Scarves can stretch clothes dollars, liven up wardrobe
Dear Heloise: I wrap cucumbers, green peppers, zucchini and green onions individually in paper toweling and then put them in plastic bags before storing them in the fridge They keep twice as long. I sometimes change the toweling if it is damp. This prolongs the freshness even longer. Edith Mellom EARRING TIP Dear Heloise: If you have ever forgotten to take off your earrings at home before you go to the pool, this hint is for you. Take the backs out of your earrings and stick the posts through your towel (or any cloth item). Voila! A better way than putting them in your purse and losing them. Your earrings should stay on the towel if the backs are put on right. But, just in case, remember to take them off and put them in your ear lobes before you start drying yourself off or run the towels through the washer. Morgan McAvene, Age 12 PLANT GREEN HOUSE Dear Heloise: Take a two-liter plastic pop bottle, clean it out and dry it. Cut the bottom off at the dark cup section and throw away the cap. Use the top section over your newly planted vegetable plants or flower plants . Mrs. Lorenna Bama * * * I know this would be great for tomato seedlings. Heloise CRUMB CATCHER Dear Heloise: When the children are home during the summer months, the kitchen table always seems to have crumbs and rings from glasses. I don’t want to wash place mats daily, since my children are still small and spill things quite often, so I use the comic section of the newspaper as place mats. I fold a sheet for each

child and it catches crumbs and drips. At the end of the day, I fold it and throw it away. One less item to scrub down during this busy time of the year. Mrs. N. R. Black * * * DEAR FRIENDS, This is the one of those neitherhere or neither-there times of year when going to the closet can be depressing. Chances are you’re sick of the season-spanning outfits you wear to get through spring. I’ve got news for you. You can make presto changes in those outfits with a little scarfery. What I do when my wardrobe has the blahs is perk it up by tying on a scarf. Tie two together and belt in a shift or pull together a blouse and skirt with a band of color at the waist. You can use little scarves too. They’re just the ticket to wear under the collar of a tailored blouse, then tie them in a sailor’s knot at front and center. I also like to tuck a small print scarf into the pocket of a black or navy suit jacket. A red and white scarf or a yellow and white one really brightens a dark outfit and makes it suit spring weather. Those long narrow scarves are great to wear knotted high, like a man’s tie, or knotted low, the way you used to wear them with a middy blouse and skirt. Sometimes when I feel an outfit needs a touch of color, I tie a bright print scarf to my handbag strap. Right now while you’re thinking about it, get out a few scarves. Tie one on and see how you can use it to perk up your wardrobe. Heloise
