Sharon Gless
—TV DIALOGUE—
IRONSIDE’S AIDE My husband and I have had a bet for more than a year about Sharon Gless. He says she was the cop/assistant on "Ironside.” I say she wasn’t. D.W., Bristol, Tenn. Hubby is probably thinking of Barbara Anderson, who played Eve Whitfield from 1967 to 1971. REMEMBER BANYON? I can’t find anyone who remembers a show called "Banyon.” It co-starred Joan Blondell. Can you tell me when it ran and who the star was? R.N., Augusta, Ga. I was just thinking about "Banyon’’ after watching its star, Robert Forster, on a recent “Magnum, P I.” twoparter. The 19305-era detective show only lasted half a season (1972-’73), but I still think it was one of the better efforts of its kind. DARREN VS. DARIN I say that James Darren of “T.J. Hooker” was a teen idol in the early 19605. My dad says I must be confusing him with Bobby Darin. We have a bet on this. Also, is Bobby Darin still alive and is he related to James Darren? J.M., Fresno, Calif. Bobby Darin, born Walden Robert Cassotto, died on Dec. 20, 1973, from chronic heart disease at the age of 38. Darin was not related to James Darren, born James Erocolani, but both were “teen idols” in the late ’sos and early ’6os. Darren beat Darin to the big screen, having made his first film, “Rumble on the Docks,” in 1956 to Bobby’s 1960 debut in “Come September.”

Susan Saint James
SAME SUSAN I say that Susan Saint James, Kate on "Kate & Allie,” played the wife on "McMillan and Wife,” but my family disagrees. A.L., Centre, Ala. Miss Saint James played Sally McMillan from 1971 until she quit the show in 1976. Her character was disposed of via a plane crash and Rock Hudson continued solo for a final season. PUTTING ON AYRES I was just watching “Holiday” with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn and was wondering if the character Ned, who was always drinking, was played by a young Lew Ayres. L.W., Prince George, 8.C., Canada. Ayres played Miss Hepburn’s reprobrate brother in that 1938 comedy, which was made shortly before his series of "Dr. Kildare" films. BEWITCHING COUPLE Recently, there was an interesting series about a husband and wife who were detectives. They had a beautiful cat who helped them. What was the name of the series? M.D., East Chicago, Ind. Sounds like “Tucker’s Witch,” starring Tim Matheson and Catherine Hicks. Viewers were less than bewitched and the series vanished after less than a year.
