People in the news ground for "farm' actresses WASHINGTON (AP) Three actresses who played distressed farm wives are being brought to Capitol Hill by House Democrats in an attempt to revive interest in the farm crisis and the early reviews are mixed. Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek and Jane Fonda are scheduled to testify Monday before the Democratic Party’s House farm task force on the emotional toll of the financial stress experienced by farm families, something akin to their roles in the movies “Country,” “The River” and “The Dollmaker,” respectively. But the session already was provoking some unease on Capitol Hill over the public relations impact of having wealthy actresses represent farmers who are going broke, and whether a publicity stunt might trivialize the very real problems of farmers. Rep. Tony Coelho, a California Democrat who used his show-business connections to help arrange Monday’s events, said, however, that the actresses had every right to testify before Congress on the farm crisis. “They probably have a better understanding of the problems of agriculture than the actor in the White House,” Coelho said. A Republican Agriculture Committee member, Rep. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., questioned the need for such a session and said he feared it might be “counterproductive.” “Apparently we’re going to play ‘Hollywood Squares’ in the Agriculture Committee,” Roberts said. • NEW YORK (AP) Entertainer Steve Allen had a difficult childhood in which his mother, a vaudevillian, repeatedly left him behind as she performed on the road, according to his wife, Jayne Meadows. In an interview published in the May 5 issue of Parade magazine, Miss Meadows said Allen, now 63, came down with pneumonia when he was six months old and his parents were appearing in San Francisco. “Well, they took him to the hospital and never came back until they finished their circuit,” said Miss Meadows. “So when he got well, a nurse took him home to live with her.” Allen’s father died when he was about a year old, and his mother placed him in military schools and orphanages, according to Miss Meadows. Life became unbearable to young Allen when he was 12 or 13 years old, and he ran away, she said. • NEW YORK (AP) Johnny Carson will be around to tuck America in for at least two more years. The late-night host of NBC’s “Tonight Show” has signed a multiyear contract, the network announced Thursday. Financial terms were not disclosed, but a network source said the deal was for two years. Carson’s previous contract was to run out this fall. Carson has ruled the late-night ratings roost since he took over from Jack Paar in 1962. • PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) Actress Brooke Shields hams it up as an artist’s model in her second appearance in the Princeton Triangle Club’s annual musical comedy revue. Miss Shields, a Princeton University sophomore, also hoofs her way through several dance numbers in the show titled, “Number 96 Untitled.”

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) tinues to reap dividends for singer-songwriter Lionel Richie, garnering him the top three awards at the 1984 American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers ceremony. The song got the most radio and TV play of any song last year, beating Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds,” Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon” and Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson’s “Say Say Say,” which placed second, fourth and fifth, respectively. Richie’s “Hello” took third place. The top awards plus those for the writers and publishers of the top 60 songs were distributed at the second annual pop awards dinner Thursday at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Gary Coleman says he had nothing to do with “Diff’rent Strokes” being canceled, but an NBC executive says the decision was made after the youthful cutup announced he was “very serious” about leaving the show. Coleman, 17, admitted Wednesday that he was getting bored with the show and that his continued appearance as a child made possible because congenital kidney problems stunted his growth was demeaning. “I want to say I had nothing at all to do with the decision to cancel,” Coleman said. • PEKING (AP) Boxing great Muhammad Ali will provide ringside coaching and perhaps stage an exhibition bout during a return visit to China this month, officials said Thursday. The former heavyweight champion will visit from May 11 to 22, the state Physical Culture and Sports Commission announced. Ali first visited China in 1979 when he met Deng Xiaoping, now the nation’s leader. But boxing was then banned in the world’s most populous country because it was considered dangerous. • NEW YORK (AP) Actress Leilani Jones, a star of the Broadway show “Grind,” was a shoo-in for a Tony award as best actress in a musical before an awards committee eliminated the prize in that category. The 20-member administrative committee voted Thur sday to drop the best actress category because only Miss Jones met the criterion that the nominee’s name be billed above the title of the show. “In order not to eliminate Miss Jones from consideration altogether, she was moved into the featured category,” said Harvey Sabinson, executive director of the League of American Theaters and Producers.
