products are advertised by breed name. While the emphasis is on livestock raising, the Hursts can also qualify as dirt farmers - in a small way. A small acreage is set aside for rotation crop farming with the end result being alfalfa for their stock. When the Ag Day Committee voted Billy and Helen Hurst as their unanimous choice for the Meritorious Farm Award in 1985, their many contributions to local agriculture were taken into consideration. BILLY HAS SERVED AS both vice president and president of the Putnam County Fair Association. He has also served as superintendent of the sheep barn and has given special recognition for excellence for young sheep showmen. . Neither Billy nor Helen were members of 4-H Clubs. Economic factors were against them when they were of club age. f ‘Our families just didn’t have the money then,” Helen said. - They have more than made up for this loss by becoming active boosters of young people who are now in 4-H. Their daughters, Beverly (Mrs. Reg Ross) and Carolyn (Mrs. Tom Newton) were active club members with show honors to their credit. IF THE HURSTS EVER decide to move, they may be looking for additional room to display their plaques and trophies. Among the most coveted is the Oren Wright Memorial Trophy. What can’t be on display in their rooms is packed away in shoe boxes or other containers. Those with farm backgrounds may be amazed at how many children have never been close enough to a farm animal to touch it. And some may have never seen a live one. The Hursts are among those who see that this lack no longer exists. Each spring a kindergarten class makes a pilgrimage to the Hurst Farm to see the baby lambs close up and also see other things of interest on the farm. For a number of years, an Ag Day project of the Hursts has been to take live animals to schools to give grade children something for show and tell and to acquaint them with an aspect of agriculture. WHILE BEING A FARM wife and mother is a full-time vocation in itself, Helen Hurst has given her skills as a registered nurse and for several years was school nurse at South Putnam. She also

THE HURSTS: Suffolk sheep are their pride and joy

For Billy and Helen, four important members of their family are their four grandchildren, three girls, Leah and Heidi Ross and Kimberly, and William Robert Newton. Will he carry on the family sheepraising tradition? Grandpa and grandma hope so.
