Good new series spoil ABC image

c. 1985 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK—ABC may be in danger of ruining its reputation as the TV network that quality forgot. Three of the five spring replacement series scheduled for March are unusually well conceived and executed, and two more sound promising. First things first. Joining “Moonlighting,” Cybill Shepherd’s stylish comedy detective series that recently replaced “Call to Glory” on Tuesday nights, are two new Friday sitcoms: “Mr. Belvedere” and “Off the Rack.” Assuming that their premiere episodes are an accurate indication of things to come, they will easily become the two best comedies on the ABC schedule. And the best may be yet to come. Starting Thursday, March 21, The ABC “Movie of the Week” will be replaced by two hour-long dramas. “Wildside.” a Western starring Howard E. Rollins Jr., becomes the only Disney production on network television. “Eye to Eye,” which will follow “Wildside” Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST, gets more than a passing glance because its star is Charles Durning, a respected (two Oscar nominations) big screen actor. Stephanie Faracy co-stars as a detective’s daughter who helps Durning find her father’s killer before becoming his privateeye partner. In the meantime, “Mr. Belvedere” and “Off the Rack” deserve the spotlight. “Mr. Belvedere,” which will follow “Webster” at 8:30 p.m., is an especially pleasant surprise. The show is based directly on “Sitting Pretty,” the 1948 theatrical film that starred Clifton Webb as an arrogant genius who becomes the houseservant to a chaotic middle-class American family. The TV series’ hodgepodge cast consists of Christopher

Hewett, last seen in “Fantasy Island” but best-known as the director-in-drag in Mel Brooks’ “The Producers”; Bob Uecker, the former baseball player and Lite beer commercial star; and relative unknown Ilene Graff. Hewett has no problem changing gears from deadpan diplomatic to wise and fatherly, and his scenes with the three children all of whom, by the way, sound remarkably like real kids are laced with soft touches. “Off the Rack,” following “Benson” Fridays at 9:30 p.m., is a lot less subtle. Ed Asner and Eileen Brennan, as new partners in an old garment business, irub each other like exposed wVes and the sparks are non-stop. - Two new characters have been added since the pilot episode Pamela Brull as a smart and sexy blond secretary, and Sandy Simpson as the eager young fashion designer. Although both programs need to fine-tune some characters, with scripts like these sentimental and funny that should be only a matter of time. The question is: Will ABC give it to them? All of the network’s spring replacement series will require more time than usual to build an audience since the competition is so strong “Moonlighting” goes head-to-head with “Remington Steele,” “Off the Rack” faces the second half of “Dallas,” and “Wildside” and “Eye to Eye” oppose NBC’s blockbuster Thursday schedule, starting with “Cosby.” Good programs like “Mr. Belvedere” and “Off the Rack” are just the sort to improve ABC’s standing in the ratings and in the creative community, but only if the network can make like Paul Masson wine and cancel no series before its time.
