Game exciting for Bucks, not Pacers

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Bucks clinched at least a tie of the Central Division title while clobbering the Indiana Pacers, but to coach Don Nelson, the game was just another step for his team this season. “It’s been exciting every day,” said Nelson after the Bucks’ 140-129 National Basketball Association victory Saturday night. “Clinching is just another exciting day in this exciting season.” If Milwaukee wins one more game or Detroit loses one, the Bucks win the championship.

Kentucky looks for best

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Kentucky’s basketball grapevine worked overtime as university president Otis Singletary kicked off the search for a successor to Joe B. Hall as head of one of America’s most storied college programs. As the news of Hall’s retirement sank in, members of the coaching fraternity started issuing the customary denials. But coaching at a school that already has a record 1,376 victories, five national cham pionships and 35 Southeastern Conference crowns has to be a tantalizing, though pressure-packed, possibility. How will the search be conducted? “We’ll need a large body of water to see if they can walk across it,” quipped Singletary, who in a meeting with the players in Denver Saturday promised “the best coach we can find, period. He said a search committee would be formed early this week from the board of directors of the Kentucky Athletics Association. The full board, chaired by Singeltary, will have to approve the final choice. “I don’t think we’ll have any trouble getting candidates. We have no friends tc reward, no enemies to punish,” Singletary said Sunday. He mentioned that he might want to put as many as three names on the list of candidates “if they aren’t there already” and said the qualifications certainly must in

Evansville right for Crews

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) Jim Crews, Bobby Knight’s top assistant at Indiana University, says he has turned down Several job opportunities in the past, but felt the head coaching position at the University of Evansville was right for him. “They’re concerned with academics and integrity, and I liked hearing that,” said Crews, after accepting the Evansville position. Crews, 31, was expected to sign a fouryear contract today, said Evansville sports information director Bob Boxell. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

elude “a thick, tough hide.” Hall, who forged a 297-100 record and won a national championship during 13 seasons, said he would have nothing to dc with the search. “My involvement will be absolutely none, and that’s on a volunteer basis,” said the man whose entire tenure was dogged by the ghost of Adolph Rupp. “I have tc have faith in the guy who hired me." Initial, speculative lists of possible candidates to take over the college game’s winningest program included Pat Riley of the Los Angeles Lakers, Purdue’s Gene Keady, Eddie Sutton of Arkansas, Georgia Tech’s Bobby Cremins, Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, South Florida’s Lee Rose, Dave Bliss of Southern Methodist, C.M. Newton of Vanderbilt, Hugh Durham of Georgia and Gene Bartow of AlabamaBirmingham. Other possibilities bandied about Lexington included Leonard Hamilton, Lake Kelly and Jim Hatfield, Hall’s three assistants; former Kentucky All-America Dan Issel, now finishing his last season with the Denver Nuggets, and former Hall assistant Dick Parsons. Singletary and Athletic Director Cliff Hagan said they hadn’t spoken to anyone yet. With 2,-000 basketball coaches coming to Lexington this week for the NCAA finals and the National Association of Basketball

Crews would replace Dick Walters, who was dismissed by the university March 15 after compiling a 114-87 record in seven seasons. Knight called the job an “outstanding opportunity” for his assistant. “He’s been a part of our program longer than anybody else but me four years as a player and these last eight as a coach.” “We’ve never sent anyone out better prepared to be a coach,” Knight said. A native of Normal, 111., Crews played at Indiana from 1973-76, and has been a member of the Hoosier coaching staff for eight years.

Coaches’ convention, they’ll have ample opportunity. Hagan said Kentucky won’t be rushed, even though the high school signing deadline is April 10. So the speculation continues. “It’s strictly speculation on the part of everybody involved on who is going to get one of the great jobs in the country,” said Riley, an All-America at Kentucky in the mid-19605. “I have a lot of personal friends back there. I haven’t been contacted by anybody. I think they all know I have a job. “I’m sure they’re going to do some heavy interviewing and heavy thinking and come up with somebody who is a jack of all trades.” The Lakers coach said he was happy in Los Angeles and “the timing would be bad for me now.” Sutton, who last week told the Arkansas Legislature he wants to finish his career with the Razorbacks, echoed that sentiment, adding that “rumors like this can hurt in recruiting and other ways.” Keady, spotted in the bleachers at the Indiana high school basketball finals in Indianapolis, said he was more interested in filling out the Boilermaker roster than succeeding Hall. “I’m more interested in finding us a center,” said Keady, who coached Western Kentucky two seasons.

Indiana rewards loyalty BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Smith fills the vacancy created by the departure of Jim Crews, who has agreed to become head coach at the University of Evansville.
