People in the news 'Cheers'won't replace 'Coach' LOS ANGELES (AP) - The character of “Coach,” p ayed by actor Nick Colasanto on the NBC television senes Cheers, will not be continued, according to a producer of the show. Colasanto, 61, died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack -at his Hollywood home. The one thing we know for sure is we won’t try to have another ‘Coach’ or anything like that character. He’s irreplaceable,” co-producer Les Charles said Wednesday. No immediate decision was made on how to handle the death in the show, which has two episodes left to film for the current season. Colasanto had missed the last five episodes filmed, and his absence was explained in the show as a vacation. Colasanto’s body will be flown to his native Rhode Island, where a funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. • NEW YORK (AP) Movie legend Bette Davis, who has just completed a film in England, says her “greatest, greatest fear” while recovering from a mastectomy, a stroke and other ailments was that she would never work again. Nine days after her mastectomy, the 76-year-old actress suffered a stroke. Only days after getting out of the hospital, she broke her hip. “I really thought many times I never would be acting again and that was my terror in the hospital, night after night sleepless,” she said in an interview taped Wednesday for ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America.” The star of such films as “All About Eve” and “Jezebel” called her recovery “a great victory” because “many of the doctors said I would never work again, in fact they didn’t think I would live for many a day.” But, she said, “I’m back into the whole career thing with confidence.” She said she may do another film in Italy. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Production on the movie “Peggy Sue Gets Married” with director Francis Ford Coppola is in limbo because its star, Debra Winger, has injured her back and could take up to six months to recover. The 28-year-old actress was to begin work next month on the movie but she hurt her back about a month ago during 3 mountain hike in New Mexico and is now in traction in ier Los Angeles home, publicist Pat Kingsley said Wednesday. The injury was diagnosed as a herniated disk. • DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) Tennis players Vitas Gerulaitis and Bobby Riggs say they want to give a big box of Valentine’s Day candy to Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver, the top women’s doubles team in the world. Then they want to beat them in a battle-of-the-sexes tennis match. “We are issuing a challenge to Martina and Pam,” Gerulaitis said Wednesday, flanked by Riggs and a huge, heart-shaped box of candy with the inscription “To Martina From Vitas and Bobby.” In a similar match in 1973, Riggs, now 66, lost to Billie Jean King in Houston.

BARBARA MANDRELL Expecting third child

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Country music entertainer Barbara Mandrell, seriously hurt in a traffic accident last fall, is expecting her third child in early October. “We are shocked, surprised and thrilled to death,” the 36-year-old singer, musician and actress said Wednesday. “We’ve been through such serious, hard times that it’s nice to have some good news. We’re overjoyed.” Miss Mandrell and her husband, Ken Dudney, have a 14-year-old boy, Matthew, and an 8-year-old daughter, Jaime. She said her pregnancy would delay plans to do a television special and make a made-for-TV movie. • LOS ANGELES (AP) A music video narrated by actor David Soul and a television movie guide distributed free in supermarkets are the latest tools in the effort to find missing children. A public service video featuring pictures of nine missing children and the telephone number of New York-based Child Find was released to 650 television stations on Wednesday. The message includes a short version of rock musician Devin Payne’s video “Foolin’ Around.” At the same time, TV Fanfare Publications in Los Angeles, also working with Child Find, said their nationally distributed TV Movie News will carry photographs and information about two missing children each month. • LOS ANGELES (AP)-The U.S.S. Enterprise will fly again with longtime trekkies William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy aboard in “Star Trek IV," to be directed by Nimoy and produced by Paramount Pictures Corp. The leading duo, playing Adm. James T Kirk and Mr. Spook, will be joined by other veteran “Star Trek” colleagues in the fourth motion picture adventure on the space voyager. Co-starring in the film, scheduled to begin photography this fall, are DeForest Kelley as Dr. Leonard “Bones" McCoy, James Doohan as Chief Engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, Walter Koenig as Commander Pavel Chekov, George Takei as Commander Sulu and Michelle Nichols as Communications Officer Uhura. The first three “Star Trek" films, all produced by Paramount, have earned more than $250 million in domestic box office receipts.
