar at 6-4 regularly during the year with a high of 6-6. Mike Kays pulled the biggest surprise of the meet though when he won the 200meter dash. The Cougar turned in a 24.2 seconds time to beat Cloverdale’s Bryan Scott at the wire. SCOTT NOVAK WON what was expected to be one of the meet’s closest event. The junior survived a rough 300meter low hurdle race with a time of 42.2 seconds, equaling his best of the season. “I was real happy with Scott in the 300hurdles. That was a tough race,” coach John Pattison praised. South Putnam, Greencastle and North Putnam get another shot at one another Friday in the West Central Conference Track and Field Championships at Danville High School. Field events begin at 5 p.m., track events at 6 p.m. and finals at 7 p.m.

ning. Mark McLean started the rally with a leadoff double and scored on Chris Hoffa’s single. One out later Stoltz chipped in with an RBI double. A Clay City error and hit batter loaded the bases and Doug Brummett’s ground out scored Stoltz with the third run. Brian Allee capped the rally with a tworun double and the Clovers were 7-0. Troy Holsapple led the Clovers with a double and single, followed by Hoffa with two singles. the poll released Tuesday by Associated Press. Both, however, are well behind No. 1 ranked LaPorte. The 17-2 Lancers are back on top this week after falling behind Evansville Central in last week’s poll. Evansville Central dropped to No. 5, losing two of its three games after climbing to No. 1 and is currently 13-2. Since its season-opening 10-run rule loss to Mooresville, highly ranked during the first few weeks of the season and now out of the top 20, the Tiger Cubs have defeated such traditional powers as Terre Haute North (7-5), 10-4 Terre Haute South (5-4) and Crawfordsville (4-0). GREENCASTLE HAS OUTSCORED its opponents 141-46 during that 14-game streak, averaging just over 10 runs offensively, while allowing just 3.3 runs. Because of the high offensive production, and stingy defense, the Cubs have won approximately half of their games on the 10-

Greencastle keeps county crown

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Greencastle was favored to win the Putnam County Girls Track and Field championship Tuesday at DePauw University’s Blackstock Stadium and did. But some surprising performances turned the meet into a complete rout for the Tiger Cubs. Taking nine of the 13 possible firsts and six of the seconds, Greencastle scored 90 points, 51 more than the 39 scored by second place Cloverdale. South Putnam followed Tina Berry’s two firsts and meet record performance to a third place with 37M> points and North Putnam scored 33‘ 2 points. THE WIDE MARGIN surprised coach Steve Ball. “We were strong this year and the other three county schools were down a little bit. It was one of those years. Clover dale has given us some real trouble in the past,” Ball said after the Cubs’ seventh county title in the meet’s nine-year history. En route to the victory, Greencastle set two of the three meet records broken. Tammy Allee, Kathy Schwartz, Lisa McCabe and Heather Kauble won the 400meter relay in 51.1 seconds to break the previous standard of 52.9 seconds set in 1982 by Cloverdale’s Debbie Taylor, Laura Roach, Shelly Hacker and Lisa Evans. Allee now has the distinction of running on three Putnam County Meet record setting relay teams. In the final event of the meet, Allee joined up with Stephanie Dean,

Prior to Monday’s win, Jon Williams led the Tiger Cub starters with a .422 batting average that included seven home runs and a teamhigh 26 RBl’s. Going from position to position, Mike Cooper has a 6-0 pitching record and is hitting .394 with five doubles and three home runs. Tony Hurst has a 6-1 pitching record and a .258 batting average with three home runs. CATCHER PAT MEYER is batting 306 with 12 RBl’s from his 12 hits. First baseman-designated hitter Jack Bedwell is batting .394 and second baseman and leadoff hitter Ken Tew .341. Karen Napoli and Amy tucker to win the 1600-meter relay in 4:02.6, shattering the old mark of 4:22.7 she, Leann Lemmert, Sharon Powell and Leah Schoenfeld set in 1983. SOUTH S BERRY NOT only walked away from the meet with two firsts and a meet record, but also a school record. The junior ran the 300-meter low hurdles in 47.7 seconds, breaking the meet record she set at 50.9 seconds last year and her own school record. Berry, who also finished second in the long jump, won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.3 seconds. Greencastle got its usual two firsts from Kim Sheldon. The senior cleared five feet, two inches to win the high jump and threw the discus 94 feet, seven inches, winning both without top performances With Sheldon taking firsts the Cubs got a onetwo finish in the high jump, Tawnya Pierce finishing second. Pierce, Kauble and Stephanie Dean also turned firsts. Pierce won the long jump at 15 feet, 9> 4 inches. Kauble sprinted to a first in the 200-meter dash at 27.2 seconds and Dean turned in a 1:01.6 first place time in the 400-meter dash. None of those performances, though steady, were season bests. "WHAT I WAS looking for today was some key performances out of some people we haven’t gotten them from yet. getting prepared for Friday’s (West Central) conference meet and our distance people were people we had to have,” Ball praised.

“All my distance (running) people ran really well today and this is what we have needed from them all season long and finally they came through today.” With Carrie Nealon sidelined for the remainder of the year with a a pulled muscle, Amy Tucker stepped in to run a season and county best 2:35.6 first place time. Her closest competition was teammate Beth Clodfelter in second. ALSO, KAREN NAPOLI turned in a season and county best at 5:48.1 in the 1600meter run. Coach Bill also noted Jodi Gould was under six minutes finishing second. Cloverdale finished second without taking a single first place. South Putnam came close to its pre-meet goal, but... “We had two factors in the meet. First of all we had really spread our people around to see if we could catch Cloverdale for second. That was admittedly our goal,” South coach Kieth Puckett said. “And Colleen Sullivan made a great sacrifice. I think she would have won the half (800meter run), but she sacrificed and ran the mile (1600-meter run) for the team to try to get the points and it cost her in the halfmile It was just something she was willing to give up for the team. It was a gamble we didn’t quite pull off.” NORTH PUTNAM GOT three strong performances from Heidi Blocher, Cindy Fulwider and Sarah Griffin. Blocher put the shot 35 feet, 4‘ 2 inches for a first place and also finished second in the discus.
