Boston lived by last-second shot and died by it
By The Associated Press The final play was set up for Michael Adams, who already had one buzzerbeater for Boston College in the NCAA Tournament. But it was Andre Turner who made the game-winning, 17-foot jumper for Memphis State—again. “I’m never happy to have to take that last shot,” Turner said Thursday night after his basket with one second remaining lifted No. 5 Memphis State over Boston College 59-57 in a Midwest Regional semifinal game. “I’d rather be up by 12 points.” The victory in Dallas put Memphis State into Saturday’s Midwest final against No. 4 Oklahoma, which downed No. 8 Louisiana Tech 86-84 in overtime when All-American Wayman Tisdale’s short jump shot bounced on the rim five times before falling through the basket with two seconds left. Also on Thursday night, top-ranked Georgetown continued its drive toward a second straight NCAA championship by beating No. 14 Loyola of Chicago 65-53 in an East semifinal in Providence, R.I. The Hoyas, who got a strong second half from All-American Patrick Ewing, on Saturday will face No. 6 Georgia Tech, which used a second-half burst to defeat No. 12 Illinois 61-53 in the other East semifinal. Tonight, Maryland faces Villanova and
UCLA going for second chance
By The Associated Press In his last visit to New York earlier this season, his UCLA Bruins were embarrassed by the St. John’s basketball team. Walt Hazzard wants a second chance in the Big Apple. “If we can get back to New York, it will make our year,” the UCLA coach said as he prepared his team for Saturday night’s National Invitation Tournament quarterfinal game with Fresno State. A victory would send the Bruins into the NIT semifinals next Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. It was at the Garden that they suffered a humiliating 88-69 loss to St. John’s last Dec. 22. “Trying to win a championship is always difficult,” Hazzard said. “You have moments when you’re tested, when you can go one way or another. I hope those
Greene to rebuild ISU basketball MURRAY, Ky. (AP) - Coach Ron Greene, who developed Murray State into an Ohio Valley Conference basketball power over seven years, says he’ll bring that building skill to his coaching at Indiana State University at Terre Haute. » Greene announced his resignation Thursday, saying he’s leaving his alma mater with “a great deal of emotion.” “I’ll always be a Racer fan, and I hope they can reach even greater heights,” Greene said in a statement released by both colleges. Greene, 46, a native of Terre Haute, replaces Dave Schellhase who resigned March 13 to assume other duties in the Sycamore athletic department. “He (Greene) has been very successful in every situation he has undertaken in 18 years as a head basketball coach. His record is tremendous and I think his local ties will add a lot to our program,” said Sycamore Athletic Director “Beanie” Cooper in announcing the selection. Greene said he will build the program at Indiana State “one brick at a time, with our main thrust being the establishment of a team that the students, the university and the community can point to with a great deal of pride.” Indiana State finished 14-15 overall this season, tying for sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores won their tournament opener before losing to eventual winner Wichita State. ISU will have a news conference Monday to formally present Greene as the new head coach. Indiana State assistant sports information director Tom James said that about 60 people applied for the coaching job, but only Greene and former UCLA coach Larry Farmer were interviewed.

moments are behind us ... but we’d better be tough.” In another quarterfinal game Saturday night, Virginia plays at Tennessee. On Sunday night, it’s Marquette at Indiana and Tennessee-Chattanooga at Louisville. With the reputation that Fresno State fans have for supporting their team on the road, Hazzard is hoping that more UCLA has more support at Pauley Pavilion than the visitors. “I want to see more (UCLA) blue in the stands than (Fresno) red,” Hazzard said. “Tell the (USC) Trojan fans to put some blue on and show up. Anybody who’s wearing red should have to wear a trenchcoat.” Fresno’s “Red Wave” is notorious for showing up, home or away, in large numbers and a lot of red clothing. About 5,000
Crews interviewed
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Indiana University assistant coach Jim Crews has met with University of Evansville officials to talk about becoming the Aces’ new head basketball coach. Crews was interviewed Thursday after having dinner Wednesday night with university President Wallace Graves and Vice President Thornton Patberg. “He’s a nice fellow, impressive, but we’re still going to bring in three or four more candidates for interviews,” Patberg said.

Birmingham in a second-round game, got his chance after Boston College squandered its final opportunity. When Memphis State’s William Bedford missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Eagles held the ball for two minutes before calling two timeouts with 14 seconds remaining to design the final play. “We wanted to get the ball to Michael to take the last shot, like he did against Texas Tech,” Boston College Coach Gary Williams said. In that first-round game against Texas Tech, Adams sank a 25-foot shot with five seconds left to win it. But Boston College’s play this time went askew when Roger McCready took a pass and dribbled the ball off his leg. The loose ball was recovered by Memphis State’s Vincent Askew, who fed Turner. “There wasn’t a lot of pressure, though,” Turner said. “I knew we would win or go into overtime.” Bedford finished with 23 points fo 1 Memphis State, 30-3, the champions of the Metro Conference. Stu Primus had 14 for Boston College, 20-11, of the Big East. Next in line for Memphis State will be Oklahoma and Tisdale, a three-time AllAmerican. Tisdale scored 23 points, eight of them in overtime, and hit the game-winning shot from just outside the lane. “It seemed like it took forever to go in,”
Fresno fans turned out for the Pacific Coast Athletic Association tournament in Los Angeles two weeks ago. Fresno coach Boyd Grant said he had “no idea” how many Bulldog supporters might make the return trip to Los Angeles. “It depends,” he said. “We’ll have to wait and see how many tickets they send up here and how fast they go. If they go quickly, maybe our people will buy up some of the ones they don’t use. I’d like to have five or six thousand down there, and we’re capable of that. I just don’t know what the fever is.” UCLA drew crowds of 4,280 and 7,228 to its first two NIT games, both in Pauley Pavilion. Fresno’s first- and second-round games, both at home, were sellouts in 10,132-seat Selland Arena.
He declined to identify the other prospects. Crews, 31, has been the most frequently mentioned candidate to replace Dick Walters, who was fired last week after seven seasons with the Aces. Crews has been Indiana head coach Bobby Knight’s top assistant for three years, and a Hoosier coach for eight years. Other prospects reportedly include Kansas State coach Jack Hartman and Pat Kennedy of lona College.
said Tisdale. “I had two men on me and tried to shoot it soft so I would get the bounce. I did, a bunch of them.” Louisiana Tech called a timeout after Tisdale’s shot, then threw a long inbounds pass into the frontcourt and called another timeout with one second left. But an attempted inbounds lob to Karl Malone hit the rim and bounced away as time ran out. Malone, the Bulldogs’ top player, scored 20 points and had 16 rebounds as Louisiana Tech, the Southland Conference champion, finished 29-3. Oklahoma, the Big Eight Confence winner, is 31-5. Georgetown won with the weapons it has used all season Ewing, the three-time All-American center, and a relentless defense. Ewing, who limped off the court with 1:25 left in the first half with an ankle injury, scored 14 of his 23 points against Loyola in the second half and was his usual dominating self, winding up with 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. Loyola entered the game with a 19-game winning streak, the longest in the nation, and had been counting on Aliredrick Hughes, a 6-foot-5 senior swingman who was second in the nation in scoring with nearly 27 points per game. But the Hoyas held Hughes, who had
