Dear Abby: Youngsters find writing advice column child's play
DEAR ABBY: I am doing my student teaching in a fifth grade advanced program at Eisenhower Elementary School in Louisville, Ky. All the students keep a journal of their creative writing to sharpen their creative writing skills. On Jan. 9, the class decided to celebrate the 29th anniversary of your first newspaper column, so each student made up a “Dear Abby” letter and answered it. The project turned out so well, we thought you might like to see their letters. Some were serious, but most were spoofs. MRS. SUSAN GRACE DEAR MRS. GRACE: Due to space limitations 1 am unable to publish all the letters, but the fifth-graders who wrote the following may qualify for the “Guinness Book of World Records” as the world’s youngest published authors: DEAR ABBY: I have a problem. My teacher gives me too much homework. What should I do? OVERWORKED DEAR OVERWORKED: Homework is just a part of school preparing you for the adult life ahead. Accept it as something you have to do and do it. DEAR ABBY: My brother was jumping up and down on his bed, and the bed broke down, and the floor fell through. Now every time I

W.W. DEAR W.W.: Tell him to study, be nicer and wear a ski mask. DEAR ABBY: My name is Calliope and I live in Las Vegas. My sister’s name is Henrietta, and she lives in Miami. Henrietta has a daughter named Charlie who has a dog named Fifi. I have a daughter named Georgette who has a dog named Chee Chee. My husband’s name is Barnabas and my brother-in-law’s name is Waldo. Fifi and Chee Chee fell in love and my daughter insisted that they get married. We hired a preacher, got a doggy license and they were married. Fifi just had a polka-dotted puppy and now my husband and brother-in-law are fighting over what to name it. One wants to name it Snoozer, and the other one likes Izzy. They are making my life miserable. What should I do? SCREWED UP HOUSEWIFE DEAR S.U.H.: You should change your name, get a divorce and name the dog Toby. DEAR ABBY: What’s green, has bad breath and stands 5 feet tall? ADAM R. DEAR ADAM: I hate riddles, but here’s one for you. What’s white, all crumpled up and is now in the bottom of my wastepaper basket? DEAR ABBY: The letter signed “Just Woke Up in California” moved me to tears. expensive gifts, vowed to give her a gift of himself—to spend more time with her and to tell her in so many words that he loved her while he still had time. My 90-year-old mother lived with me until she died a year ago. For 20 years I had been her shopper, chauffeur, confidant, mainstay, etc., and I’m sure she knew from my actions that I loved her very much, but only once since I was a grown man did I say, “I love you, Mother” —and that was on her deathbed. So, I also just woke up, and have promised myself that when I marry, I shall verbally convey such loving feelings to my wife—something I

There you could order elegant American food” in charming settings. The restaurants were founded and run by Patricia Murphy, an extraordinarily energetic and resourceful woman who as a young girl came to New York from Newfoundland. Although she began her restaurant

career in Depression days, she “slugged away” and won success on her own. In 1961 Patricia Murphy wrote a book called “Glow of Candlelight” (long out of print) telling the story of her life, her adventures in gardening and her food secrets. The food secrets consist of recipes and menus used in her restaurants and residences in New York and Florida. One of her recipes, Coffee Pearadise, is as appropriate now as it was when she served it years ago in her own home. It’s a delicate dessert whose ingredients are easy to have on hand and to put together. PATRICIA MURPHY’S COFFEE PEARADISE 1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin 2 tablespoons cold coffee 6 tablespoons sugar 1 cup hot strong coffee l 2 cup pear syrup 5 to 6 canned pear halves 1 cup heavy cream, whipped V-i teaspoon vanilla Soften gelatin in cold coffee; add sugar. Pour hot coffee over all and stir until dissolved. Add pear syrup. Arrange pear halves in bottom of 10-inch ring mold. Add part of gelatin mixture to depth of about x k inch; chill. Chill remaining gelatin mixture until slightly thickened. Whip cream and vanilla together; fold into remaining gelatin mixture. Spoon into ring mold; chill until firm. Unmold on serving platter. Serve with additional whipped cream if desired. Food Editor’s Note: When we tried this recipe we used a 5 1 2-cup ring mold and 6 pear halves from a 16-ounce can. We were, of course, careful to place the pears cavity side up in the ring mold. If you want to garnish the mold with extra pear halves, you’ll need to have another 16-ounce can on hand. This dessert makes enough for 6 servings.

TECHNICAL CHANGES MAY AFFECT TAXES CLEVELAND (AP) “Although there were no fundamental tax changes in 1984, there were many technical changes which will affect taxpayers in varying ways,” says John R. Cornell. Cornell, head of a tax planning group at Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue, a law firm here, says that now “a taxpayer who buys utility stocks could acquire more stock in the company by reinvesting some of the dividends free of tax. But this special tax break will expire at the end of this year, and as a result of this change, the market value of many utility stocks could be affected.” He also says that formerly a person who asked for an extension could extend the funding of an IRA beyond the normal April 15 filing date The new law says an IRA account must be funded by April 15.

“Our little one was running a fever all last night, so when Sally woke up this morning with a 105° temperature, I called the doctor right away. He said to bring her in to Hendricks County Hospital. It was the first time she had been that ill and I was very worried until we reached the hospital. After watching the nurses with Sally, I knew she was in good hands and I immediately felt better.
