Schedules getting jammed up

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Will we ever see green grass again? How about blacktop without snow or ice? Thanks heavens Lindenwood is still playing at DePauw University Friday night. The 7:30 p.m. game at the Lilly Physical Education and Recreation Center is the only game in Putnam County Friday night and will satisfy my basketball habit. A SPORTS WRITER IN February without a basketball game is almost unheard of in Indiana. How awful. It gives me the shakes and sends chills up my spine just to think about it. The closest high school basketball game appears to be Brownsburg at Cascade. That’s right, they’re still playing and Saturday night Tri-West is at Cascade in a West Central Conference game. Rosedale will be at Greencastle Tuesday night instead of Saturday. Fountain Central will be at North Putnam Tuesday instead of Friday and North Putnam goes to Danville Feb. 23. Cloverdale has postponed its Friday night home game with Shakamak but no date has been set and Saturday’s scheduled contest with Rockville is undecided upon. SOUTH PUTNAM AT Owen Valley Friday night remained uncertain at sports deadline time. Owen Valley has really got caught in a scheduling jam. While

Lewis leads Boilermakers past Badgers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Purdue scored a dozen points while holding Wisconsin to one and notched a 67-52 Big Ten basketball victory. “We thought we played the best defense of the year,” Coach Gene Keady said Thursday night. “The kids played hard, and I’m proud of that. We’ve got a lot of injuries. Now we’ve got to work on shooting a little more.” Purdue is 16-6 for the season and 7-5 in the Big Ten.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) Quarterback Sean Long of Missouri’s Grandview High School, a first team all-state selection who was honored as the Kansas City Metro player of the year in 1984, has signed a national let-ter-of-intent with Indiana State, the Sycamores announced Thursday. Long, a 5-foot-11, 180-pounder, passed for 1,770 yards and 10 touchdowns last season in leading Grand-

Dionne now No. 3

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) Marcel Dionne of the Los Angeles Kings moved into third place on the National Hockey League’s all-time scoring list Thursday night with a goal early in the second period in a game between the Kings and the Boston Bruins. The goal gave Dionne 1,468 career points and moved the 14-year veteran past- former Chicago Black Hawks star Stan Mikita. Only the legendary Gordie Howe and Phil Esposito have scored more lifetime points than Dionne. Howe totaled 1,850 in 26 seasons, while

Olajuwon takes control of boards to lead Houston by New York

By WILLIAM R-BARNARD AP Sports Writer While Moses Malone is still Chairman of the Boards in the National Basketball Association, it hasn’t taken long for rookie Akeem Olajuwon to become one of the highest officers in the rebounding business. The 7-foot center for the Houston Rockets established NBA season highs in rebounding and offensive rebounding with 25 and 15, respectively, to go with his game-high 30 points in a 113-105 victory over the New York Knicks Thursday night.

Troy Lewis scored 17 points to lead the Boilermakers. Purdue led 31-21 at the half. Lewis hit two free throws at 14:46 in the second half to put Purdue up 38-23. The score was 46-31 with 11 minutes left when Rick Olson sparked a Wisconsin spurt that ended at 6:18. Olson’s basket pulled the Badgers to within 10, 51-41. That’s when Purdue outscored the visitors 12-1 and led 63-42 with 3:12 left. Wisconsin Coach Steve Yoder said 20 turnovers and a pesky Purdue defense

view to the semifinals of the Missouri Class 5-A state championship. The Sycamores also announced the signing of three other high school seniors. The list included Darnell White, a 6-4, 225-pound tight end from Anderson High School; nose guard Mark Bertram, 6-3,220, from Eureka, Ill.; and defensive back Walter Crutchfield, 5-11,183, from Silver Springs, Md.

Esposito had 1,590 in 18 years. The goal was Dionne’s 617th of his career. Earlier this season, Dionne moved past Chicago star Bobby Hull into third place on the NHL’s career goal scoring list behind Howe and Esposito. The goal was an easy one as Dionne fired the puck into an open net from 15 feet out after taking a feed from teammate Dave Taylor, who had stolen the puck from Bruins goaltender Doug Keans behind the Boston net. The goal gave the Kings a 1-0 lead.

“I went for every rebound,” Olajuwon said. “If I go up for 10 rebounds, I’m going to get about six of them. It was certainly one of my best games. ” Rockets Coach Bill Fitch said Olajuwon has been so dominating that he should outpoll Chicago’s sensational Michael Jordan for NBA Rookie of the Year. “Let’s hold another draft in New York tomorrow and see who’s first,” Fitch said of Olajuwon’s performance. “I love Michael Jordan, but if I were his mother, the best I could do is split the ballot.” Olajuwon’s performance surpassed the

South Putnam has some dates open, like the next two Saturdays, Owen Valley is scheduled to play Eastern Greene this Saturday and Tri-West in a WCC makeup Feb. 23. South is booked to play at West Vigo Tuesday night. Whatever the case, because of the WCC race, which the 15th ranked Patriots lead with a 6-1 record, they must play South Putnam. It’s got to be played to decide the WCC. One idea here might be to wait and see how Sunday’s IHSAA state tournament draw goes because South and Owen Valley could draw one another in the Greencastle sectional when announced on Channel 4 (WTTV) at noon. There is some feeling though that wouldn’t stand up

Blab playing well, not Alford

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Holding Indiana’s Steve Alford, a member of the U.S. Olympic gold medal team, to seven points, Ohio State swept to a 72-63 Big Ten basketball victory over the Hoosiers. “It was by far our best defensive game of the year,” Ohio State Coach Eldon Miller said after Thursday night’s game. ‘We couldn’t be happier the way we played. We really had trouble with (Ewe) Blab. He’s really playing well, tough physically and mentally.” Senior guard Dave Jones contained Alford and scored 12 points for the Buckeyes. “I have to give Jones credit,” said Alford. “He’s an extremely hard worker, hard-nosed and aggressive.

Pacers find another way to lose basketball game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Rallying from four points behind with 14 seconds left, Milwaukee forced an overtime and in the extra period defeated Indiana 132-128 in a National Basketball Association game. “We invented a new way (of losing), that’s for sure,” Pacers guard Jerry Sichting said Thursday night. “It happened so fast, I don’t remember what happened.” The loss was Indiana’s fifth straight. Sichting gave the Pacers a 111-109 lead

previous NBA season high of 24 rebounds by Malone on Jan. 30 against Boston. The 7-foot rookie’s 15 offensive rebounds bettered his own NBA season high of 14 at Utah on Jan. 6. The victory gave the Rockets a 30-21 record, one more triumph than in all 82 games last season. The Knicks, 18-35, had their four-game home winning streak snapped. Elsewhere in the NBA, it was Milwaukee 132, Indiana 128 in overtime; Denver 138, Kansas City 123; San Antonio 131, Phoenix 102 and Boston 110, Seattle 94.

around the conference. Some birds of prey in second place would probably object. MONEY BECOMES ANOTHER consideration at this point, not to mention officials. In Cloverdale’s case we’re talking two home basketball games, revenue for both the athletic department and the Booster Club trying to pay for those great looking new scoreboards. Nobody is arguing the games needed to be postponed. It’s just too dangerous, but rescheduling is a nightmare and especially at this time of year. JERRY NEESE IS averaging 8.8 points per game for Vincennes University right now. The 1982 Cloverdale High School graduate who teamed up with Chad Tucker to lead the Clovers to the semistate, has scored 553 points in 66 games over the last season and threequarters for the Trailblazers and is averaging 8.4 points for his career. According to WAOV radio announcer Dave Hunter in Vincennes, voice of the Trailblazers, most of Neese’s shots come from downtown anywhere. South Putnam High School graduate Denise Weinhoeft is in her final year of eligibility as a runner at Indiana University. She’ll probably be running the 3,000 meters for coach Sam Bell this spring.

Michigan Big Ten leader, but is not champion yet

By The Associated Press The Michigan Wolverines defeated their only serious challengers for the Big Ten Conference basketball championship for the second time this season, but Coach Bill Frieder isn’t ready to lay claim to the title just yet. “You guys can make it out as a big game, but we have to play six more,” Frieder said after third-ranked Michigan downed No. 11 lowa 56-52 Thursday night. “I’m damn happy. I’m not going to downplay that, but there’s a long way to go and a lot of funny things can happen in this conference.” In other Big Ten action Thursday night, Ohio State defeated Indiana 72-63, Illinois drubbed Northwestern 64-42 and Purdue dropped Wisconsin 67-52 Roy Tarpley scored 21 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead Michigan, which overcame a five-point deficit in the final 44 minutes to win its 10th straight game and raise its record to 19-3 overall and 10-2 in the Big Ten. lowa fell to 19-5 and 8-3. lowa Coach George Raveling said a defensive lapse hurt his team down the stretch. In Bloomington, Ind., senior guard Dave Jones scored 12 points and smothered Indiana's Steve Alford as Ohio State chalked up their first win in 13 games at Assembly Hall. “It was by far our best defensive game of the year,” said Ohio. State Coach Eldon Miller. “I have to give Jones credit,” conceded Alford. “He’s an extremely hard worker,

“We didn't get off to the start we wanted to,” Alford added. “We wanted to apply defensive pressure and within two minutes they had 10 points. I don’t know what the problem is. We’re just going to have to pick it back up and prepare for Illinois. Hopefully we’ll get better. We’re not a very good ball club now.” Ohio State’s Ronnie Stokes hit a 15-fcOt jumper at 14:54 in the first half, breaking a 13-13 tie, and the Buckeyes led the rest of the way. “Dave Jones played a fine defensive game on Alford tonight,” Miller said, Indiana was led by Blab with 28 points and Stu Robinson with 18, as the Hoosiers dropped to 6-6 in the conference and 14-8 for the season.

Wrestling now Feb. 23; Swimming sectional Saturday

The Indiana High School Athletic Association wrestling state championship meet has been postponed a week and moved to a new site and the Bloomington South boys swimming sectional has been turned into a oneday meet Saturday due to statewide school closings. The annual IHSAA wrestling state finals has been rescheduled for Feb. 23 at 9,325-seat Chrysler Fieldhouse in New Castle instead of being held at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. “OUR SCHOOLS HAVE been down almost all week, wrestlers haven’t been able to practice and we didn’t want to wait until the last minute to notify member schools,” IHSAA Commissioner Gene Cato told Associated Press. A number of alternate sites for the 47th annual state wrestling meet had to be considered because Feb. 23 is

Indiana was led by Uwe Blab with 28 points, as the Hoosiers dropped to 6-6 in the conference and 14-8 for the season. In West Lafayette, Ind., Wisconsin Ccoach Steve Yoder said the Badgers’ 20 turnovers and a pesky Purdue defense made the difference in the Boilermakers’ win. “We have a tough time when people get after us on defense,” Yoder said. The Badgers evened their record to 11-11 overall and 2-10 in the conference. Stipanovich had a last shot, but it hit the left side of the rim and bounced off. “The way they tied the bailgame, we had to have doubts after that,” said Sichting. GREENCASTLE AND SOUTH Putnam will be participating in an all-day swimming sectional meet at Bloomington now. The sectional was postpone! Thursday afternoon. The preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m., with the diving competition to follow and then the swimming finals. Greencastle was able to practice Wednesday and Thursday, but very few of the South Putnam swimmers could get to the school for practice.

Rich Falk figures if you’re going to beat powerhouse Illinois in their own backyard you can’t afford many mistakes. But Falk’s Wildcats made plenty in the form of 22 turnovers as they fell to the 17thranked Illini. “We did all right at the start of the second half, but once they got out on us we were in deep trouble,' said Falk “We had a total breakdown in passing and scoring opportunities.” Illinois junior guard Bruce Douglas said the victory will help set up the Illini for the stretch drive in the conference. “Tonight was a great victory for us. It really helped us find ourselves,” Douglas said. The win snapped a three-game conference losing streak for Illinois, and gave them 20 consecutive wins in Assembly Hall. The loss was the fifth in a row for Northwestern, now 1-11 in the league and 5-17 overall, all alone at the bottom of the standings.
