Reds could have rookie as catcher CINCINNATI (AP) Alan Knicely, the 1984 Minor League Player of the Year, thinks he has a chance to be the Cincinnati Reds’ starting catcher now that Pete Rose is the manager. “With Pete, bull is not going to get it done. You are either going to have to produce or you’re going to be out in the cold,” Knicely said. “That’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. He is not going to be one of these managers who says, ‘This is what (Reds’ president) Mr. (Bob) Howsamwantstodo, so this is what we’ll d 0... Pete wants to win and he’ll go with the people who can help him doit. “If I get my chance, I think I can be the starting catcher,” Knicely said. “I don’t seeDann (Bilardello) throwing everybody out and I don’t think Brad (Gulden) is everything they want back there either.” Knicely agreed when the Reds asked him to play for Araceibo in the Puerto Rican Winter League as a catcher. He had played first base most of last season. “They told me not to worry about the hitting,” said Knicely. “I hit .235, but I caught pretty well ... I didn’t have any trouble receiving or calling the game. Throwing was my problem. I had some trouble with my footwork and my timing. Toward the end, I felt a little better catching.” “If I don’t make the club, they’ll release me this year,” said Knicely. Rose noted Knicely’s statistics at Wichita, where he hit 33 home runs, batted .333 and drove in 126 runs. “I don’t see anybody else in the organization coming up with those kind of numbers,” Rose said. But Knicely isn’t counting heavily on his Triple-A numbers. “As far as I’m concerned, those numbers don’t mean anything and I think the Reds feel the same way,” he said. “It’s all going to come down to what I do in spring training.” Power signs new contract CINCINNATI (AP)—Cincinnati Reds have signed pitcher Ted Power to a oneyear contract. Terms weren t disclosed. The right-handed reliever led the National League with 78 appearances last season, when he compiled a 9-7 record with 11 saves and a 2.82 earned run average. Power reportedly made $74,-000 last year, and he filed for salary arbitration when he reportedly asked for $270,000 while the Reds offered $200,000. Power’s signing leaves three Reds players still set for salary arbitration: outfielders Gary Redus and Eddie Milner and infielder Tom Foley.

Sharks have 12-2 record
It’s safe to say the Greencastle High School swimming team is ready for the Bloomington sectional Feb. 14, or at least Tri-West might think so. Greencastle ran its record to 12-2 and Pat Condon and Roman Huber set school and McAnally Pool records Tuesday night in a 105-66 victory over Tri-West. The Tiger Sharks earlier defeated Avon in one of the closest meets of the year, 96-76. “I WAS PROUD of the team. We had some really strong times and the team worked together well,” coach Brad Hayes said. “Everyone seems to be psyched for the sectionals and that’s a bonus in a meet like this.” Condon broke two school and McAnally Pool records, one of which he already held. The sophomore turned in a 2:08.22 first place time in the 200-yard individual medley (1M), breaking the 2:08.737 record set by teammate Bob Nealon against Terre Haute North. Condon broke his own record in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking a 5:03.00 time to surpass the mark of 5:04.76 he set against Danville.

Huber turned in a 57.72 first place for a 100-yard backstroke record, breaking the former record of 58.71 seconds he set just last week against Crawfordsville. Huber also won the 50-yard freestyle for Greencastle. CHRIS HAYMAKER WAS the only other double-event winner for Greencastle, taking firsts in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle. Greencastle dominated Tri-West in all but one event, the Bruins winning the diving competition. Despite the 20-point final margin at Avon, it was the closest victory Greencastle has had this year. The 200-yard medley relay team of Quentin Oliver, Mike Opdahl, Condon and Aaron Steiner put Greencastle ahead in the meet for good, leading a first and third finish for a 10-4 score after the opening event. THE TIGER SHARKS won 7 of the 11 events. Condon was the only double event winner, taking the 200-IM in 2:21.79 to lead a one-two-three Greencastle finish and turning in a 4:26.19 time to win the 400-meter
