Snowmobile accident won't stop Dallenbach

BASALT, Colo. (AP) Race car driver Wally Dallenbach Jr. escaped injury on Monday when his snowmobile went off a road and plunged down a 100-foot embankment, but a companion was hospitalized, authorities reported. Dallenbach, 22, son of Indianapolis 500 driver Wally Dallenbach Sr., said he still planned to race in the 12-hour Sebring endurance race this weekend in Florida. Hospitalized at Aspen Valley Hospital was Brian Shanks, 50, of the Basalt area, with broken ribs and a kidney injury. He was listed in stable condition. Young Dallenbach said he has had some close calls in his six years as a race car driver, but they were nothing compared to his plunge down the steep embankment near the Ruedi Reservoir, about 10 miles north of Aspen in the central Colorado Rockies. “The takeoff was real good, but I’ve got to work on the landing,” Dallenbach joked

as he helped rescue workers winch his snowmobile back up the steep embankment. Dallenbach said he was leading two other snowmobiles, driven by his fiancee Robin McCall and Shanks, up a snowpacked road along the steep embankment’s edge, when he rounded a curve and hit dry pavement. He said he lost control of the machine, flew off the steep embankment and landed in snow clear of the snowmobile. Shanks hit the same dry patch and soared off the road, landing in the snow near Dallenbach. “I just remember when I hit the edge of the road, it kind of pitched me off,” Shanks said. “I thought I’d never quit rolling.” McCall, 21, of San Antonio, Texas, she said she rounded the curve and when she didn’t see the two men, looked down and saw them at the bottom of the steep embankment.

Sukova avoids upset, not Turnbull, Bassett

NEW YORK (AP) Czechoslovakia’s Helena Sukova called it luck that she escaped the upset bug that swept through the opening night of play in the $500,000 Virginia Slims Tennis Championships at Madison Square Garden. Seeded fifth in the season-ending tournament, Sukova edged her doubles teammate, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch 7-6, 7-6 to advance to the second round of this elite 16woman field where she will face Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden. “It was maybe more luck on my side,” Sukova said. “You miss a few shots and it’s over.” Lindqvist began the upset parade by knocking off fourth-seeded Wendy Turnbull of Australia 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Then Kathy Rinaldi advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 8 Carling Bassett of Canada. Tonight, Chris Evert Lloyd, the No. 2 seed, takes on Kathy Jordan and thirdseeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia plays Andrea Temesvari of Hungary. the women’s tour. The defending champion and top seed, Martina Navratilova, will see her firstround action on Wednesday when she faces Lisa Bonder. The first round will be completed that night as No. 6 Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria plays Pam Shriver and No. 7 Zina Garrison meets West Germany’s Sylvia Hanika. “It’s hard to play someone that’s a good friend of yours,” Sukova said after her hard-fought victory in the best match of the opening night. “We both know each others’ games. We play doubles together and we practice against each other. “It just bothers me that in the first round we have to play each other.” And play they did. Sukova, who upset Navratilova in the semifinals of the Australian Open last December, captured the first-set tiebreaker 8-6 when Kohde-Kilsch doublefaulted at match point, then had to fight her way through a second-set tiebreaker after she had jumped into what seemed to be a commanding 4-1 lead.
