'Priestless Thursday' in Brooklyn NEW YORK (AP) A “priestless Thursday” was declared this week in the big Roman Catholic diocese of Brooklyn to underline the shrinking number of priests and to foster more enlistments in that vocation. All 615 priests in the diocese, after a concelebrated early morning Mass, were summoned by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero to an unprecedented, day-long convocation to “reflect and pray together to the Lord concerning vocations to the priesthood.” Regular parish activities were canceled for the day, with advance recommendations that funerals be scheduled the day before or after. To cover emergency functions for clusters of parishes and hospitals, a team of 30 priests from the neighboring Rockville Centre diocese was arranged. Noting that only four priests were ordained in Brooklyn last year, compared to 32 in 1960, Mugavero said “current figures indicate that by the year 2000, we will have 50 percent less priests.”

WILLIAM J. MURRAY At First Baptist

Murray will speak here on March 20 William J. Murray, former vice president of the American Athiests and son of athiest leader Madalyn Murray O’Hair, will speak Wednesday, March 20, at First Baptist Church in Greencastle. His 6:30 p.m. appearance is open to the public. In 1963 the United States Supreme Court banned organized prayer from public schools because of a lawsuit brought by Murray’s mother. But in 1979 Murray renounced his athiestic background and announced that he had become a Christian. The following year he wrote to a Baltimore newspaper, apologizing for his and his mother’s efforts to remove God from the schools of that city. Murray now serves as president of Murray Faith Ministries in Coppell, Tex., a suburb of Dallas. He also is the author of a book, “My Life Without God,” published in 1982. Additional information about Murray’s March 20 appearance is available by calling 653-3136. Lutherans give MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Members of the American Lutheran Church in 1984 gave $5.8 million to combat hunger in the world, almost twice as much as in any previous year, the denomination reports.

The Bible Reveals The Authority Of Jesus The New Testament Scriptures reveal to us all that we know about Jesus Christ. Those who will know anything at all about Jesus must learn about Him from the New Testament. Those who go through the New Testament, picking and choosing which portions of it they will accept and believe about Jesus, only succeed in creating a Jesus made in thier own image. They worship a mythological Jesus, not the historical Jesus. The Jesus of the New Testament plainly and boldly declared that God had given Him all authority. Matthew recorded Jesus to say, "All power hath been given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, 10, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world" (28:18-20). Jesus has all "power" or authority. That does not leave any authority for any man. No synod, council, or conclave of men has any authority to meet in annual conventions to legislate in matters pertaining to one's religion and relationship to God. Sometimes denominational groups meet to decide relevant issues, such as whether or not to ordain practicing homosexuals to the ministry. My friends, Jesus has already legislated that matter for us! He has all authority and no man or group of men has any right to try to reverse His legislation. He does not need the stamp of approval of any conclave of men on any matter concerning which He spoke. Jesus has "all power." The pope has none; the synods and councils have none,- pastors have no legislative authority. Jesus alone is the Lord over our lives (Jas. 4:12; Eph. 4:5). When we teach what Jesus taught, we teach what is binding upon men, regardless of what one's church discipline or creed book might teach contrary there to. If you respect and submit to the authority of Jesus and to Him alone, you will enjoy worshipping with us. We invite you to join us in our worship and study of the Bible. Church pantry helps feed farm families

VERDIGRE, Neb. (AP) Four days a week, farmers who can’t afford to feed their families pull up to St. Wenceslaus Roman Catholic Church in their pickup trucks and haul sacks of groceries out of a basement pantry. “We had people with empty cupboards, just absolutely empty cupboards,” said the Rev. Ronald Battiato, the St. Wenceslaus pastor who organized the pantry in mid-November. “They were eating over at grandma’s or down the road at Jim’s place because they had no funds to buy food.” The pantry, run by volunteers from St. Wenceslaus and four Protestant churches, serves as many as 30 families a day in this northeast Nebraska community of 600. The churches also have distributed clothing and medicine, handed out cash to Main Street businesses and given livestock feed to farmers who can’t pay for it. “The goal of the pantry is not just to keep the farmer fed, but it’s the survival of their way of life and the survival of Verdigre,” said Battiato. Verdigre called the “Kolach Capital of the World” after the pastry that the Czech settlers brought with them more than 100 years ago depends heavily on agriculture. Those who farm the sections of Knox County surrounding Verdigre face the

same problems other Midwestern farmers face plummeting land values, dropping crop prices and escalating expenses. But the problems here were compounded last September when the Bank of Verdigre & Trust Co. failed. State Banking Director Roger Beverage said the major causes were “absentee management” and the depressed farm economy. The bank reopened as a branch of another bank, which assumed some loans but turned 200 others over to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Although many of the borrowers refinanced, the FDIC wound up with 65 delinquent loans. The agency then ordered firms doing business with most of those farmers to make their checks out to both the farmer and the FDIC.

FDIC officials said the procedure was common collection policy, but the farmers grew angry. At a town meeting in December, many complained that the FDIC was, in effect, freezing their assets. The controversy swelled when someone set a fire at the FDIC office in Verdigre on Feb. 3. Battiato said the fire, which did no significant damage, may have been set by “people controlled by the FDIC or people employed by the FDIC to gain sympathy. ” Battiato’s statement drew a sharp denial from FDIC officials, including liquidation specialist Marcia Carrigan, who called the priest’s remarks “unfair” and “irresponsible.” The crime is unsolved; the FDIC eventually opened a new office. Some people aren’t coping with their

financial troubles as well as others, and a psychologist has been visiting the town regularly for those having difficulty, Battiato said. “The tension within families is very severe, and they make no bones about that,” he said. “We haven’t been able to document it, but I’m sure the alcohol problem has been aggravated.” “It’s horrible that FDIC has to create the crisis that it did, but in a sense it is a blessing in disguise for us because it has brought us so much closer together than we ever were,” Battiato said. “The pantry in a sense has become the center for this community. ' “The way the people talk about it, if it hadn’t been for the pantry, we wouldn’t be here. And I believe that. I know it’s a fact because they were penniless.” D'Arcy named WASHINGTON (AP) - Auxiliary Bishop John M. D’Arcy of Boston has been named to replace William E.
