Passes get Pistons win, Thomas record

By The Associated Press Isiah Thomas’ thigh was still hurting, but there was nothing wrong with his helping hands. The All-Star guard scored 23 points and tied a club record by dishing out 25 assists as the Detroit Pistons defeated the Dallas Mavericks 124-119 Wednesday night. “I think I was able to push the ball up the court better than last night (a 139-126 overtime loss to Chicago),” said Thomas, who leads the National Basketball Association in assists with a 13.2 average. He suffered a bruised thigh in Sunday’s All-Star Game. “My leg was loosened up. My thigh is just sore not as tight as it’s been the past couple of days —just sore.” In other NBA games, Philadelphia edged New York 131-129, New Jersey turned back Cleveland 112-105, Atlanta downed Utah 94-88 and the Los Angeles Clippers shaded Golden State 108-105. While the Pistons got plenty of assists from Thomas, the backcourt wizard had plenty of help from Terry Tyler, who led Detroit with 25 points. Dallas' Mark Aguirre led all scorers with 40 points. 76ers 131, Knicks 129 Rookie Charles Barkley scored five straight points in the final 41 seconds to seal Philadelphia’s victory and enable the 76ers to tie Boston for first place in the Atlantic Division. Moses Malone scored 37

Countries are same, players different

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) When the inaugural $lB million Lipton International Players Championships tennis tournament began its two-week run, the top-seeded player came from Czechoslovakia and No. 2 from Sweden Now, with the field of 128 pared to four, a * Czech and a Swede remain along with two Americans But it’s neither Ivan Lendl nor Mats Wilander. Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia and Sweden’s Jan Gunnarson are joined bv Americans Tim Mayotte and Scott Davis in Friday’s semifinals. The final four in the women’s singles field take to the court today at Laver’s International Tennis Resort, with top-seeded Martina Navratilova facing Canada’s Carling Bassett, the No. 10 seed, and No. 2 Chris Evert Lloyd playing West Germany’s Steffi Graf. The women’s final on Saturday and the men’s championship match Sunday will be televised nationally by ABC. Both winners will pocket $112,500. The men’s semifinals were set Wednesday w-hen Smid upset ninth-seeded Yannick Noah of France 6-3,6-3,7-5; Davis eliminated No. 13 Stefan Edberg of Sweden 6-1, 6-4, 7-5; Mayotte crushed Mike Leach 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, and Gunnarsson shocked No. 12 Vitas Gerulaitis 2-6,6-3,6-4,6-2. points, Andrew Toney added 23 and Barkley 20 for Philadelphia, which won its fourth straight game. Barkley’s late surge offset a 46-point performance by New York’s Bernard King. Nets 112, Cavaliers 105 Otis Birdsong scored 10 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter and Mike Gminski hit five free throws in the closing minutes. Cleveland’s World B. Free led all scorers with 34 points. Hawks 94, Jazz 88 Kevin Willis scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to rally Atlanta, which trailed for most of the game. Utah turned cold in the fourth quarter and the entire team only managed to match Willis’ 11 points in the period. Dominique Wilkins led the Hawks with 26. Clippers 108, Warriors 105 Norm Nixon scored half of his gamehigh 32 points in the fourth quarter and the Clippers survived a late scare. The lead changed hands eight times in the final period before the Clippers took the lead for good 97-94 on a three-point play by James Donaldson with 4:18 to go. Purvis Short led the Warriors with 28 points. Center Bill Walton, who missed the Clippers’ last five games, played six minutes in the first half and scored four points but had to leave the game after his troublesome right ankle became sore.

Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia 7-5, 6-2 Wednesday Smid began the long day’s program with only the latest in a string of upset that has seen 15 of the 16 seeded players fall by the wayside The Czech quickly jumped out to a two-set lead in the best-of-five-sets quarterfinal battle before Noah found the range. Noah played his first three matches at night and his fourth-round match in the late afternoon Against Smid, he took the court at 10 a m EST, a time he joked may have helped Smid win. “I’m not a morning player,” said Noah, who won the French Open in 1983. “It was different. I got up at 7 o’clock I usually get upabout 12.” Then, with a smile on his face, he added: “As a matter of fact, I didn’t wake up until 12 today.” That was about the time the third set began “I just played my game,” Smid said. “I came to the net to his backhand and played good volleys at the net. He couldn’t pass me. He made a couple easy mistakes and that was it.” Gerulaitis jumped on top, taking the first set against Gunnarsson, the silent Swede the one that lasted after Wilander. Edberg. No. 3 Henrik Sundstrom. No 4 Anders Jarryd and No. 8 Joakim Nystrom had fallen by the wayside.

Worry Clinic

By George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D,

CASE H-943: Marcella D., age 38, is 25 lbs., too plump. ‘‘Dr. Crane,” she moaned, “I weighed 120 when we first married. “But now I am 145, even in the morning, when you say we are almost 2 lbs., lighter than at night. “And Easter is only 4 weeks away, so how can I safely take off about 15 lbs., before Easter Sunday morning, for I’d like to blossom out in some new clothes? “And also perk up my husband’s waning interest in my bourdoir cheesecake! ” SAFE DIETING PLAN Dozens of highly advertised dieting plans are on the market, some of which involve exercising daily at expensive “Salons”. Others depend on drugs that race your heart and thus melt away your body’s stored calories faster. But these methods penalize your heart, yet it is your stomach that needs to be taught a new habit. Since it is still cool weather, try my simple dehydration plan that teaches our stomach to register “Full” on about 30% of your previous food intake. Here’s how: (1) Limit your total liquid intake the first day to just one glass (8 oz.), which includes milk, water, coffee etc. This dehydration will pull water out of your tissues and also teach your stomach to shrink, as you women ingest 800 calories of food daily, while fat husbands can reduce their intake to 1,200.

The Banner-Graphic classifieds get results! Call 653-5151 to place your classified

(2) On the 2nd day, move up to 2 glasses of total fluids, with 3 glasses the 3rd day on through the 10th. You will reduce an average of 10 lbs., in 10 days, so Marcella would be down from 145 to 135, and still have 18 more days to shed her extra 5 lbs. Don’t worry about your lack of fluids, for every pound of fat that you lop off, will produce 2 glasses of water internally, which is why camels manufacture 12 to 14 gallons of water as they dissolve their fatty hump onlong desert trips. (3) The first day your attention will shift from food to a desire for water, and many women then pour that one glass of water into an ice tray and suck on a thin wafer of ice when too thirsty. Obviously, part of that ll>lb., quick loss is due to drying out (dehydration) but this simple dieting plan bolsters your morale! So send for my dieting booklet, “How to Lose 10 lbs, in 10 Days”, enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus2s(.
